Come on. You're snowed in. Might as well plan a meetup, guys. February 10, 2010 5:52 PM   Subscribe

I know it's been tried before, but nth time's the charm. The Meetup Map says that there's never been a meetup in NJ. Let's rectify that with a meetup in the Princeton-ish area.

We're the most densely populated state, so why haven't we had a meetup? As a resident of Somerset county, the PA and NY meetups are too far away, so let's get something put together for NJ's MeFites.

I'm suggesting the Princeton area, because it's centrally located, and Palmer Square is pedestrian friendly. Of course, if another area would work better, that's great.

That's so close that I can't think of an excuse *not* to go!

I'll run this by my wife, but it sounds like the kind of thing we might do.

I may be interested.

You have and there are pictures to prove it.

Between the last attempt and this thread, I was in an accident with a Pepsi truck and my car was totaled. So, I can't make it.

But have fun if you pull together a NJ meet up and take lots of pictures.

Let's do it.
posted by Dick Laurent is Dead at 6:43 PM on February 10, 2010

I stand corrected. Still, that's less NJ meetups than I would like.
posted by mccarty.tim at 7:26 PM on February 10, 2010

Considering I live right outside Princeton, that would work for me, depending on the date.
posted by amro at 7:52 PM on February 10, 2010

Goddamn. Princeton's usually in my driving range (I worked there over the summer), but right now I'm in Philadelphia covered by snow. Perhaps another time.

Was there a date suggested already that I'm missing?
posted by amro at 7:51 AM on February 11, 2010

Well, how does either the 20th or 21st sound? I'm open to suggestions for restaurants.
posted by mccarty.tim at 7:53 AM on February 11, 2010

Or, if you want to do it this weekend, that's fine, too. I just thought two-ish weeks notice would be better for other people to work out plans.
posted by mccarty.tim at 7:54 AM on February 11, 2010

The 21st is the NY meetup.
posted by amro at 8:36 AM on February 11, 2010

K. Is Saturday the 20th still too close to the NY meetup, or should we push it back to the weekend after that?
posted by mccarty.tim at 9:51 AM on February 11, 2010

i KNOW that mrs. jaydee and i would love to come.

i also know that we can't make it on the 20th/21st.

even still, i know that there was much talk about an nj meetup. in fact, joe's old mill hill saloon, in trenton, right near the train station, was suggested as a place. it *is* a bit easier for folks without cars to get to . . . cos you just take the train and then walk three or so blocks.
posted by deejay jaydee at 2:22 PM on February 11, 2010

Mr. crankylex and I would love to attend. We're down in Toms River, but both Princeton and Trenton are accessible.
posted by crankylex at 5:06 PM on February 11, 2010

Too soon for me, lots to do the next few weekends. (And my car is making an ominous grinding noise, so driving meet-ups are a no go for me until I get it fixed or find a replacement)

I suggest the 27th or 28th.

posted by mccarty.tim at 8:32 AM on February 12, 2010

The 27th is fine for us.
posted by crankylex at 12:47 PM on February 12, 2010

27th sounds good to me.

posted by lapsangsouchong at 3:39 PM on February 12, 2010

I vote evening, if that's cool with everyone. Say 6 PMish?

Still not sure about Trenton or Princeton or elsewhere. I don't have anywhere specific in mind, I just wanted to see if there was any will for a meetup near me.
posted by mccarty.tim at 8:05 AM on February 13, 2010

Afternoon is best for me, but if evening is what's best for everyone else then evening should be fine.
posted by paisley henosis at 6:31 PM on February 13, 2010

Princeton would be easiest for me, because I live there. But, also because I live there, I know that it's awkward to get to by train. (The Dinky is lovely, it's my link to the rest of the world. But the fact that you need to do a 5-minute journey on a branch-line train that only runs every half hour to get anywhere makes those four miles to Princeton Junction very long indeed.) Upshot: I understand that Trenton might be easier, especially for anyone coming from the south.

Also, almost as soon as I arrived here I acquired, by osmosis and unwillingly, the Princeton fear of Trenton. Gotta fight that shit.
posted by lapsangsouchong at 7:16 PM on February 13, 2010

I've never been to the bar in Trenton. Does it have a restaurant area for under 21s? Also, how's the area around it? I looked it up on Yelp, and some of the reviews creeped me out a little. Granted, I don't usually take too much stock in Yelp reviews.
posted by mccarty.tim at 8:16 AM on February 14, 2010

Yeah, I'd prefer Princeton. But mccarty.tim, I think you just need to set the date, time, and place.

How about Chuck's at 6 PM on the 27th?
posted by mccarty.tim at 7:58 PM on February 16, 2010

I'm not sure you even would want to go to Trenton that late at night. I've been working there recently, there are some really bad neighborhoods in Trenton. My vote is for Princeton.
posted by AZNsupermarket at 1:59 AM on February 17, 2010

I'm partial to Thai Villiage (I have been there a few times - it has always been good). I have always wanted to check out Hoagie Haven, but I don't know much about it. I have never heard of "Chuck's". Is Chuck's any good? I'm down for anything - sounds like fun.
posted by AZNsupermarket at 2:09 AM on February 17, 2010

Chuck's is a wing joint. I completely forgot about Thai Village. I change my vote to Thai Village, since it has vegetarian options and I know it better.

