Swiper No Swiping! April 20, 2012 4:27 AM   Subscribe

Can't swipe to favorite anymore. Did y'all disable that function? Or is it on my end?

Running Android OS EC-09 on a Samsung Continuum, so build SCHI400-EC09 using the built in Browser version 2.2.2. If it matters, I'm also using GO Launcher.

Isn't there a link somewhere in one of pb's comments that you have to click in order to enable this? Did you try clicking that again?

Holy shit, i had no idea that existed.

Can I tag on to this question and ask what we can do to make quoting less of a pain in the ass on the iphone version?

If you do a select all and then try to use the I button to italicize your selection, often the copy/paste/etc pop-up is floating right over the formatting buttons. I don't know what the answer is, but I imagine it's moving those buttons further away from the comment box?

Yeah, I have had to go hunting for that comment a few times to re-enable "Swipe to Favorite". Is it possible we could make it an official setting somewhere? I also agree with empath about the copy/paste pop-up problem. Maybe put the formatting buttons in a vertical column to the left or right of the input box?

I'd help take care of this pony.

Though I've had some luck lately with clicking the I button when the text box is empty, then clicking so the cursor stays in the brackets when the paste option pops up. Doesn't always work, though, and something easier would be awesome,

Luckily here is a situation when a 3 year old Nokia (touchscreen by tiny stylus) seems to manage all of Metafilter's little foibles so very well. I just hope it lasts since nothing new will emerge anytime soon *doleful sigh*

Yeah, we can discuss making swipe to favorite a permanent part of the mobile version.

Can I tag on to this question and ask what we can do to make quoting less of a pain in the ass on the iphone version?

We're bumping up against the limitations of such a small screen. The current textarea and buttons are sized so that everything is on screen when you're zoomed in and writing text there. If we move the buttons farther away, or off to the side, we'd need to make the textarea smaller. So while I hear you, I don't think it's worth sacrificing more space in the textarea to solve this one issue.

Instead of using the I button, maybe you could type out <i> at the beginning and </i> at the end of the pasted text. We provide those extended characters in the toolbar so that you don't need to switch keyboards to find < and > and /. It's an extra six taps. So it's not as easy as one click, but there are going to be trade-offs in the smaller space of the iPhone.

Another option re: quoting. Hit the I button first and then tap and hold to position the cursor inside the em tags to paste.

Seriously what am I doing wrong? Is my ipad infested with gnomes? I got the page that says "yay you have activated this on your device" but the page appears to have lied to me. I am swiping with my actual finger and not with my nostril or something.

i hope nostril swiping is not required tbh

It works fine on an iPad. I just tested to verify. I'm not sure what you're doing wrong, elizardbits, but it is working on the iPad. Swiping just involves putting your finger on the left side of the comments and swiping straight across the text to the right.

One thought is that once you enable the test, you'll need to reload any page you already had loaded. For example, you can't enable the test and then go back to a tab you already have loaded to try it out. You'll need to reload any pages to get the swipe code after you enable the test.

I have read somewhere that this is as yet contextual, meaning "action by hand = result on screen" has not yet been standardized across various varieties of touchscreens and OS and companies, yes?

God damn it. I love it when the touch keyboard disappears under my finger and the Post Comment button is right where the letter I was going to tap. -_-

Anyway, what I wad going to say was, I don't know how much of this is my fault, but using Dolphin Browser on an HTC Thunderbolt, it's not really true that every button is displayed for me. The Link button is off the screen by default, & it's usually impossible to move the screen to get it to appear, because I have Dolphin's swipe-to-get-additional-menus thing enabled.

Possible, but more information required. I think this only works on the mobile site and iPad doesn't default to that version?
posted by dg at 4:09 PM on April 22, 2012

This is really cool! But I think I found a problem. It appears that swiping in any direction triggers the popup window, at least on my iPad 2. Sometimes I drag my finger up the glass to scroll the content slowly. When I drag my finger for long enough, I'm asked if I want to mark a favorite comment. Any way of addressing that?
posted by emelenjr at 8:27 PM on April 22, 2012

Any way of addressing that?

This is the first feedback we've heard about accidentally triggering the swipe while scrolling. This is something we've been worried about and why swipe to favorite is a test rather than implemented by default.

People are going to have different ways of scrolling—you probably have some side motion going while you scroll up and down. I don't think there's any way for us to adapt to everyone's different ways of doing things. If it turns out that accidental swiping is a widespread problem, we probably won't implement it.
posted by pb (staff) at 8:33 PM on April 22, 2012

Huh. I reproduced the vertical swipe favorite a bunch of times last night, but i can't get it to happen today. Maybe it's not a bug after all.
posted by emelenjr at 8:46 AM on April 23, 2012

By "reload a page" do you just mean press the refresh button? I tried that and it had no effect. I just clicked the activate link and it's not working on my iPhone, although it works fine on my iPad.
posted by J. Wilson at 10:42 PM on May 9, 2012

Yeah, a standard refresh should do it. But really, just try going into any thread. If you have the swipe test cookie set, you should get the ability to swipe to favorite. Just make sure you're logged in and that you have Mobile Safari set to accept cookies.
