Yet another Seattle meetup March 20, 2010 8:54 AM   Subscribe

Short(er) notice Seattle meetup: mrzarquon, ardgedee, rtha, and gingerbeer will all be in town March 27. We should attempt to get pissed meet up with them.

mrzarquon has tickets to the Washington Cask Beer Festival in the early afternoon, so maybe an early dinner?

Early dinner sounds good to me!
posted by grouse at 9:10 AM on March 20, 2010

The session we're attending ends at 4:00. So any time after that will work.

Unrelated to beer, I'm arriving Thursday and want to spend the afternoon visiting some bike shops in town - mostly as a tourist, but if I find some decent used parts to take home that'll be nice too. Recommendations welcomed.
posted by ardgedee at 9:26 AM on March 20, 2010

Greenwood would probably be too far...

which is a shame, as I feel we owe Greenwood a meetup after dismissing it as the equivalent of 1970s Times Square last time.

Hey Seattle,
rtha and gingerbeer are good awesome people. Go drink with them.

The 27th!? Noooo! I'm doing something in Issaquah from 10am-2pm and lord knows if I can get back in time. Maybe.

Also, cask beer festival I can't go to?! Horrors.

I haven't made one in ages, but I'll try...I should have a good window Saturday night between 6 and 9.

R343L, dammit! Since you moved from SF we've had a hellanumber of meetups, and now we're coming to Seattle and you might miss the meetup? Dammit!
posted by rtha at 11:26 AM on March 20, 2010

I am staying downtown, near 4th and Virginia, so I don't know if we would want to explore an belltown meetup, or somewhere within busing distance. Of course, we could go to Mike's Chili Parlor again, as it is a fairly short bus ride from the Seattle center (and who could say no to this).

Or there is the lava lounge with happy hour until 7pm on saturday, for folks interesting in catching up with us cask drinkers.

Folks may be able to pickup non online tickets for the cask festival (if you want to start drinking earlier) through these vendors.

(Hah, and I noticed that it would be a two year anniversary of the mike's chili parlor meetup next weekend as well)

hey wait! I'm in seattle! Sort of! I could come! Wait, am I cool enough to come to one of these?
posted by KathrynT at 5:02 PM on March 20, 2010

A week is just enough time for me to prepare to be civilized in public so I'll be there. (So long as by "there" we don't mean West Seattle or some other foreign country.)

I'll appoint myself and be the least cool one so everyone considering attending need not worry.
posted by vapidave at 9:00 PM on March 20, 2010

I will probably come as well and help hold down the uncool end of the bell curve, so no worry, KathrynT.
posted by hattifattener at 12:45 AM on March 21, 2010

Look, I'm coming, so your worries about being the least cool kid there are woefully unfounded.

posted by jacalata at 3:31 AM on March 21, 2010

I'd like to flake out but as usual I will probably decide to go at the last minute.

Just wanted to mention to the flakers, our last Seattle meetup was huge and fun. Let's make this one huge-er and funner.

If we are downtown, we should be thinking Shorty's or Zig Zag or Rendezvous.
posted by Slarty Bartfast at 11:25 AM on March 21, 2010 [1 favorite]

ooh, let's do Zig Zag. There is no way I would flake on a trip there. I might even bring extras. And/or get there early.
posted by jacalata at 12:40 PM on March 21, 2010

I'd be all over Zig Zag, I love that place. I've only gone there by myself or with one other person, so I've never thought of it as a "meetup space." How well do you think they will handle 10+ of us?
posted by mrzarquon at 12:54 PM on March 21, 2010

Zig Zag would be tight for 10. Could be done, but we'd have to lock up the booths early. Seattle meetups average about 15 IIRC (I think we had over 30 for the last one vs. 10 for the PAX meetup).

Shorty's could easily absorb a meetup.
posted by dw at 2:19 PM on March 21, 2010

hm. I've never been to any of them so have no idea how they'd deal with a group.
posted by jacalata at 2:27 PM on March 21, 2010

Well, for those not familiar with Shorty's, they also have pinball. And it is a few doors down from the Lava Lounge if we end up needing more space or different atmosphere.

