Help us test a new version of Live Preview for comments.
The Live Preview box under comments has always been a mixed blessing. On one hand you could quickly see what your comment was going to look like without refreshing the page, but on the other hand the preview wasn't entirely accurate because it didn't go through the sanitizing filter to strip out, say, image tags. So you could assemble a post that looked fantastic in Live Preview complete with embedded YouTube videos and images—only to have those things stripped on post. This comes up enough that we even have a FAQ entry about this. We were resigned to living with it.
So this difference between Live Preview and official preview came up again the other day. But this time around member Khalad offered to help fix it. And he did! By reverse engineering our server-side filters into a client-side version!
So we're testing his code in this thread only. Give it a try and see what you think. If it looks good, we'll push this out to the rest of the site. The bottom line is that Live Preview (in this thread only right now) should match what you get when you click the Preview button.

Yeah, as mentioned in the other thread, the problem of showing HTML within HTML is still with us. The only thing we're trying to do here is make Live Preview match what you'll get once posted.
This change won't solve all problems, just make things a little better.

Blockquotes are sometimes a nuisance as they don't show the weird spacing around them correctly.This seems to have fixed that problem.

That's a feature of HTML, not unique to the preview here. You shouldn't be able to write html inside a pre tag anywhere and have it show up as escaped.
Pb, something happens with pre tags, which adds newlines in the activity page.

We allow blink. Some browsers don't support it though, and you can turn it off in Firefox. I did.

Weird thing...after you type out a comment and hit the Preview button, the live preview goes away. Don't know if this is intentional or not, but it happens.

I think you're doing it wrong, grumblebee. <pre> based layout is never going to look reasonable in a variable width font (like the comment box). You either have to count spaces carefully, or guess and then tweak until stuff lines up where it should.
That all seems way too obvious, maybe I'm missing your point..

Yep, did the same thing with the card suits. Not a huge problem, but a bit weird looking.

Good find, Mike1024. I think the main thing is that you'd see the tag in Live Preview and do something to fix it up. So even though there isn't an exact match with the server-side filter, I do think the Live Preview code is doing its job.

Apparently it still accepts the same shortcut as before - if you don't want to take the time to both bold and underline something you can just put an empty A tag (as if you were about to type A HREF) and have it both bold and underline but not make a link.

pb, the extra line spacing in the live preview was happening only in IE7/WinXPsp3 that I could tell.
It doesn't seem to happen in firefox or chrome.

Mike1024: the live preview produces one result (both lines indented, </blockquote visible), the manual preview a different one - the missing > is put in. But the text in the edit-post box gets an < put in instead of the blockquote fixed - so doing a second manual preview gets me back to how the automatic preview showed the post; both lines indented.
This one is weird. Quoting it so I can keep track. There are some things you can type that change when you preview, and then preview again. The non-live preview sometimes changes your post when you repeatedly preview. This is one of those.

I hear ya Mike1024, but I'm sure of a way around that. We don't have a way for the Live Preview to say, "Please go back and remove...". There's no messages beyond what you see in the window. I think people do that so infrequently, that bothering them on submit is ok. And once someone learns they can't do it, they shouldn't need that reminder much.
