And the Meffy goes to... August 26, 2010 6:16 AM   Subscribe

I had a dream about MetaFilter.

I was awakened in the middle of the night last night when my roommate came home and tripped into a half-packed box staged in the living room for my impending move.

Groggy, but slightly too awake to go immediately back to sleep, I open up my computer to read some email, MetaFilter, etc. I notice that I'm close to a favorites milestone here, then go to back to sleep.

And then I dreamed that I was on a MetaFilter award show, the Meffies, accepting my award (a gilded plate of beans), clutching it to my chest shouting, "you like me, you really like me!" Sally Field style.

No, really. (I inhaled a lot of cleaning product yesterday readying my apartment to move out, maybe that's why.)

Anyway, this has made me wonder--
Which users have the most favorites? Which posts and questions have been your personal favorites? Are there any awesome people (aside from you, yes, I know you're awesome) I should be linked to so I can be alerted to all the awesome things they constantly post?

Allow me to dissuade all of you MetaFilter-is-not-a-contest types by saying, "duh." As a relatively high user number member, I find a lot of good old content by clicking through various users' favorited posts to see what great stuff I've missed, and I'm sure others do, too.

Bonus question: Have any of YOU dreamed about this place? We can form a support group or something.

Sometimes I dream about MetaFilter, but the dreams are about using the website. Yup, I read MetaTalk in my dreams. My dreamlife is ridiculously boring. Like, last night I had a dream that a real-life friend called me to ask me to come over and watch a TV show, so I walked over from my house to her house and then we talked a bit about television. That's it, that was the extent of my dream.

Which users have the most favorites?

You can get a pretty good idea about this from the mefi infodumpster. It won't give you site-wide totals, but the last two lines in the "people" section will give you per-subsite lists, separately for comments and posts.

Bonus question: Have any of YOU dreamed about this place?

Yeah, but like Kattullus, I have occasionally dreamed about just using the site in a fairly ordinary manner. Yawn.

I'll check the rulebook, but I don't think you can say "duh" to the MetaFilter-is-not-a-contest types while also announcing that in the middle of the night while you were half-asleep you went to your computer and noticed that you were "close to a favorites milestone."

I definitely dream about Metafilter, especially as I'm drifting off to sleep and I come up with AMAZING ideas for posts that I totally don't remember the next day.

I also daydream about being asked to be a mod because of the respectful and considerate way I interact with the community, and then I regretfully explain that I am very flattered but I have other stuff on my plate (not beans) so unfortunately I am not able to be a mod but I am happy to help in any way I can and I have a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

Then I realize that I don't say that much and probably no one has any idea who I am, which is totally the only thing standing between me and my dream of being asked to be a mod.

I've dreamed of the mods as being a super hero team, like the Fantastic Four. Except they have a giant bike, instead of a flying car and Jessamyn refuses to wear spandex of be called invisible girl. matt shoots lasers from his eyes, cortex is like matter eating lad, jessamyn has wolverine like claws but is also like Diamond Lil, pb is like "the drummer" from the comic Planetary and vacapinta is a whisp of wind that no seens, but somehow manages to do things off panel/screen.

For some reason language hat appears as villain, smoking a pipe and laughing that stereotypical villain laugh and wearing hats of course. The pinksuperhero puts in an appearance as wanna be superhero sidekick.

I know I've had mefi dreams more than once, but the only one I really remember right now is the one where gingerbeer and I had traveled to go to jessamyn's wedding, and when we got to wherever it was, I still had to buy pants. Apparently, very expensive pants, since dream-gingerbeer told me that we'd been approved for a loan for the pants.

I used to have Metafilter (+/or MetaChat) dreams of all sorts (including one where I was snuggling with Quonsar — not exactly a sex dream, more like we were friendly "ex"es —exes? how do we write that?— or something). And one time I stopped coming by for a while after I started having MeFi-generated nightmares during some of the worst of our gender conflicts/conversations. (We've also had a lot of best-of in that area, don't get me wrong; I just realized I was getting too flinchy if I was having bad dreams, since I rarely suffer from nightmares).

But after all these years (which is longer even than the eight years I've been registered, since I was a daily lurker)... most things seems like we've kind of been through some form of it before, and I usually don't find myself becoming as emotionally enmeshed. I don't think of myself as jaded, it's more like comfortable and familiar, but not so much occupying the forefront of my consciousness that I have MeFi dreams anymore. Of course, now that I've said that, it's like asking for trouble! :)

Movie version of Sheltering Sky (novel by Paul Bowles) has one terrific scene. John Malkovich starts talking about one of his dreams and Debra Winger goes off on him. Other than that one scene the movie did not do much for me.

