Meetup in Santa Barbara or Goleta January 12, 2010 5:29 PM   Subscribe

Any interest in a Santa Barbara or Goleta meetup?

It's been a while, and we might have some new faces around. It'd be nice to meet up!

Maybe a board game night followed by hanging out at the Merc. Downtown works too, depending on where people are.

I'm up for it! Saturdays are best for me, but a later Friday or earlier Sunday.

Daytime is better for me due to childcare and exhaustion.

I miss the Merc so much.

I'm in, and I have a very flexible schedule. Goleta is closer to me, but downtown works as well, so long as there is OK parking.

Sweet!

k8t -- what's too late for you? like, 4pm ish? I think T wants to come to meetup for sure, by the way. We'll feed him his veggies.

Now I know of at least 3 more Mefites in the area... they should be responding shortly...

I'm now in LA most of the time, but I'm always happy to find excuses to hang out in SB for a few days! Douglaswth and I have pretty flexible schedules.

Yes! Ambrosia Voyeur is in class Tuesdays and Wednesdays and we're busy this weekend, but I think we'd be able to make it any other day.

W would prly like me home for bedtime - 7ish. T is no fun in public right now. He runs and runs.

How about one week from this Saturday -- February 23rd? At 3pm? That way everyone can make it, I hope.
posted by spiderskull at 6:17 PM on January 14, 2010

Oh, and if people need rides, I can offer some of the otherwise empty seats in my car. I'm driving from Ellwood.
posted by spiderskull at 6:18 PM on January 14, 2010

Hmm, do you mean January 23rd? That should be fine for us! Where's the first location?
posted by dreamyshade at 10:22 PM on January 14, 2010

Whoops, yeah, January 23rd. Location depends on who's coming. Maybe somewhere downtown as a good middle-point, what with folks potentially driving up from Ventura and down from SLO.

I'll poke around the intertubes to find a good spot for us to play board games.

post to sidebar pls!
posted by k8t at 8:07 PM on January 15, 2010

okay, I was waiting to make sure this date works for people first... but it seems like it might, so I'll post it now
posted by spiderskull at 11:34 PM on January 15, 2010

I'm in (plus one)! 3pm is great, because we can drive down at a leisurely pace, and still get back to SLO that night.

So I'm thinking we should meet at Muddy Waters cafe (gmaps)... it's close to downtown and relatively easy to get to.

Any objections or alternative suggestions? I'll sidebar this tomorrow if everyone's cool with Muddy's
posted by spiderskull at 3:34 PM on January 17, 2010

Okay, so Muddy Waters Cafe it is. Let's meet there at 3pm. I will bring the following board games, in case anyone's interested in playing: Dominion, Settlers of Catan, Bang!, Wise and Otherwise, Pandemic. Feel free to bring more if you're so inclined -- again, we can just hang out and drink coffee and/or beer and wine if that's what people want to do.

WHO
YOU. I'll try to get some "Friends of Matt Haughey" signs up, or you can just ask any of the guys working there. They're friendly.

WHAT
ROFLing, mostly.

WHERE
Muddy Waters Cafe
508 East Haley Street
Santa Barbara, CA‎
(805) 966-9328‎

WHEN
Saturday, January 23rd at 3PM

WHY
Because in person, we're all so much more awesome and awkward at the same time.

Muddy Waters is a couple blocks from my office. I've stopped in many times for a quick coffee to go and always want to stay and hang out a little longer, it seems like a really warm and friendly place. We'll be there.
posted by contraption at 2:33 PM on January 18, 2010

Great! Will be there!

Should I wear my MetaFilter shirt or would that be like wearing a band's t-shirt to its own concert?
posted by k8t at 4:09 PM on January 18, 2010

contraption -- I had no idea you were still commuting here!

k8t -- Haha, I think it's a good idea -- it'll help people find us.
posted by spiderskull at 4:50 PM on January 18, 2010

And it looks like we'll have some nice weather, if projections hold true. I'll be there with Mrs. filthy light thief, and we can bring Carcassonne, amongst other things.

I'm down for this. I love boardgames!

SpiderSkull - are you going to go early and try to get a pack of seats?
posted by k8t at 1:35 PM on January 23, 2010

I'm leaving right now....

We're running pretty late (haven't left Ventura yet) but are still planning to stop by. Could somebody post here or text/call 805 451 7494 if there's a migration?

Yes, we enjoyed the many venues of Metafilter Central Coast! Things I wrote down to link:

Spoonflower: Print custom fabric on-demand, $18-$32 per yard.
African textile design from the 1980s: planes, money, electric fans, cars.
Neutraface: An Ode On A Typeface, a very excellent parody of Lady Gaga's Pokerface.
Isla Vista's Geodesic Dome House (self-link), at Camino Lindo and Sabado Tarde.

Pictures to come later, if any of them manage to be not-blurry.

Mr. + Mrs. filthy light thief arrived home safely, and now I'm off to my radio show (live streaming in RM and QT on KCPR.org, a website that is mostly out of date, except for the schedule.)
posted by filthy light thief at 8:19 AM on January 24, 2010

Oh yeah, we had a blast, must do it again soon, and I'll post pics after my radio show (and after I get caffeine + food).
posted by filthy light thief at 8:19 AM on January 24, 2010

Nice show, filthy light thief! That website is seriously out of date.
posted by Korou at 1:03 PM on January 24, 2010

Korou, it is sad. There's been a gradual decline in the website upkeep.

My estimated posting time on the photos is now pushed back to this evening/night, maybe tomorrow morning. More info from conversations last night:

- Ninja Tune on Discogs and Djouls (archive only now, with all new material on Paris DJs).
- Mr. Scruff on AllMusic, who cite a lot of weird folks as similar, though I think Wagon Christ is the only one on the list who might match the quirky style. Amon Tobin is listed as a similar artist, too, but his style is definitely darker. His list of similar artists is probably a better match, though I don't know if (m)any match his Brazilian influenced sound. More fun: Mr. Scruff on Soundcloud, including some recent 4-6 hour sets, and a mix from 1994!

I thought there was more, but I forget.

Oh yes, Wise and Otherwise - "Aptly described as Confucius plays Balderdash."

And those pictures ... maybe tonight? Sorry friends.

Here are a few pictures, blurry and noisy but an addition to the documentation... A page about ASCII-based visualization from the coffee shop's 1973 yearbook of the future (see also). The left side of the crew, from my perspective. The right side. And the ceiling in Elsie's lounge, complete with strange lamp.

Posted! I'll tag them tonight, I just wanted to get them up this morning, so they'd be done.
posted by filthy light thief at 7:34 AM on January 28, 2010

The pictures are all tagged now!

Join [The Madonna Inn] for New Year’s Eve 2009! Or, maybe February or March, 2010? The rates I saw ranged from $179 to $449 for (what I believe is) one night, but Expedia just quoted $39 for Feb 21/22 at Travelodge Morro Bay Sunset, or $45 per night at an Luis Inn And Suites. I'm not sure if those links will last long, but it seems like there are some decent rates available in the area, should you want to spend the night. We also have space here.
