NYC meetup for dim sum! January 31, 2010 6:03 PM   Subscribe

New York and vicinity: Let's ring in the Year of the Tiger! Who's up for dim sum at Golden Unicorn on 2/21?

I'm thinking Sunday, 2/21 at 1 pm. Yeah, it's a week after the official Chinese New Year, but I'm guessing it will be way easier to get a table for a big group on 2/21 than on 2/14. Whaddya think?

Yay! I haven't had good dim sum in forever. Whenever, wherever, count me in.

Not going to be able to make this one. I'm going to be recovering from Fashion Week by taking my family to DC that weekend. :(

Enjoy, though!!

Just a thought: I know that every meetup I've attended everyone has been really good about the bill, but would it be easier if everyone got their own ticket? Or just get one ticket for the table and divide the bill evenly?
posted by spec80 at 11:04 AM on February 1, 2010

They appear to have some group lunch specials; not sure if our group is big enough to qualify for those, but that could be an easy way of doing it.

They appear to have some group lunch specials;

I don't know what a deep fried stuffed bacon roll is, but I want it!
posted by amro at 11:25 AM on February 1, 2010

(From one of the group lunch menus.)
posted by amro at 11:26 AM on February 1, 2010

Ooh, I want one of those, too. Not sure yet if I can come, but I am very tempted.
posted by ocherdraco at 4:06 PM on February 1, 2010

I don't know about the group lunch specials - one of my favorite things about dim sum is the surprise factor of not knowing what's going to turn up next when the rolly-cart of food comes around. Of course, that also means there's a surprise factor of never knowing what the bill is going to come up to when everyone is finally full, so, I can see the point of choosing from a fixed menu. (But, given a choice, I'd go with the mystery-cart. One of these days I may feel adventurous enough to try the chicken feet.)
posted by oh yeah! at 5:09 PM on February 1, 2010

I agree with oh yeah!, but I hope one of those mystery carts has some deep fried stuffed bacon rolls on it.

Is this the kind of dim sum that a vegetarian could manage to enjoy (without ceasing to be a vegetarian), or am I better off not trying?
posted by grobstein at 5:31 PM on February 1, 2010

Last time I went for dim sum I was a vegetarian. It's not easy, but it's definitely do-able.
posted by amro at 5:42 PM on February 1, 2010

Sounds good, but I'm busy Sundays. For what it's worth, I've always preferred the separate checks in group outings. Wouldn't want to get stuck paying for the guy who ate and drank 3x as much as you did, especially if trying to keep to a budget. But the group menus here seem to be a nifty solution to that.
posted by cmgonzalez at 9:02 PM on February 1, 2010

I think I can do this.
posted by brujita at 11:41 PM on February 1, 2010

grobstein: It can be difficult at Golden Unicorn. I am familiar with most dim sum dishes so I'd be happy to help you identify. What kind of vegetarian are you? Do you eat shrimp/seafood? If not, I'd be happy to split a la carte items with you.
posted by spec80 at 8:37 AM on February 2, 2010

I'm in.
posted by Jon_Evil at 12:06 PM on February 2, 2010

grobstein, every time I've gone for dim sum there were always some vegetarian options. Both when there was the surprise rolly-cart (which is more like "a consistent parade of rolly carts), and when I ordered from a menu.

As for me and this event: I don't know. One of two possible other things may be happening for me at this date, so I can't predict now.

I wish I could be in, but there's this big Exam happening on the 23rd and 24th and... I'm taking it, so, no, the 21st will find me in a panic, re-reading my outlines and cursing myself for agreeing to torture myself this way... *sigh*

Seriously, it's my third Bar Exam (passed the other two) so I won't freak out, but I will be making sure I know the finer points of NY law!

For those who attend: have fun!

I might go to this, or I might not. NASA called and they wanted to know if I would go into space, plus that weekend I have headlining at rock and roll show + orgy...so....? I mean really things are up in the air? Even if I said I'd go, something could come up. For instance a car accident or if I parachuted into the Amazon for rock and roll show + orgy. You have to be Zen about these things. Who really knows what Truth is/means? Even if I showed up what does it mean to be in a place? What if I weren't really paying attention? Or what if I sent a p-zombie who looked exactly like me and who acted exactly like me? Hmm maybe I will invite him to rock and roll show.

Anyway, hope that helps.

I don't know what this says about me, but I kind of enjoy getting elbowed out of the way by those elderly Chinese women who push the carts of food.

I wish I could be there but I'm dead. I'm a dead teen who had a beer party and perished in a fire because of heavy petting. I thought I was "tubular" but guess what I fucking wasn't. My 32 year old Wiccan boyfriend (we have slept together despite not being married or even common-law married) was making me play Dungons and Demons or whatever and the beer made my face die and nwo Im a corpse. Debating it. I'm in NJ, and it would be a train ride, but I'm really jonesing for a MeFi meetup.

Unfortunately, the Warren meetup looks dead in the water. Were I more organized, I'd try to get all of NJ's Mefites to go to Princeton.

No excuses, mccarty.tim! I'll be taking the train in from Princeton Junction.

If you can make it and you're not on this list, try to let me know by Tuesday, and then I'll make a reservation (if they'll take it). Some of you were "most likelys" and I didn't know if I should count you... If you're still not sure by then maybe I can add a few extra to the reservation for the last minute deciders.

A warning: I tried getting to some place in Chinatown a couple years ago on Chinese New Year, and learned the hard way that if you show up while the parade is going on the streets are practically unnavigable. We may want to a) either plan the time well to work around that, or b) each of us plan our transit well so as to avoid the parade route.
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 1:40 PM on February 15, 2010

Oh! I didn't realize the parade was also a week after New Year. That kind of defeats the point of doing it that day, doesn't it?
posted by smackfu at 1:52 PM on February 15, 2010

Oh, shit, I didn't either. And I even checked, though obviously not well.
posted by amro at 1:58 PM on February 15, 2010

Should we soldier on or change the date to the 28th?
posted by amro at 2:03 PM on February 15, 2010

If we can get a reservation for the 21st, I think we could keep that date, but if it's going to be a huge nightmare, the 28th works for me, too.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 2:28 PM on February 15, 2010

The 28th works somewhat better for me overall, actually (I'm more likely to have money by then).
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 2:31 PM on February 15, 2010

I have plans on the 28th but I can always catch up next time.

I'm there whichever day.
posted by ocherdraco at 1:24 AM on February 16, 2010

Okay, they don't take reservations for dim sum so I say we switch the meetup date to 2/28 so we have a fighting chance of getting a table and don't have to navigate a parade route to get to the restaurant. Sorry about the screw-up, guys. Hope that still works for most of you!
posted by amro at 8:29 AM on February 16, 2010

posted by spec80 at 8:45 AM on February 16, 2010

My photo is on my profile page too if you don't already know me and want to look for me when you arrive (plus I think a lot of you know each other already). 1. Me too... after the dimsum I went straight to my first hasidic Purim suedah. I'm so full right now that if the food were alcohol, I couldn't distinguish Mordecai and Haman. So that means I did Purim at least somewhat right.