I dreamed about MetaFilter last night! I am not making this up, although as the morning drags on I'm fuzzier on the details. I dreamed that I made plans to go to two different meetups in one night, a small pizza get-together in the evening and then another meetup with a different group of people at midnight, and in the dream I was in TOTAL PANIC about whether I'd make it to both meetups. At the first one it seemed like everybody was ignoring me and then for some reason kmellis (whom you may remember under a different handle) started hitting on me, and at some point he turned into a girl, in fact it might have been ThePinkSuperhero but in the dream I couldn't remember her name, and I agreed to go to some restaurant together, just the two of us, but the "date" wasn't going well and we didn't have anything to talk about and we sort of tacitly agreed that it wasn't going well and we went our separate ways, and then I found myself wandering around through some sort of dimly-lit nighttime bazaar or fair, trying to find my way back to downtown where the meetup was supposed to be. Then I was wandering aimlessly around in the street in some city, probably New York, with a lot of skyscrapers but absolutely no traffic or people other than random straggler MeFites.

If I were making this up, I assure you I would have made it more interesting.

I even hate it in fiction.

Here's a pretty good one:
Under morphine, Billy had a dream of giraffes in a garden. The giraffes were following gravel paths, were pausing to munch sugar pears from treetops. Billy was a giraffe, too. He ate a pear. It was a hard one. It fought back against his grinding teeth. It snapped in juicy protest.

The giraffes accepted Billy as one of their own, as a harmless creature as preposterously specialized as themselves. Two approached him from opposite sides, leaned against him. They had long, muscular upper lips which they could shape like bells of bugles. They kissed him with these. They were female giraffes—cream and lemon yellow. They had horns like doorknobs. The knobs were covered with velvet.

Why?

I dreamed that all my favorites were piled up in a big vault where I could dive into them and feel them rolling over my body. Then I lifted two heaping fistfuls of them over my head and let them slowly spill through my fingers as I laughed and laughed...

I was awake at the time, so I don't know if that counts.

I have had dreams as a result of MetaFilter. Usually when someone wants to talk about the goings-on of the world, I have to say, "Yeah, I read about it on MetaFilter, and such-and-such and so on, and my views are this way, and I read some really interesting thoughts about it," and apparently (according to a consensus of the folks in my life) it has made me an insufferable know-it-all.

In my dreams, no one talks to me about world events anymore. Much like in my waking life.

Hearing about someone's dream is never interesting.

It totally depends on the person. I have a friend who quite often has the most wonderful dreams. The best one, I think, was one where he was interviewing David Lynch when Lynch asked him if he wanted to see his latest movie. My friend agreed, so Lynch took a DVD from his pocket and put it on. The main character in the film was a small piece of plastic bag that was laughing hysterically.

I got into an argument with someone (shocking!) about what now I cannot recall. I do remember holding a napkin and screaming "It's all right here" as the other person left the room.

The main thing I remember was drunkenly apologizing to Jessamyn about a memail I had sent to her and repeatedly telling her how awesome her job was, and that if people would just chill the hell out there would be a lot less Meta drama. And she had a totally cool pad.

Also no one recognized me becuase all I do is lurk and favorite.

I was drawn to MeFi because there are a huge number of very smart, engaged, and well informed people on this site, the content is great, and the mods keep the quality at a high level. One joy of the place is that although there are plenty of veterans here, and some people do consistently great zingers or posts, often there will be a fantastic comment or post from someone I didn't know about or notice before. For me, it would be a lesser place if I only zeroed in on the most favorited folks or only read what the "awesome" people post.

Really, the only thing about MetaFilter that consistently drives me crazy is that I can't find time to look at all the posts, links, and comments. I've learned, to my regret, to focus on a limited number of topics among the many covered here.

But I enjoyed your dream. And hope clutching your plate of beans didn't do in your dream clothing. It's a drag when your imaginary wardrobe has to be cleaned.

I've never dreamed about Metafilter, but, sometimes when I make latenight obnoxious drunken comments I manage to convince myself it was all a dream.

Funniest poster: Greg Nog (runner-up: robocop is bleeding)

Greg Nog is funny as hell. And The Whelk often gives me a good laugh as well. But the only time I laughed until I had tears streaming down my face was the dude who posted on AskMe wanting to know how to fashion a backpack carrier for his pregnant wife -- so he could carry her around on his back and she wouldn't have to walk. He seemed dead serious, and sincerely wanted to know how, which made it so absurdly hilarious to me. I can't explain it, really, I guess it just struck my particular funny bone. I literally still get teary-eyed thinking about it.

Also, if someone remembers what I'm talking about and can link to the thread, I would love to bookmark it (for those dismal hopeless moments -- who couldn't use a good chuckle?).

Thank you, Gator! The OP mentioning in the question that he'd rather not carry her (pregnant, with twins!) on his shoulders just sent me on another fit of giggles...

MetaFilter: Please do not stuff your pregnant wife in an adult-size babybjorn.

I've had at least one MeFi related dream. MeFi was an office and Mathowie was the boss (of course!). He was really pissed off that everyones work (posts) was substandard and kept firing employees. Really, it was quite distressing waiting for the axe to fall while desperately trying to find good things to post.

No joke: I dreamed that I posted a thread to AskMe, but it should have gone in MetaTalk, and then it turned out I had used my sister's sock puppet account (she doesn't have one) by mistake, but everything was okay because jessamyn commented in it, "Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!" Weird dream.

