How do you interpret all this? September 23, 2011 6:11 PM   Subscribe

The weirdo question from earlier this afternoon is still hanging around on the main ask page, if you're not logged in.

It's properly baleeted if you're logged in. So that's kind of strange.
More importantly, is just that little bit of cognitive dissonance enough to sever my connection to the real world?

posted by Devils Rancher at 6:50 PM on September 23, 2011

So why the change to the post/preview buttons?

Just updating things a little. They're a bit cleaner and easier to read. There's some subtle feedback when you mouse over so you subtly know you're mousing over.

Ah, I can see your reasoning.

I think the new button style might make them too different, so we should probably come up another way to do that.

I cannot imagine you will care about this, but based on Actual User Experience Research done at my companY! (who shall remain nameless, har har) I would advise that you make the "Post Comment" button inverse -- that is, light text on a dark background, and also bold the text -- to emphasize the one you want people to use the most.

Which here I suspect would be "Preview" on the first pass, and "Post Comment" once it has been previewed. I'd also move "Preview" to the left of "Post Comment" to make it more likely to be used, but I bet people will throw a hissy fit about that.

If we've gotten through the new button itchiness, can we now talk about the intersticial google ads within the body of Ask responses when you're not logged in? All these issues, I know, could be resolved by logging in all the time.
I've been giving them time, as I wanted to avoid the knee-jerky adverse reaction to change, but the aesthetic "ugh" response is still there, after two weeks. I understand that there may be logical financial reasons to put those ads in there, and thus wonder if there will be an evaluation of their real utility after a month or so.
In short, are those ads forever? And are there any plans to deploy them on the blue or elsewhere?

Also, not to back door discuss that question, but it really reminded me of the questions in the Michael Moorcock book "Breakfast in the Ruins" (I think that's the one).

You are brought into a room by a nazi soldier. You are shown a table with various items on it and told if you pick the correct one it may save your family. There is a dog's skull, a .45 bullet, a baby's rattle, a glass of milk, a Roman coin and a bowl of cherries. Which do you choose?

The above is my reconstruction of a poor memory of these questions and in no way should be construed as real Moorcock. That question on the other hand might be real Moorcock.

Sorry you don't like the ads. We don't currently have any plans to either remove them or add more ads in other places. There are technical solutions out there if you don't want to see ads, and you can always log in to see fewer ads. I personally like the logged-in aesthetic better too, but the ads are how we pay the bills.

Ditto, The non logged in look is hideous; I'd pony up the $5 just to get the logged in aesthetic. I wonder how many new members are shocked and dismayed by the change in the look once they sign up.

What is the theory for having a logged in/logged out difference like that anyways?

The only difference is the presence of ads. You can customize the look & feel a bit in your site preferences and change to the plain theme once you're a member, but the default view is the same for both members and non-members.

posted by wheelieman at 6:40 AM on September 24, 2011

Sorry about the confusion. There's no mouseover text. Hover is when you put your mouse cursor over the button. And in browsers that support it, the button will change slightly. The color will get a little darker and the border will get a little darker, that's all it does.

IE doesn't support it, so there won't be much to see there.
