Brooklyn meetup? Other boroughs a possibility too. March 20, 2010 3:04 PM   Subscribe

I'll be in Brooklyn From the 23rd of March until the 28th. Anyone want to meet up? I'm mobile, I can go anywhere in New York City people want to meet up. The weekend is probably best, either Friday or Saturday. Whatcha say?

Some other folks are going to be in town too (gman and Uburovias), and I was already working on something for the evening of Saturday, March 27th in Manhattan. gman was hoping for sushi for dinner followed by a bar. I'm going to scout around tonight in the village for good venues.

Is Carlton a borough, or just a hotel? That's where I'll be staying, anyway. I think it's somewhere in Manhattan, so that should narrow it down.

Let's keep it in Brooklyn, because the meetups skew rowdier and drinkier there for some reason. Last one in DUMBO ended, memorably*, with a game of Drinking Whiskey Out of Measuring Cups in zoomorpic and Optimus Chyme's kitchen.

*actually I don't think anyone actually remembers that portion of the evening.

Please no more brooklyn meetups. I don't have insurance at the moment so I should probably, you know, not get cirrhosis.

I'm only arriving about a day or so before, with something like a 12-hour timezone change, so would prefer to keep the location as local as possible - unless it's a breeze to get to Brooklyn & back from East 25th St; I have no idea.

posted by kkokkodalk at 11:43 PM on March 20, 2010

There is highly likely an Rubulad party on Friday the 26th and this happens on Saturday the 27th.

So, good weekend for a meetup. I'll be at the Rubulad, for sure. Met my SO there two years ago to the day so it is a ritual party.
posted by vrakatar at 11:44 PM on March 20, 2010

Wait, aren't the Rubulad things those enormous warehouse parties? They are insane but not exactly meetup material.

For Brooklyn venues, ReBar worked really well last time, and I liked Bar Great Harry or whatever we went to in December.
posted by zoomorphic at 7:42 AM on March 21, 2010

Yeah, they get insane, but they go late, so meetup people can come check it out when the meetup starts to wane.

Ok, Ubu. Here we go. Manhattan is an island, and one of the five boroughs of New York City. It's where most of the "famous" New York stuff is. Often, people in the other four boroughs refer to it as "the city." Brooklyn is another borough, which lies to the Southeast of Manhattan, across the East River. To give you a bit of perspective, Brooklyn alone has a larger population than Brisbane and Perth combined.

Things in Brooklyn tend to be less expensive, which is why many of us folks like to have meetups there. I like to have meetups there.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm in.

I prefer non-weekend meetups because bars are less crowded, though.
posted by Jon_Evil at 11:14 AM on March 22, 2010

Feel free to continue the discussion, guys, but this meetup will be taking place in Manhattan. We're getting a good deal on a sushi place on the LES (courtesy of a fellow Mefite)- once I confirm I'll post all the details, thanks.

Ok, here's the plan for Saturday (3/26) evening:

Dinner at Sushi Uo at 6:30 p.m.
newpotato works here and is going to put together a $25 prix fix for 12 of us- some platters and then we can order some stuff, too. Vegetarians can be accommodated. Drinks can be purchased separately, of course. Please let me know, in thread, if you plan to attend- we only have 12 seats, so flaking out and/or being late is strongly discouraged. Right now, I have 4 confirmed on the list- our out-of-towners (gman, Kattalus, UbuRoivas) and myself.

Drinks downstairs at 151 from ~8:30 on. I haven't been to 151 since the Great Transit Strike Meetup of 2005. Oh man, that was fun.

I wouldn't want my bro to take up a seat that could be taken by a mefite that wants to enjoy dinner with fellow mefites, and as he's not of drinking age getting into 151 would be hairy. Sad to miss out on the out of towners, but if you guys plan on doing some kind of secondary meetup on another date I shall try to make it there.

posted by spec80 at 1:10 PM on March 23, 2010

Hey, I know somebody who hosts a Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School - is it a kind of franchise, or was the local version just a direct ripoff? It's basically life drawing, and you can be as talentless as you like. And it's hosted in a pub.
posted by UbuRoivas at 1:28 PM on March 23, 2010

We do a weird not-really-a-franchise-but-it-is thing with the branches. Is it in Sydney cause our Australian branches where one of the first.

Yep, lifedrawing, in a pub, ours is more theatrical/show-like but it's same idea.
posted by The Whelk at 1:35 PM on March 23, 2010

I got all turned around trying to find my way back to the Bleecker street station for the 6 train, but eventually ended up in Little Italy, so I bought a box of cannoli to take home for breakfast, which made it feel more like a purposeful sidetrip than another "why do I have no sense of direction and why is my iPhone not being helpful?" journey.
