All of a sudden I am seeing some odd symbols (associated with some Java tomfoolery)? Did a new pony ride into town? Are we in the Matrix?

Need to fix a typo? Edit
Other [4/4]: «≡·

and «≡»

They seem to do stuff? Did I just find a sweet spot where new things are being tested, or rolled out?

The standard answer to these sorts of questions is another question:

Are you using any Greasemonkey scripts?
posted by carsonb at 3:45 AM on December 17, 2012

Are you talking about the [4/4], etc? Because that's a Greasemonkey script which you must have installed. Maybe you did that but forgot about it?
posted by taz (staff) at 3:45 AM on December 17, 2012

Opera, IE, FF Chrome (with std GM scripts) all seem fine on my end.
posted by lampshade at 3:48 AM on December 17, 2012

This is the one, I think.

Watch out for the vase! Put some cookies in your pocket, you'll be hungry later!

Aha! That's right! I installed a GreaseMonkey script last night, forgot (as is usual) and somehow it didn't represent earlier for some reason.

Thanks everyone!

I will now sit in the corner with my shame.

and your cookies.

I have no cookies.
Is there a script that will deliver cookies?
Or wine. I will accept wine. And cookies. Or Wine Gums.
Or Shame Wine Gums.

[More seriously: it doesn't seem to show up on Recent Activity, which is where I got confused with the not seeing. My first MeTa is a panic. Typical.]

I just realised what a stupid statement that is on the Internet, in a thread about java and scripts.

My shame crowds me out.

I think what my client means to say is that moderation on MetaFilter is COMPLETELY out of hand. Y'all might as well change your names to mathmao-y, p(ol)b(ot), skelecortex, and jessameinkampf, and then add civilization to the list of things MetaFilter doesn't do well.

I'd heard the term 'wine gum' before but didn't know what it meant. And a quick trip to Wikipedia somehow just went from wine gums (Swedish Fish are a variant) to a recipe on how to make Wine Jelly.

And then to the quote, "Lips that touch wine jelly. Shall never touch mine, Nelly!"
posted by sciencegeek at 5:15 AM on December 17, 2012

gah. This thread. First it made me want cookies, and now it's making me want wine. And I don't don't have either. I'm a sad panzer.

Poor taz. Someone make her a luscious, homemade pie with only the freshest ingredients. Or thick, applewood smoked bacon.

If you make a pie using only bacon, it's not a pie; it's a pile of bacon. Let's show some culinary exactitude, people!

If anyone has any rejected piles of non-pie bacon, feel free to send them my way.

Have some madeira, m'dear
You really have nothing to fear
I'm not trying to tempt you, that wouldn't be right
You shouldn't drink spirits at this time of night
Have some madeira, m'dear
It's really much nicer than beer
I don't care for sherry, one cannot drink stout
And port is a wine I can well do without
It's simply a case of chacun a son gout
Have some madeira, m'dear

Oh, those symbols. Yeah, those are the first of the glyphs that signify the - actually, I'm gonna go ahead and let you be surprised.

I'll say this though: If you want to indulge in wine and/or cookies, now would be the time. If not now, then very soon.

You've just stumbled on one of the lesser-known mathematical symbols. It goes like this:

!= equal
= equal
≡ equal as hell (it is equals with a racing stripe)

≡ equal as hell (it is equals with a racing stripe)

But if you actually want your equality to go faster, you need the aerodynamic styling of ≅.