Also: Veggie Dogs, for the herbivores among us.
posted by mrzarquon at 3:33 PM on March 21, 2010

I think Shorty's is a bad idea for those of us that have to drive from elsewhere. It's probably the worst parking situation in the city, especially on a weekend.

The Elysian was a good balance between the busing/driving folks, IMO. Also, pretty amazing service considering thirty people showing up unannounced with individual checks.
posted by lattiboy at 3:53 PM on March 21, 2010

I'm in, I haven't seen argedee in too many years and have been meaning to make it to a meetup.
posted by corprew at 6:43 PM on March 21, 2010

You walk into Shorty's and it's bar to the left and booths to the right. Walk past all that in the back is a bunch of pinball machines and a little lounge off to the right. It's dimly lit and would be a tight squeeze for more than 8 people.
posted by P.o.B. at 8:07 PM on March 21, 2010

I may be there.
posted by loquacious at 8:31 PM on March 21, 2010

Shorty's is *loud* as well. The brewpub/bowling alley thing works well because they can absorb a lot of nerds. I need the quiet so I can ask Slarty's real name, which has entirely slipped my mind.

Also, pretty amazing service considering thirty people showing up unannounced with individual checks.

That is a true story.

Hi, loq! Hope to see you there.
posted by stet at 10:35 PM on March 21, 2010

I propose Bill's Off Broadway. They've got ample seating, a friendly staff, and an internet jukebox (the good kind)

Also, not too busy on an early Saturday night and a VERY decent happy hour until 7PM every day.

They probably won't have that fair trade imperial stout you MUST have, but the beer is cold, the prices fair, and the pizza is just fucking awesome.

If somebody has a better idea, I'm all ears.
posted by lattiboy at 12:13 AM on March 22, 2010

Happy hour for Bill's:

Washington Micro Brews $2.75
Well Cocktails $3.25
PBR Pitcher special for $7
Lotsa $2-5 foods
posted by lattiboy at 12:16 AM on March 22, 2010

I enjoy Bill's very much, and for folks coming from out of town and willing to spend money for convenience, I believe you can park in the SCCC garage across the street for pretty cheap.
posted by mrzarquon at 10:39 AM on March 22, 2010

It's $7 dollars to park in the SCCC garage, pretty reasonable considering. I like Bill's also.
posted by Errant at 11:18 AM on March 22, 2010

Okay, because we don't have much time I'm going to do this:

Bill's Off Broadway

Also, street parking is doable in this neighborhood before 8PM on the weekends. Check the side streets West of Bill's.

(by 'there' I mean Bills. Garage would work for a future hypothetical meetup and I will try and remember to suggest it).
posted by jacalata at 6:25 PM on March 22, 2010

In my experience the Garage is very expensive and kinda "fratty". Or as fratty as Capitol Hill can ever get.
posted by lattiboy at 7:31 PM on March 22, 2010

I will be in town on a visit - in fact, I'll be close enough to walk to Bill's. I do appreciate the "uncool protection team"; I may well need you folks to help me face a huge urban mefi meetup (or at least to be able to enter a sports bar). I will study my notes ahead of time.

BTW, I am old enough that some of you might even remember me from my time in Seattle decades ago (CCC - Susurrus3250 ... +The Well +IRC via UW ... etc.). Scary ... Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I am too old to remember any of you. I will deny everything. Beer sounds good.

posted by grouse at 10:37 AM on March 23, 2010

I'm not a big fan of the Garage. It's Jillian's with a younger, frattier crowd. Also, their food is overpriced.

And my experience with meetups there is that it's hard to have a conversation because the music is too damn loud.

I have a thing in the afternoon, but I'm gonna try to make it after. My first meetup!

So, for those of us who have never been to a meetup before...how does one find the meetup once we're at the location? Stand in the middle of the room and bellow "where my mefites at?"

Sorry I missed everybody. I wanted the opportunity to see how people on the coast do meetups, and bring their seekrit knowledge inland so that the folks in Michigan could manage more than one a year.

But who knew that attending a beerfest could later compromise ones vertical integrity? WHO KNEW?

It was a very nice interlude in what was an otherwise awful day for me.

But it was so loud in there, at least for my ears, that I could barely understand a word anyone said.

So, I was not such a great conversationalist last night.