I had a dream. Crazy dream.
Anything I wanted to know, any place I needed to go

Hear my song. People won't you listen now? Sing along.
You don't know what you're missing now.
Any little song that you know
Everything that's small has to grow.
And it has to grow!

California sunlight, sweet Calcutta rain
Honolulu starbright - the song remains the same.

Sing out Hare Hare, dance the Hoochie Koo.
City lights are oh so bright, as we go sliding... sliding... sliding through.

Oh shit! I meant to post that in the heavy metal thread on the blue. Or maybe not. Is there a difference between "metal" and "heavy metal", anyway? I think I'll put my pants on and go to bed now.

dirtdirt: No one wants to hear what you dreamt about unless you dreamt about them.

I dream about friends and family all the time. I never tell them because my dreams are just so boring.
Me: "Hey John, I had a dream about you."
John: "Really? Cool! What about?"
Me: "We were in Target buying umbrellas."
John: "And?"
Me: "That's about it. We paid with cash."
John: "Oh."
Telling people that I've had dreams about them seems kinda pointless when their dream-existence inside my head is less interesting than their real lives.

You know you've spent too much fucking time on Mefi when just the power of suggestion of this thread and seeing Choire Sicha pop back up on AskMe (yay!) makes you have your very first Mefi-induced dream.

I woke up at 3 a.m. last night after a startling dream that turned into a nightmare. Choire, who was one of my all-time fave Mefites back in the day, randomly showed up at this house that looked very much like my late grandparents'. I was sleeping in it and it seemed to be mine even though in real life it isn't and never was (of course, typical as dreams go) and Choire showed up wanting to have a slumber party where we just chattered away all night about his engagement and wedding plans. I was super happy for him and then randomly my mother showed up in a nightgown (um) and mentioned there was another random cute guy hanging out in one of the other bedrooms but didn't offer an explanation. Then she started freaking out about how people were outside and scurried away when she went to the window to draw the curtains. I asked if she locked the door and she said "of course not, that doesn't matter" and then boom, unlocked door (danging chain and all) swings open and these stereotypical burglars clad in black turtlenecks and beanies come in. The head burglar, a woman, grinned and said she knew a secret and went towards a desk drawer in the living room and produced a gun we apparently kept there for protection, seemed she's cased the joint somehow beforehand. She had us all on our knees hostage-style and shivering, quivering, while Choire was in the other room where he'd fallen asleep. I think about the other random guy back there and hope he rescues us but of course it turns out he's in cahoots with the other burglars and comes out the back bedroom menacingly and I realize there's no hope. I also realize somehow (my dreams are always like this, I'll "know" things with no possibility I'm wrong, but things I couldn't possibly really know normally, it's weird, and then I just spend the dream full of dread for what's to come like a perpetual Cassandra, ugh) the head burglar woman is going to shoot Choire in front of us in his sleep to show us she means business. And that we probably will all be murdered after the ordeal. No hope. So I wake up!

The extra fucked up thing was while I was awake afterward in that, you know, gauzy not-totally-aware state, I was contemplating things people have said on Mefi about home invasions! Like, I think it was Forktine but I can't remember for sure, someone saying they'd get the family in the bedroom barricaded behind the bed and armed with a shotgun, let the burglars take whatever they wanted, but "heaven help them" if they decided to venture into the bedroom or something.

So in short: too.much.Mefi!!! Bad dreams. But, it was nice to wish Choire well in his marriage, I'll admit.

Power of suggestion indeed. Last night I dreamed that I was at some kind of stand-up comedy festival. I was looking through the schedule and I saw artw's name. And I was like, "Why is that name so familiar? Do I know that guy?"

I had my first dream about Metafilter a few days ago. I was on the blue, and saw a post about mother's blogs about their babies being more popular than father's blogs. There was a link to a mother's blog, hosted by blogger and it had an orange color scheme.
I didn't go to the mefi comments, I felt it would be a trainwreck.
Then I woke up.

I had a dream about Metafilter in 2001—or was it early 2002? In any case, I'd just discovered Metafilter after using Plastic.com for a while. Metafilter was obviously much better than Plastic, but MeFi memberships were closed to slow expansion. Every so often, Matt would allow a small number of new sign-ups, but, being in Melbourne, I was hampered by the timezone difference and never managed to snag one before they ran out. I felt like a hobo standing in the snow at Christmas, watching a happy family unwrap their presents through a gap in the curtains. I felt an acute sense of longing and frustration.

Anyway, around this time, I had a dream about a bathing pool, filled with aquamarine water and laughing boys. The boys had golden skin and wore blue trunks. They were beautiful, like Ganymede and Narcissus. I wanted, more than anything, to swim in the water and be like those boys. But I couldn't join them, because I didn't have a blue bathing suit. When I awoke, there was no doubt in my mind what this dream was about.

Around the same time, I also had a dream about Google, but in that dream, I was riding a Tron bike through the internet. That was cool.