Hoagie Haven is a great place, but they don't have seating.

So, Thai Village, at 6 PM, on the 27th is now my vote.
posted by mccarty.tim at 5:30 AM on February 17, 2010

I'd rather have wings than Thai, but my wife feels the opposite way. We're planning on being there.
posted by paisley henosis at 9:52 AM on February 17, 2010

Yeah, my g/f is a vegetarian. Assuming that she can make it, Thai would be all the more preferential.
posted by AZNsupermarket at 1:48 PM on February 17, 2010

Well, I live in Princeton, so here's my 2 cents:
  • Thai Village is a good choice for a group--lots of seating--so that's probably a good bet. N.B. It's not the best Thai in Princeton; that honor goes to Da's, which is at, of all places, the Princeton YMCA. No way in hell you could fit a group there, though, especially in the winter with closed outdoor seating.
  • Hoagie Haven is a cheap ($3-4 subs) and fast sub shop known for its price and being open late. Subs are big and invariably greasy. No seating---you line up, get your sub, and go eat it somewhere else. It's right across the street from Thai Village if you're curious. Two doors down is George's, which serves essentially the same thing as Hoagie Haven, except it also has wings, to satisfy those with wing cravings.
  • Chuck's is basically one level up from Hoagie Haven and George's; there's a little more food variety and it has seating, but it's not a fancy place by any means, it's where you go to get a cheap burger or wings. (I like cheap burgers and wings, so I like it, but I think Thai Village is probably a better choice for the group.)
  • Liquor licenses in Princeton are very hard to come by, so most places are BYOB. If people are interested, Varsity Liquors is also across the street from Thai Village, and they've got a good selection of wine and beer.
Anyway, I work maybe a couple hundred yards from Thai Village, so I'll see if I can stop by.

Man, I'm going to check out Da's tonight. But Thai Village at 6pm on 27th sounds fine. Shall we post this in the meetups list?
posted by lapsangsouchong at 3:38 PM on February 17, 2010

Sounds like we're in agreement. Yeah, let's post it. This is my first meetup. A mod does that, right? Do I need to contact one?
posted by mccarty.tim at 5:23 PM on February 17, 2010

For the record, general agreement seems to be 6 PM at Thai Village in Princeton on the 27th.

BTW, this is the first I heard of Da's. I'll have to check that out some time.
posted by mccarty.tim at 5:28 PM on February 17, 2010

Actually, I figured posting the date out. I never saw the "Add Meetup" link.
posted by mccarty.tim at 5:45 PM on February 17, 2010

Never heard of Da's either - I will probably check it out in the future.
posted by AZNsupermarket at 5:48 PM on February 17, 2010

So within 90 minutes of learning of Da's existence, I ate there. It's good. But definitely not right for a meet-up, there was a table of eight in there and they almost filled the place.

Pleased to see we're 'official' now!

Do we wear nametags with our usernames on them? :-P
posted by crankylex at 5:06 PM on February 19, 2010

Yes, namebadges in MetaTalk white/yellow on grey, pinned to a MeFI t-shirt. Those who are (for whatever team-spirit-lacking reason) unwilling to proclaim their allegiance in public should wear at least one prominent item in MeFi Front Page Blue--a handkerchief in the suit pocket, for example, or one of these backpacks.

Er...
posted by lapsangsouchong at 5:56 PM on February 19, 2010

Sure, I'll bring nametag stickers.

I might call ahead so that we'll have a table. How many are definitely planning on going?
posted by mccarty.tim at 12:57 PM on February 20, 2010

wow . . .scared of trenton? you all really ARE from jersey, aren't you . . . and alas, the jaydee family has a prior commitment on the 27th anyways . . . IF we can avoid our local flesh-eating zombies!!!!

btw . . . the mill hill saloon does have an eating area, and everything for the under/over 21s . . . but you have to make it past the alien queen and her acidic saliva . . . and then it starts to get hairy . . .
posted by deejay jaydee at 1:40 PM on February 20, 2010

Yeah, it's only like the 14th most dangerous city in the country, and most people going would be alone and unfamiliar with the city - why worry?
posted by amro at 2:13 PM on February 20, 2010 [1 favorite]

I think amro explained my feeling rather succinctly. Trenton is the 14th most dangerous city in America. I'm sure it has some nicer parts, but I more familiar with its not so nice parts because I had a job working in some of Trenton's really bad neighborhoods, so I may be biased.

Anyways, Princeton seems to be better for most people. So, I guess it worked out in the end.

What's the snow situation look like for the Princeton area? Is last-night's snowfall well taken care of, and are we expecting more today/tonight?

Our driveway was 3 inches of slush yesterday, I haven't worked up the courage to go check how bad it is today, yet.
