We've had a Lego-based FPP every day this week. Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon or are our friends in Denmark making a concentrated media push around Christmastime?
For a moment, I thought this was a call-out for a Baader-Meinhof themed Lego series. Which would be very very wrong, but I would have to buy some....

Considering the Danes have a Christmastime tradition of using lit candles as ornaments on their trees, I think they're probably too busy with the nationwide conflagration to bother with guerrilla advertising.

it is certainly a mouthful; a shorter name might have more hope of penetrating the lexicon.
I'd say confirmation bias except there's a very good reason people keep posting about Lego and that's the fact that it's almost Christmas and lots of people here have been buying and/or reading about it?
Also, I really hope this usage of Baader-Meinhof doesn't catch on. I doubt folks here would be too thrilled if people started saying "umm, it's like a 9/11" for times when they kept leaping to incorrect conclusions or whatever.

Oh, God no. I posted a Lego FPP because I have an 8-year-old, it's nearing Christmas and all I hear is "Isn't this a cool set, Mama? Wouldn't that be fun to build? And look at this set, and this one, and this one." From morning until night. And he never wants to talk about gender roles because to him it's self-evident that mommies carry multitools, haul feed, paint barns and wrangle large animals, even if they won't ride (not-pink) ATVs.

Ironically, every time I think of Baader-Meinhof, I get the urge to attack Springer for their high journal prices. Then I realize that the RAF attacked a different Springer, and I feel confused. That's my version of the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon....

Yeah, especially because Lego is made somewhere in the middle between Stockholm and Baader, no, Meinhof. There must be some connection, I sense it. (Also there's something deep about something being a 'phenomenon' in Germany and a 'syndrome' in Stockholm. Must be the darkness here in Sweden...)

Oh, here is the appropriate spot for my mostly off-topic rant about Lego people colors. My son, who has brown skin, asked for some brown Lego people for Christmas. Turns out Lego only sells generic mini figures in yellow. For brown, I had to scour Amazon for old NBA Legos, who are mostly bald and have 5:00 shadows. Even Lando, the main black Lego dude, is hard to find. Grrr.

I askerd my cousin last year what she got for Christmas and she told me and added, "Oh! And Paul got me a case of D'yer Make'r." She and Paul are sort of drinky/foody types, and I though, man, what a great name for a craft beer. So I asked if I could have one, and she said, "A quesadilla? Sure! I'll get the maker!"

I was a child in the 60's and I really don't remember them being around. Had they started exporting them here?
My daughter never showed any interest either so I the only exposure I ever had to them was when my nephew visited from Japan. He had little packaged sets to build at the dinner table. I thought they were a pretty big waste of money, because once the rocket or car or whatever was assembled he didn't play with it--- he was only interested in the assembly process. Now that I come to think of it does anyone ever recycle their legos?

are you kidding me? I spent hundreds of hours in my youth building, disassembling, reassembling, inventing... I'd get a kit, build it, play with it, and within a couple of days have it stripped down to its component bricks for incorporation into my own creations.

Yeah, generally you get a new kit, build it according to the instructions, take it apart and maybe build one of the ideas on the box, then you add all the new pieces to your collection of bricks so you have that many more pieces with which to build your own models.

Just a reminder, Legoland California is open all week until New Years. The tree made of Lego bricks is a sight to be seen. If you don't take your children you are a terrible parent. Mention Metafilter at the ticket office or Southern California Vons stores and get 10% off admission.

I had bunch of Lego as a kid but also a bunch of Tyco, which were more or less compatible but not always perfect fits and also had some specialty pieces that were a non-starter, like the triangle and hex-bend pieces that let you make cooler architectural variations but didn't interlock with actual Lego in a useful way.

Bluedaisy - you can customize the minifig pieces with vinyl dye and home-made decals. Might be a fun project, doesn't look too difficult, and will probably be cheaper than buying rare collectible minifigs.

bluedaisy, I thought I remember seeing a Star Wars set (or more than one?) with the Jedi played by Samuel L Jackson, if you're still looking for Lego of color. Here we go: Mace Windu Starfighter. (I'm not big on SW Lego, but found the idea of Samuel L. Jackson as a Lego sort of hilarious. I also find the idea of Lego Helena Bonham Carter amusing.)

This page is composed almost entirely of OR backed up with pseudoscientific psych-speak. If it has been documented in any notable source (which excludes damninteresting.com, thank you), I have been unable to find it. An earlier AfD seemed to fail mostly on the basis that the original nominator was unregistered and initially bungled the application. At the very least, complete the merge into synchronicity, which seems to be synonymous but actually has legitimate documentation

Yeah, you'd think. You can do this online too. It's called pick-a-brick. But the only heads with faces are yellow. They don't have brown hands either, all yellow.
I ended up getting a couple of brown head shapes without a face. How awful is that?
This is not a new issue. Lego hears about this all of the time (you can google for it), despite their protests that yellow is "race-neutral." The only time right now that they make different tones for people is when the characters are representing actual people (like the NBA - not MBA! - players).

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that, and I guess my favorable opinion of the company just made me assume the better of them. It's pretty messed up that your little kid can't the pieces he wants without buying a whole set for a single head or dying the latex.

"our friends in Denmark" actually includes one of my ex-girlfriends, who from her reaction on Facebook to the Web's reaction to the Lego Friends announcement was definitely not aware of any social media astroturfing.

There is a kid in my son's preschool who has a basement of Lego models up on shelves as sort of a trophy case of the different Lego sets he has built. Each Lego kit is a one-time project; build it and then shelve it, kind of like model airplanes. So wrong.

addelburgh, I bought that set last Father's Day and spent the day building it with my son. It's one of the neatest sets I've ever seen and we had a blast building it. Amazingly detailed. I'm really hoping my wife takes the 329095825 hints I've dropped and buys another one of those sets for my son and I for Christmas. I'm thinking maybe the fire station.

So the Master Builder kit got here today, and it's plain evidence that Lego itself actively discourages this. There are instructions for three different models, showcasing different techniques (or "techniques" - this is pretty obviously the starter set.) But there are only enough pieces to build one at a time. You're clearly expected to build one, tear it down, build the next, etc. (Which I am doing - I am happy to just snap a few pics of the finished models as mementos.)
The real challenge will be not running to Target and dropping a bunch of cash on more models this afternoon.

Pretty much all the Lego Creator stuff is 3-in-1 as well.
