Ryland Sanders has passed away. April 2, 2011 12:24 PM   Subscribe

He hasn't been around too much lately, but longtime MeFites may wish to know that Ryland Sanders, aka RylandDotNet, passed away this morning is in hospice care (please read thread for details)

He'd been suffering from COPD for some time, but recently took a turn for the worse. Friends from another site who visited him yesterday report him as happy and unafraid.

Ryland created Says-It -- an outgrowth of his Church Sign Generator page, which has its own Snopes entry -- and God Hates Shrimp, and blogged at ABoyAndHisComputer.com and Tumblr.

He lived in Austin, was 43, and will be greatly missed.

He linked to one of my web projects back in the old days (old-ish, anyway. 1998 or 9) and we exchanged a few emails about it. Just by the amount of traffic his little link sent me I knew he was an internet celebrity, although I wasn't aware of his stuff. Then many years later, after I moved to Austin, I saw he had appeared in my 'users near you' list, and I meant to drop him a line to say, "hey remember that?" but I never did. Shit.

He showed me unsolicited kindness and encouragement at a time when I could use it. That's one clear definition of a good person.

Ryland is a good guy and I have great memories of him from MeFi, and all the other venues we hung out together in. The most recent update is that he is currently in ICU and his parents are working with the hospice, to try to take him home.

Ryland's got a great sense of humour and is one of the calmest individuals I know, calmer than mathowie too. I am sure if he ever gets a chance to read this thread, he'll have a nice laugh. Heck, this is the man who invited people to come say goodbye to him next week in Austin, knowing that his time was nearly up. He wants us to celebrate his life and not be sad at his eventual passing.

Here's to you Ryland, you're a gem of a person.

So, here's the latest update. We talked to Ryland's aunt on the phone at the hospital. Hospice has arrived. They are going to take Ryland off all life supportive measures: O2, medicines, etc, and make sure he is not in any kind of pain whatsoever. All we can do is wait, now, and hold him in our hearts.

We relayed to Ryland's aunt all the outpouring of love, respect, and affection that has been streaming his way. Told her how many friends he has all over the world who are thinking about him right now and wishing him a well and safe journey. She said she would make sure he knew just how loved he is by all of us. That he is lucid enough to understand and that it would make him very happy.

Ryland has no hope of recovery. His episode this morning (and the confusion in it's wake) was part of the first steps of him shuffling off this mortal coil. His rich life is near it's end. Keep him in your thoughts and give generously if you're able. Thank you.

Go in peace, Ryland. I still remember reading this from his blog -- wow -- in 2005. Was a vague memory, but certainly made an impact for me to remember it among the thousands of blog posts I've read since then.

Glad hospice is there. Death from an illness that causes one to feel like they're suffocating is one of the most terrifying ways to go, I'm told.

Cigarettes suck. They took my mom. They took my dad. Fuck you, Phillip Morris. Fuck you to hell.

Awful young to be tobacco-related. COPD/emphysema in your 40s is more likely alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency or another inherited disorder. (Cigarettes still stuck.)

Although Ryland was not an aviator, whenever someone passes, I always think of these passages from the poem "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee, Jr:

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Ryland's last words were written on a note to his family: "WTF?"

If I am lucid in my final moments, I am *SO* stealing that.

Farewell, Ryland.

I recently used his Jeopardy! clue screen generator for a silly little project. I really hope somebody keeps says-it.com going; it's far too cool to let disappear into the ether.

Thanks dreamattack for the update, for letting us know. Sad as it is.

So tragically funny and apropos to Ryland's sense of humor, his last words in netspeak shorthand.

My loving condolences to you, his friends and to his family.

Ryland's obituary, posted by an aunt on his facebook page a short time ago.

a legacy of life
by Ryland Sanders on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 7:18pm

Ryland Buford Sanders Jr was born December13,1967 in Austin Texas. He graduated from Burnet High School in 1986. After High School he attended ITT. Ryland found his future in computers.

Ryland lived an unassuming life but he touched so many lives. He left a legacy of love and caring that is just now being realized by his passing. Ryland left his family with tears but with an insight to a life lived quietly but profoundly. He exhibited courage facing what he knew was coming with the same grace he lived he his life. . There are not many people who can leave this world leaving a foot print that the rest of us can not fill.

In his last hours Ryland was surround by the people who loved him the most. He is survived by his beloved mother Alinda Hackney and his dad Charlie. He also leaves behind a sister Lisa and a brother Bruce. There are two nephews, a niece and one great niece. He is also survived by his aunts Sandra, Joy April, Diane and Phyllis and his uncle Fred. He will be missed by his great aunt Dolly. Ryland had numerous cousins and great cousins. Laura Turner and August Motloch were cousins who were like sister and brother in his youth. He had a close network of friends that were a big part of his life.

There will be a memorial service at 1:00 pm Sunday April 10th at McKinny Falls State Park.

The family wants to extend a special thanks to Hospice of Austin for all their help. We are also grateful to the nurses and staff at Seton hospital for making an unbearable situation as smooth as they did.
