For the Love of loquacious May 24, 2010 11:18 AM   Subscribe

As many of you know, loquacious landed himself in the hospital the other day. He's on the mend, but due to his extenuating circumstances many people have been compelled to assist, and some additional fund raising events have been set up.

Auction

Beginning Tuesday, May 25th at 10am EST, the first listing will appear in the eBay store.

Additional listings of MeFite donations will appear daily at 10am EST.

NYC Meet-up

Saturday, June 5th at 7pm EST

MeFite newpotato has generously provided the venue for this meet-up. Please join The Whelk for an evening of FUNdraising at St. Jerome's located at 155 Rivington St.

To avoid missing the fund raising activities, be sure to get there early.

UPDATE

Here's the latest from loquacious.

Welease the waffle!

I have no original arts/crafts to contribute, buy I'm going to dig through my old T-shirt collection & my old poster collection when I get home tonight & see what I can dig up that's worth raffling. I've got some unique, historical & interesting shirts, as well as some Kozik prints from his first years of printing, before he moved to SF. It'd be hard to part with one of those, but I hopefully have a duplicate of something good.

gman, The Whelk, you're a couple of good eggs. This is pretty great.

Can you talk a little bit about the logistics of the eBay stuff? I've got a bunch of things I'd be willing to donate (mainly DVD box sets), but I see that the eBay store is in Canada - would people be listing/shipping the items themselves? Shipping the stuff to you for listing? Sending you descriptions for listing, then shipping directly to the winner? (Guessing it's the last of those three)

eBay-ignorant question here: librarina and I have some homegrown poultry to donate. However, some of our chickens have not yet been hatched and, under the terms of our poultry permit, the ready-to-cook birds will need picked up on-farm within 48 hours of "processing."

Misunderstandings about location and pick-up dates and so forth seem like they might cause trouble. Is there a way to mitigate this without risking gman's feedback? We could also auction our stuff separately since, by definition, it's going to be a smaller audience.

The benefit to the latter option is that it gives me the opportunity to declare the first annual metafilter livestock auction. Let's see the New York Times style section figure that one out!

On preview: Speaking of good eggs, we can contribute some of those as well (chicken and duck only, I've tried to convince librarina to start a flock of gmans and The Whelks but she won't go for it. We've got the pasture for it, but we don't have the server space). Again, we're not licensed for off-farm sales, so the same complications apply.

I spent a fair amount of time with our pal this morning in the hospital and I just want to make sure everyone is aware -- these fundraising efforts go a long, long way to helping loquacious get back on his feet. There are *some* support services that can be mobilized over the next several months, but money in the bank is a critical piece of a workable plan and without it the situation (as these things often turn out) could be far, far worse.

Please keep giving what you can. And to everyone that's given, organized, and otherwise -- you people are amazing.

FYI, we're having a Seattle meetup on June 1st. Although not a well constructed fundraiser, myself and many other MeFi folk will be competing to win the trivia jackpot for Loq.

Weirdly, I didn't ask if he was coming. I should really work on my planning skills.....

I'll donate a $50 credit/gift certificate from Vortex Records in Toronto. Presumably it's best to eBay it as the shop doesn't do mail order. However, if someone not-local bids/wins, I can ship something for them personally as long as it uses up the whole credit in one shipment. (I don't want to make multiple trips.) If it's local, the thing'll work like a gift certificate and they can spend it over time.

For the ann arbor area crowd... I'll donate a cruise up the chain of lakes (Huron River, portage lake) for two in an unsinkable Boston Whaler (ok, it's only 13 feet long, but it's a fun ride up the river on a peaceful afternoon).. to be concluded with dinner (my treat) at the Portage Yacht Club.

I'll work with folks on dates (the club is open about 5 days a week, weekdays are best and more peaceful than Saturday or Sunday). We could do this most anytime during the summer (other than the one week I might be on vacation)

Get well loquacious.

I wish I could do more, but, well, in the land of hypothetical maybes, I'm willing to put up dinner for two mefites in Japan (sort of western suburbs of Tokyo), at a lovely izakaya in Makuharihongo, home of the best fried chicken wings in Japan, if not the world. Also on the menu, skewers of grilled duck meat, delicious slices of raw horse, and fantastic fresh made potato chips. For loquacious, my treat (roughly a $60 value!). I don't know if it's viable or not, but if it's okay, please let me know.

Again, if you're auctioning something off - which I suggest you do if you can't physically get it to NYC by June 5th - talk to gman

if you are raffling it and need to get it physically to NYC by June 5th, talk to me.

In anyway cause, your tri-state area asses better come to this meet-up/raffle so we sell a lot of tickets to give away all this wonderful, wonderful stuff, so I am sticking it to the wall.

Ghidorah, I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying there... Do you mean you'll donate that $60 to loquacious? Or that you're willing to host a FUNdraiser in Chiba? Because, heck, I'd be willing to travel out to Makuharihongo to pitch in for loquacious if I can have the best chicken wings in the world while I'm at it. おごってくれなくてもいいし。

But I guess if I'm the only one to take up your offer, it'd be kind a lonesome fundraiser, ne?

misozaki, and I guess, gman, I was trying to say that I'd add that 'experience' to the auction, if it was acceptable. Paypal and I aren't exactly friendly, and I was thinking that if someone were to win said bid, it would be me taking the winner +1 to the izakaya, and I'd cover the check. Mefites seem to come to Japan with relative frequency, I thought it might be a workable idea (winner's money gets to loquacious, winner has good food, possible meetup springs up in the wilds of western Chiba, and beer is drunk. Everyone's a winner!), but if it's not, I'm not sure what else I can do, though I'd like to help.

Hi. Does anyone read the posts down here? :)

Semii off topic update in current thread.

I'm ok. Chest wound is healing, lung feels stable, breath depth is fine and stable. I'm in a decent hotel room over on the south edge of belltown. I slept for about 12-14 hours and I could go back for more, but I should probably go hunt down some food, coffee and toiletries first.

I have clean socks and underwear, there's laundry on site. I'm considering a different hotel/motel but I think I'll have difficulty finding another room that's this nice for the same price considering it's memorial day weekend and all.

Please don't be alarmed if I'm at the keyboard a bit less for the next few days, I'm just resting and recovering, taking care of my head and then working on housing logistics.

I might even make it to the meetup, but that just depends on a lot of things.

Yes, after meeting THE ONE AND ONLY LOQUACIOUS we went for a walk, during which time we saw a guy getting arrested while a group of people, including a guy in a gorilla costume, looked on. I do not know what the gorilla was doing there, but no one else seemed to notice him. When we got back to where I'd parked, my car was gone. Also I met Loquaciuous, who is an amazing guy and just as sweet and vibrant in person! Those little skulls on the necklace have gazed their hollow stare at the face of Loquacious. You know you want them. (it is a good necklace for a guy OR a girl, BTW.)

Hey there. Sorry I'm a little late on the update, but I wanted to wait until plans were more concrete.

First off, I'd like to thank everybody for their incredible generosity. Whether you donated goods, dropped a supportive email, posted an in-thread comment, bid on an eBay auction, or sent cold hard cash, we appreciate every last bit.

Thanks to all your support, loquacious has some awesome new opportunities available to him. As of Monday, he will have the keys to his first very own place. Your generosity has afforded loquacious the following:

a) almost three weeks of temporary accommodation
b) a phone connection to friends and family
c) and this is the big one, nearly one year of rent in his new apartment
d) some basic housewares and a futon to sleep on
e) set-up/deposit on his utilities

So loquacious is on the mend, and his heartfelt thanks goes out to each of you.

Fuckin' right people!
