I hope my concerns in this post are addressed.
I have been hanging around the sports torrent/streaming world for several years now, and I know that the last thing anyone involved in doing the actual capping/streaming wants is to have their work publicized.
As I said, I know that the site referred to in this post isn't exactly a secret, but I don't think it should be hanging out in public on AskMeFi for everyone to see. Why make the problem worse?
Pro sports is a big business, with all the usual multi-billion dollar media companies involved. And believe me, they DO care that this stuff is going on. If it ever became an MSM story, everyone involved would be in a lot of trouble. We shouldn't contribute to that risk.

Yeah, if they didn't want their site public they could make it invite only, it's not really Metafilter's job to protect people from themselves when it comes to this sort of thing. May not be MeFi's place to publicize them either, but that would be for separate reasons.

Sure, but isn't here a certain code of honour when it comes to this sort of thing? I'm sure nobody would be too impressed if we had a bunch of posts up on the blue advertising all the various illegal torrent and stream sites out there.
Yes, broadcasting companies are aware of what's going on, but they leave it alone as long as most people don't know about what's going on. If/when this becomes a MSM story, it'll all be gone. And I don't think the "it's not our job to protect people from themselves" argument will give anyone any solace at that point.

It was a dick move by the poster, but there's nothing you can do about it. That's the way black markets work and progress. If the squares kept their traps shut there'd be a lot more of that stuff, but whaddya gonna do.

There's kind of a weird double standard you're trying to push there. I think you would've had the higher ground if you had just flagged the post, emailed the mods to request that they take down an illegal site, and leave it at that. To claim illegality on the one hand and nobility on the other might not fly far in these skies.
I flagged the posts and posted my own comment, assuming that the mods would look at the problem at that point. Admittedly communicating with the mods themselves might have been the next logical step, but, well, I can't change the past.
Note when I made this post that I didn't refer to the name of the site, or discuss the nature of the issue in the question (only in the details). I tried my best.

We saw the one flag and looked at it and then talked to eachother [cortex and I] and sort of shrugged. It's one of those things where yeah, we see your position, but if we removed the comment it was likely that anyone doing a quick Google would put it there because it IS the answer to the guy's question. So I know we're on the flip side of the usual illegal angle we're looking at on AskMe, but our feeling was that even if we removed the comment someone else would make it and we're not going to police the thread to make sure no one posts a link to that site. Sorry about that.

Somebody's breaking the law; I sympathize with their plight, and I don't like "big sports" any more than you do. But it doesn't make sense to abrogate a bit of our community freedom in order to fight a lost cause and vainly attempt to protect people from risks they were well aware of when they took up torrenting and such. I mean, yeah, I don't want to see people go to jail or get in trouble – but is anyone who's doing this myp2p thing really unaware of the possibility that that might happen? And if they're not unaware of the possibility, aren't they choosing that risk - not us?

I see...I'm glad the matter was given serious thought. I have to say that I'm still not convinced that the answer would have kept re-appearing no matter how many times you deleted the first one. Do old AskMe questions really get accessed all that much? I figure in a month's time - at the most - few people would even see the question anymore, let alone try to answer it.
But of course it's your decision. Years from now, though, when my kids-to-be are asking me what happened to all the great free stuff that you used to be able to get on the Web (before Apple and Rupert Murdoch took it all over), I'll be telling them this story.

All I'm saying is: when all the torrenting sites are taken down and the myp2p stuff all goes away, it sure as hell won't be metafilter's fault for mentioning them. If you want to pin your hopes to impossible dreams and inevitable failures like illicit file-sharing, go right ahead, but don't drag us into it.

You're on the winning side of this battle because the other side has no feasible way of fighting their enemy in the long run. Maybe people wouldn't try to answer it. But I search for things when I have a problem all the time and a MetaFilter post comes up in the top 5. That's usually the best information I can get.

I got some great resources via Mefi Mail (including myp2p) to fill in the gaps where I can't pay for the sports that I want (and where I can download my favorite all-time games played years ago!)
It's not the route I wanted to take, but if the NBA and the NFL doesn't see the Canadian market as worthwhile enough to offer streaming service, I don't feel a lot of guilt in taking it for free. I think that there's validity in the argument that it's stealing, but realistically, they're not giving me an option to pay for it and I appreciate that there are resources out there so that I'm not just excluded from enjoying a particular sport because the market I am in isn't worth it.

There are plenty of important and serious sports--the Marathon Des Sables, Paris-Brest-Paris, the Vendee Globe, SSWC.
But NFL games, or American major-league soccer, for chrissake? Those are like the Two and a Half Men and Insane Clown Posse of athletic competition.

Beyond parody! Let's take parody to the extreme! Vendee Globe? Marathon des Sables? I had to look that shit up, but it was totally worth it. I was going to put Paris-Dakar in there too, but I already mentioned Paris once.
I mean, I read that comment about the-web-before-Apple-and-Rupert-Murdoch-took-it-over, and then I read that comment about Banksy and folk music. It's a tough field of competitors, and if you want to get noticed, you've got to go for that 1080 Triple Lindy hat trick grand slam.

The picture quality and audio of these sites are so bad that it's not really a concern of real sports networks. Ever try to watch a game on sopcast or athe.fr or whatever it's called?
Believe me, they don't care if you stream something. They know you're going to bail on it before half time or as soon as the novelty of streaming something has worn off.

You essentially wilfully ignored the niceties and norms of the site. What makes is worse is that you seem to be a fairly active member, rather than some drive-by spammer. It's a sense of minor betrayal mixed with "you're better than this".
The screwing around that goes on in here is mostly zany hi-jinks and wordplay (with some fish, taters, HAMBURGER and beans thrown in for sustenance). That's not what you were doing.

Let's not forgot watching stuff on espnnameofthemoment.com. I tried watching the US-Turkey game and it was crap. I'd sit through it if I have to at that quality, but I also had a TV right next to me that I didn't want to turn on because I was being lazy.
