Happy birthday to cortex
Let's all wish a very happy and hopefully stress-free b-day to outgoing veteran mod, inveterate punster, and all-around mensch, MeFi's own cortex "Josh" Millard. [more inside]
The Fundraising Month Finale
You’ve donated for it. You’ve waited for it. You’ve (hopefully not, really) dreamed about it. Now you can do it. You can… [more inside]
Help cortex cut his hair, fundraising edition.
My hair is too long! Something's gotta be done! So, here's the deal: for every new $50 in monthly recurring contributions to MetaFilter we see in September, I'll cut an inch off. I've got about 14 inches of hair right now, so we've got a lot of ground to cover. Come inside to track my progress with the patent-pending MetaFilter Hair-O-Meter. [more inside]
Happy birthday, cortex!
Happy birthday to the guy who probably worries more than most about keeping the lights on in this sometimes only bright corner of the internets!
Happy birthday, cortex!
Not only is he the chief cook and bottle washer around here, he’s also a: Taurus, musician and amazing stained glass artisan, as well as possessing other artistic talents! Happy natal return day to our own Renaissance man, cortex!

cortex + donuts = 🌈
At the end of October our fearless and inimitable leader gave a talk called Keeping Web Communities Healthy in a Dark Timeline at a Donut.js meetup. It included copious amounts of swearing and the observation that "the web can be not shitty." I highly recommend that you take 17 minutes out of your week and watch. Warm fuzzies likely but not guaranteed.
The Election Year That Never Ended
Where Cortex is interviewed by Patrick O'Keefe of Community Signal. Issues include the (ongoing) impact of the 2016 election on MetaFilter, member deaths, the recent transfer of ownership and how MetaFilter has addressed casual sexism, racism and transphobia. Recent interviewees include Jessamyn and Matt. Contains profanity.
mathowie transfers ownership of MetaFilter to cortex
Big news: a few days ago Matt Haughey and I signed paperwork to transfer ownership of MetaFilter from him to me. This is sorta huge and sorta not a big deal at the same time: things are fine and basically nothing is changing on the site as a result, we’re just keeping on as before. I’ll talk about the whole thing below the fold. [more inside]
This needs to be a ten hour YouTube video loop
In which a community website moderator and artist of some repute cleans up a stencil -based work and OH GOD THIS IS SO SATISFYING. Recent works by the same artist include fractal images, cubes, and more peeling.
MetaFeatured Snippets
A little while ago Google introduced “featured snippets” that get listed at the top of a list of search results. (Their perils have already been discussed on the front page.)
Surprisingly, if you search for “cheevos” you’ll get a featured snippet clipped from a blog post by one of mefi’s own. I’m curious if anyone has seen other MetaFilter, AskMe or MetaFilter-adjacent content show up in a featured snippet.

Moderator in the news?
Hey, Cortex! (read to the end)
Cortex on The Setup
Josh talks about the stuff he uses to get things done.
Happy birthday, Cortex!
I hope you got the weekend off to play.
We know the queue is there for just that reason.
To let the mods have downtime, just like folks.
And let us all cool off despite the season.
Your first birthday as our dear leader.
Hope this has made your life sweeter.
We'll also see you on the "Tweeter."
Dear Cortex, nothing could be neater!
Happy birthday, dude!
Sixteen Years
After 16 years of doing a bit of everything under the sun here, I’m stepping away from the day to day of running MetaFilter and moving into the background. Never fear, I’m leaving it in the best of hands and things are looking good for the future. [more inside]
Happy birthday Cortex!
I can't believe no one has said anything to our "datawranglin' mod" until now, but many happy returns!
Happy birthday, Cortex!
"Moderator, chief datawrangler at Metafilter", "cortex is a 32-year-old musician, computer geek, and generally reckless creative-type person in Portland, OR. His username on mefi is “cortex”, for reasons that aren’t particularly interesting."
Happy Birthday Mr Cortex

Unfortunately, "ransom" was not on the list.

Can we favorite a deletion reason?
Happy Moderator's Day!
Happy birthday, Cortex!
Coooooooooooooortex! Happy birthday, dude! I think dude deserves a shoutout for his mod duties, for MeFi music, for all the data crunching, for the fascinating subsites and just for being an all-around outstanding contributor to the site. So, thanks man and again, happy natal anniversary!
Mapstalgia going viral..
It is done.
In case you missed it, metafilter was down for maintainance for a bit last night.
Cortex, your staff is broken.

cortex, easy on the deletions!
This was not a good deletion. I think cortex pulls the trigger too quickly sometimes on the deletion of Ask Me posts and more restraint would be appreciated. [more inside]
I mean I'm just curious.
Ouroboros is a cat.
Lute Cat (not to be confused with Zither Cat) began life as a deletion reason on the blue, was briefly batted about on the grey, was then auctioned off for charity, and is now residing in Projects, ready to be purchased and taken home. Oh won't you love him, Mefi.
Minecraft FTW?
I respectfully disagree.
cortex made a meme
Folk music, viral weirdness, and the Ballad of Steven Slater. Josh Millard, known to all and sundry here as cortex, analyses how The Ballad of Steven Slater written by Max Sparber, a.k.a. Astro Zombie, which cortex set to music and performed, went viral. How viral? Wolf Blitzer viral.
Can cortex's deletion reasons be collected?
Pony request for my birthday: Can cortex's deletion reasons be collected? Stuff like this is one of my favorite features of the site.

"One of you will betray me with a self link before the cock crows thrice"
Some time ago, I did a post about parodies of "The Last Supper". Little did I know at the time that the Greatest Spoof Ever would feature MetaFilter's Own Jesus H. Shatner (although in retrospect, it seems obvious). Ladies and Gentlemen, a masterpiece by leonardo pjern, "The Last Round" [more inside]
