thanks thankyou AskMe question March 30, 2010 4:32 PM   Subscribe

What's the best way to thank people who answer an Ask Me question?

I had some really nice answers to this recent question. I've posted a follow-up comment and marked the question as resolved. Is this the best way to convey my thanks to those who contributed to the thread? I could send individual MeMails, I guess... I just want all who contributed, some of whom may not read MetaTalk, to know that I sincerely appreciated everyone's help.

In the thread or via MeMail. But, really, marking something Best Answer is all the snickerdoodle this good doggie needs.

In honor of the holiday, I'll accept vacuum packed, airmailed brisket in exchange for good answers.

I miss brisket. A little charoset would be nice, too.

I like to be told how much you liked the Todd Rundgren record I recommended, like when you're all "Which Zhu Zhu Pet would my nephew like best?" and I'm all "You want 'A Wizard, A True Star' from 1973" or when you're all "Should I eat this mushroom?" and I'm all "Yes, 1985's 'POV' will be delicious" so basically lifetime service in my zombie Todd army is just fine, thanks.

Pretty much everything suggested in this thread is great, but one thing that somebody did once for me (that was both nice and a little odd) was to submit my website to stumbleupon.

This is probably much to serious compared to the other replies.

I'm a big fan of askme and it seems like pure luck to get so many thoughtful and intelligent people here to answer questions on almost any random subject.

But really it's the, strict but not power crazed, mods who really deserve the thanks.

I would, but I respect biscotti's dog knowledge too much.

But yeah, me-mail or e-mail have worked best for me.

Best answer, thank you in the thread. I've also memailed a person in cases where the resolution to the problem came awhile after the post was originally made, and I'm not sure if they will see the thread update. But I don't think that's expected as the norm.

What's the best way to thank people who answer an Ask Me question?

Dump the motherfucker already. Seriously. We're tired of reading about it.

Also, don't eat the halibut filet you left on the windowsill overnight.

But if you're not going to DTMFA ... mmm, halibut.

Is there some kind of pie exchange I missed out on?

No, the pie exchanges don't come into play until 2014. But you should make sure your state is participating in them.

Seconding the 'pay it forward.' As low as AskMe's signal-to-noise ratio is, it could always improve. What you did already as thanks is just fine; a thoughtful contribution to another question would be the cherry on top.

Mmm, cherry pie.
posted by Hardcore Poser at 10:06 PM on March 30, 2010

In seriousness, though - the followup saying thanks and explaining what you did and enjoyed is the best, I think.
posted by LobsterMitten at 10:12 PM on March 30, 2010

Yeah, see if you can solve one of the really stubborn unanswered ones. I accomplished this once and felt like I won the lottery.
posted by sallybrown at 10:12 PM on March 30, 2010

I like pay it forward, too. If an answer's been outstanding, I'll memail and thank the answerer personally. Have done that every once in a while with anonymous questions I've posted, too.

Speaking of which... I always forget that memail is there. Which explains why I have several dozen unread memails at the moment. Dammit. Looks like I know what I'm doing tomorrow. :P

I mark best answers sometimes, but since everyone helps by responding and contributing, I tend to thank everyone on the thread.
posted by goofyfoot at 10:36 PM on March 30, 2010

I'm with SpacemanStix. Provide best answers (you should always do this if your question gets succesfully answered) and follow up with thanks in thread, which just gives a nice sense of resolution. Plus - don't forget to add the 'resolved' tag if your question gets a good answer - you'll get a autoMeMail from AutoMatt to remind you of that anyway a month later, but it's good practice.

I have, I think, MeMailed if an answer brought up fascinating additional side issues or was particularly awesome, but that's superspecialsquirrelstuff.

. . .tend to thank everyone on the thread itself.

I've developed this new exchange market for pies. If you're pedestrian and boring you can simply swap pies for cash or other pies. You can also place orders for future pies. But! Here's where the genius comes in - you can place orders on eating future pies.

Of course, someone might eat that pie before you get to it. So, you can insure that pie and get replacement pie if your original order is eaten before the terms of the contract are fulfilled. You can even get new pie if someone else's pie gets eaten!

I call it a "pie default swap".

This also opens a whole set of derivatives markets with cakes, crullers, and custard. Everyone will be swimming in pie for the rest of eternity! The value of pies can only go up!
