Scheduled Maintenance Saturday December 15, 2011 2:15 PM   Subscribe

We're going to have some downtime for maintenance this Saturday night at 10pm Pacific Time.

We'll need to take the site offline a little longer than our usual maintenance. We plan to be offline for two hours and we'll keep everyone updated with any changes at status.metafilter.com.

MSNBC: The nation's productivity saw an unexpected and strange uptick late Saturday night. Economists attributed it to a surfeit of transnational lunar emanations in advance of the last winter solstice before THE END OF THE WORLD!

Newt Gingrich immediately went on record stating it was all the poor children finally getting to mop American school's floors.

Michelle Bachmann says it was all those gays finally giving up corrupting our youth and doing real work... like collecting farm subsidies.

One thing remains unclear, will this affect Kim Kardashian's plan to marry her best friend's pet koala.

Not ambitious enough. Tapas are really great.

A few years ago I was sitting in my studio apartment in the early evening when there was a knock on the door. It was an acquaintance of mine who sometimes worked as an assistant in my landlady's real estate business. This was the first time I had met her outside of her work.

"Hi," she said. "I'm going to take you out to eat."

"Okay, I'll grab my keys", I said.

"You don't need to, we'll take my car" she said. And after a moment "You'll have to drive though, because I'm drunk."

Not wanting to reflect on how she and her SUV arrived at my place, I took her keys and we started to drive. "Where are we going?" I asked. "We're going to F____ for tapas."

A minute or so later she pressed some buttons on the CD player and said "I have some music for you." It was a smooth acoustical Persian jazz, very low and sensual.

When we arrived at the restaurant there was a significant wait, so we walked down the street to a bar she knew to pass the time.

Now there is something with me and alcohol. I hate the taste of it, but I'm constantly aware that turning down a beer can be an unwelcome distraction in social situations. Because of this I've made a point to have a beer every once in a while to practice getting it down without puckering.

Still I have very little experience with alcohol. And that is how I came to nurse a single beer while she had a few, without me knowing that a woman her size shouldn't be standing after three beers in fifteen minutes.

In the middle of the second beer she leaned over toward me and said "I'm going to kiss you now." And did. This could have been awkward in that she was married but as A) I had never really considered my feelings about being an accessory to adultery and B) I was in the middle of a long dry spell and was really horny, I kissed her back.

We walked back up the street, stopping in a few alcoves to make out, and arrived at the restaurant just in time to get our table. I was getting a bit nervous about her increasingly drunken behavior and really hoped alcohol would not play a large part of dinner.

I was immediately disabused of this notion by the pitcher of Margaritas she ordered for the both of us. On the plus side she did order quite a nice selection of tapas and I had the naive hope that getting some food in her stomach might bring the situation back under control.

When the tapas arrived she decided she was going to sit in my lap and feed it to me.

I excused myself to the bathroom and once out of sight breathed a silent prayer to the gods that my cellphone was charged. I called the one of my friends who was best suited to answer "I have a deeply drunk woman I need to dissuade from molesting me as well as deliver safely home" questions. He wasn't home, but fortunately his mother was babysitting his kids and was a registered nurse.

"Get some coffee in her and then get her in the car", she said. "I guarantee you she'll be asleep within five minutes." I still send this woman Christmas cards.

There was one more moment of fun to be had while guiding her to the car, when she asked me if we were going to be having sex tonight. I said no. She said "So I'm not going to get to see your dick?" a little more loudly than I thought was strictly necessary. "No," I said "you're very beautiful and attractive but you're long past the point where you can consent. So no."

Sure enough after five minutes in the car she was sound asleep. I drove her back to my place and knocked on the door of my landlady. "Oh she does this every once in a while", she said. "Just leave her in the car and I'll wake her up in the morning."

I locked my door that night.

There actually wasn't much aftermath to all of this. The next time I saw her I gave her a big friendly hug and neither of us mentioned anything. I discussed the whole accessory-to-adultery issue with different friends and reached the decision that regardless of moral or ethical issues it was the kind of karma that I just didn't need.

And I discovered that F____ makes really good tapas.

I've gotten some intermittent "connection to server was reset" errors on various parts of the site this morning. Not sure if it's related to the server move, or if it's just me, or what.

so now I can tell newbies that I've been here since before the asterisk and it was better back then goddammit.

I'm feeling old enough to have been here before Obelix as well as Asterix

Never before have I been so happy to see an asterisk.

Cortex looks better with his hair fluffed up a bit.

Hammock chairs are brilliant. Anyone with a nice strong beam in their home should get one.

So cortex has both a sex chair and a fluffer? Damn boy.

I'll be honest- I put away the hammock chair every time I hear Matt might be stopping by our house, in an attempt to foil his plans to make the sex chair joke.

might be stopping by our house

Who's that at the door?

:(

My new repeating joke will involve Josh's ukulele collection. Every time I come over I'll hold one and bellow "I AM A GIANT!!! WHAT DOES THIS TINY GUITAR SOUND LIKE, MUCH SMALLER HUMAN?"

To be fair, Cortex is 12 inches tall.

I shall call him "wee cortex" from now on.

Now we know what happened to Jessamyn's star, it's been re-purposed. Cutbacks at the OK Corral.

Not sure if it's related to the server upgrade, I'm getting very sluggish pageloads and frequent connection timeouts this afternoon.
posted by crunchland at 11:38 AM on December 20, 2011

Me too, crunchland (though it's intermittent) and I'm also having trouble downloading the infodump data file from stuff.metafilter.com. It doesn't stop at the same place every time, but I can say for sure that when the site seems to stall in general, my download also stalls and then breaks.

Quattro.

(actually I'm not having any trouble. It just seemed like the right thing to say.)

Yeah, as mathowie mentioned upthread we're having our couple rocky days while we tweak things for the new servers. We're keeping an eye on things and adjusting where we can.

FishBike, you can grab a copy of the infodump on our static file server here. We're planning to move the infodump files to that server next time we update the infodump.

We've made one major-ish change to the webserver this afternoon while looking over the log files. We noticed a lot of errors from our gzip library in Apache, so we're no longer gzipping all pages. This means you'll have to pull down more data, but the server may (knock on wood) get more stable as we prevent those errors from happening.

So let us know here if you get more weird connection refused errors, and we'll watch it closely tomorrow when the traffic starts to peak again in the late morning.

Burhanistan: "It's like when I bought that Jaguar XK and it was totally fast and smooth for the first weekend, and then when I had to drive it to work on Monday it started sputtering and having all kinds of weird electrical glitches."

I'm not sure whether you're joking or not, but a friend of mine bought a fancy Audi, and it stopped dead four blocks from the showroom. Car's been resold for a while now, but the debate continues: since it was so convenient to call someone over from the showroom, was it actually better than if the car had broken down later/further away?
