In which the protagonist is welcomed to her new home at a publick drinking house where much merriment occurs March 9, 2010 2:48 AM   Subscribe

Londoners!
Lets welcome iamkimiam, (who is leaving San Francisco) to the UK next week! What say you?

Can anyone help pick a not too crowded pub (oxymoron, I know) in the Bloomsbury area? Perhaps the Lamb? The Rugby?

I'd be game, depending on the day and the Lamb is a personal favourite.

Oh no! I forgot to include the date! Saturday the 13th I think is the only day she can make it.
posted by vacapinta at 3:38 AM on March 9, 2010

Is this during the day/afternoon or sometime that night? As it happens, I'll be in London on the 13th, needing to entertain myself all day until dinner plans that evening.

Daytime or evening is good for me - no idea about Bloomsbury pubs, but the Lamb looks decent.
posted by inire at 7:53 AM on March 9, 2010

Woot! I'm fillin' up the sidebar! The 13th would be preferable, but I'm also available on the 14th...it's the tail end of my trip and I've got nothing planned, other than to be in London and meet MeFites. Let's do it up!
posted by iamkimiam at 7:54 AM on March 9, 2010

I would be tentatively keen to meet up on the 13th. Moving flat on the 14th so that's probably out.

I can do the 13th, up to late afternoon/early evening.

I can't suggest a pub in the Bloomsbury area. My stomping ground (at around 10 years old) was the East End. My grandfather used to take me for walks and it was a family story that on one of the walks I said to him (when we may have wandered astray somewhat) 'Oh! look there's a pub, you must know where we are now Grandad'. Yeah, he had a reputation. He was a clippie. A bus conductor (I was surprised to not hear about him here), anyway here's him getting his 'golden watch' upon retirement. Another story was that he was on the bus one day and a passenger was staring at him and he said "Do I owe you money or something?", it was his cousin.
Sometimes I miss London and my grandparents.
What! We don't have graduate linguist programmes good enough for you in Sydney?
Shame on us.
Have a great time in the Old Dart.

It's no fair! First vacapinta leaves SF, now iamkimiam... Who's next?

YOU! (We've already got a seat and pint waiting for you at the pub.)

Hmmmm, interesting thought! Who's curating Meltdown this year?
posted by jasper411 at 10:10 AM on March 9, 2010

I'd be up for Saturday 13th, and the Lamb is fab. The Perserverance (also on Lambs Conduit St) isn't bad either! And then there's the Princess Louise on High Holborn... Decisions, decisions.
posted by HandfulOfDust at 1:12 PM on March 9, 2010

The Lamb looks great! Let's go there! What time?
(I really don't understand pub culture yet...y'all seem to start early and go leisurely, right? In the states, we start late and go later, but that's certainly not necessary...when in London and all...besides my brain has no clue what time it is yet...still fighting the jetlag.)
posted by iamkimiam at 1:28 PM on March 9, 2010

I'm in too. And I love the Lamb!

I can do the 13th.

How does 5pm sound? That way, all the people with early evening plans can at least stop by for a drink.
posted by vacapinta at 7:26 AM on March 10, 2010

5pm's fine by me.

I think its time to sidebar this!

When: Saturday, March 13 at 5pm
Where: The Lamb in Bloomsbury

See you all there!

is it too late to join?

i've just moved to London, and though i will be house-hunting like crazy, i'd love to meet some London MeFites!
posted by gursky at 12:42 PM on March 10, 2010

(i should probably add that i'm not a definite, in case you need numbers. i hope to be there, and have planned for it, but if i end up moving on Saturday, that might change my plans!)
posted by gursky at 12:49 PM on March 10, 2010

No RSVP required! You just...show up. And then we get all excited when you say, "Hi, I'm gursky* and I made it!" Then we drink beer and do shoutouts and act like dorks in public. What's not to love about that?

*Even if you're not gursky. Or are pretending to be gursky. gursky-ness not required. I like your name, gursky. Even though I have no idea what the heck it means.
posted by iamkimiam at 2:33 PM on March 10, 2010

hahaha. the book The History Of Love has a character called Leopold Gursky. it was the book i was obsessing over when i signed up for MetaFilter.

hopefully see you Saturday!

Ah just caught this on the sidebar.

Not sure if we can make it; Marielle and I are both active in UK politics and theres an election a-coming! So most weekends we're out canvassing or at a fund raiser, and even though the Labour party in Tower Hamlets is self-destructing right before everyone's eyes (Channel Four's recent Islamaphobic hatchet job seriously kicked off that train wreck) there is absolutely no need to let up the pressure. Maybe some of you folks want to come help us help kick them around a little?

So if we do come we're likely to be taking the early drink & dash option, but welcome to London and the UK gursky and iamkimiam respectively !!

That is entirely too close to the Institute of Education to pass up, especially since the Dude has library books to return. So I'm excited to say that this will be my first UK (ok first ever) meetup and looking forward to meeting you all!

I'll be there.

iamkimiam - it's easier in London to start earlier because many of us live in far-flung corners of London, or in the outer counties, and transport home can be difficult once it gets past about 11.15 or so. Pathetic, isn't it, one of the world's major cities has such a crap transport system.

ATTENTION NOR-CAL MEETUP ATTENDEES (no need to pay any attention to this iamkimiam):

Please note that the above nefarious activities being plotted by the London MeFite community, who no doubt are hatching their own plans to abscond her from our beautiful and free state of California. I implore you to investigate all possible avenues of foiling such deplorable modi operandum being executed by our erstwhile tyrannical British overlords, who would no doubt quicken at the idea of returning free colonists to their harsh rule. It behooves us to beseech her by all available means and in adequate time to reconsider such a drastic course of action and rather to join with us whereby to maintain her service to our corporate indignity and documented defiance to the crown.

One if by land, two if by sea. Communicate the message to the farthest flung reaches of the state via horseback, post haste.

Carry on.

Scots are playing the English tomorrow at 5pm. Might make it along later.
posted by YouRebelScum at 6:27 AM on March 12, 2010

Will be there at 5 with SO. Hopefully there will be some sort of secret Masonic code-phrase to identify other Mefites.
posted by inire at 8:35 AM on March 12, 2010

inire: That code-phrase tends to be "Matt Haughey"!

I will try to stop by for a short while at 5ish, but due to a massive change of plans I won't be able to stay past 6.

Very enjoyable meetup; great to meet our North American visitors, and likewise to catch up with those of you I'd met before.

Best of luck for the flat-hunting gursky. Kim, hope we will see you over here again soon.

... another yank here. will be in london until thursday and had posted this to procure local pub details, as well as see if I could wrangle a few mefites to meet up for a pint during my stay (will be moving to london in september to attend school, at which time i will relinquish my US mefite status for the next 4 years) - then i stumbled upon this thread - and what sounded like a lovely time and wondered if any of you folks might be available for another 'on the fly' meet up this month of march?
