MeFi/MeTa seem very zippy to me March 7, 2002 10:19 AM   Subscribe

Has mathowie got some more bandwidth or other upgrade? MeFi/MeTa seem very zippy to me, past couple of days.

Somewhere in MeTa in the last couple of days, someone said that everyone changed their preferences to view only the past three days on MeFi to save on bandwidth. As soon as I saw that, I changed my preferences. I'm not sure, but others may have as well. In any case, I think it deserves to be repeated.

When the bandwidth went down the tubes sometime last summer, we all did the same thing (and I've kept it down to two days view myself since then). I think that the 3000 or so members added since then have helped by doing the same. Or maybe it's just the normal ebb and flow. I couldn't connect twice today and I'm coming in from a mostly unused T1.

I'm on a one day view, and I'd go for even less if that was an option. Like if we had the choice of just viewing threads posted on this actual day, I'd go for that. So when I'd come in in the morning, the MeFi page would be stark and clean. Like a virgin waiting for me to soil her.

Blue -- I did the same. Your theory might be correct.

Jeez Chef, now I feel all dirty.

Yeah, ColdChef, they all say that, then go back to the experienced pro for the good lovin'.

It may well have something to do with this.

You mean this?

Whoops, I had mine set to 4 days. There's no reason to keep it at that length, because discussions only occasionally last that long anyway.

... I also set my font size to 9pt. You know, to keep the pages small. I do it to help you guys.

*Lobster blush* I had mine at maximum strength. It's now been cruelly cut down to 3. I hope I can notch it up a day or two if the withdrawal symptons are too severe... What next? A Don't Refresh Day? Please no.

when you're not logged in the default is really high, maybe if that was changed to 3 days (which i think is all people would read anyway) that would help

Seems to be broken for me. I already had the number of days set as 2, but I get like 4 1/2. I'm using Mac ie 5.1

*paranoid look*

Ok, it really is set to three now. Honest.

Mefi pumps a 100 gigs of ascii text a month? That's frightening. No wonder the server times out all the time in the day. I set my view for 1 day. We should start a more visible campaign somehow...

it's not that big of a deal to change your display, there are only about 3k members hitting the front page each day, so as long as they are not hitting it all the time, it's not that great on the server's total load.

The non-logged in people don't even hit the database, so they're ok, they just see a flat file created once every five minutes

Alright then, my setting is back at 7 days ! =)

Changing the number of days displayed is ok. Not super good though. Better to type short sentences. Takes load off the syntax engine. Doesn't have to parse so much. Keeps CPU happy.

Uh, I can't seem to get it to take at 3 days only either. So it seems I'd be helping out if I *didn't* log in unless I wanted to comment...?
