I think I heard it explained in Ask MeFi as plain bread not toasted, with butter, then sprinkles (an entire canister of it?) is dumped on top to stick to the butter, so there's no butter showing, and then the whole thing is supposed to taste kind of like a donut, as a dessert.

I was in Belgium last year and went into a supermarket and did see a giant section of one aisle dedicated to bread sprinkles. It was glorious, though I never got to partake.

what the deal is with the Dutch putting lots of tiny candies on a piece of bread

The sprinkles are just something you put on your sandwich. Typically, you have it for breakfast or lunch. There's different varieties, the most common is hagelslag which is chocolate (dark, white, milk or any combination thereof), but there's aniseed and fruit-flavoured sprinkles as well.

Then there's beschuit met muisjes, also in one of the pics of the netherlands option (with the pink and white sprinkles), which traditionally is eaten to celebrate the birth of a child, but also whenever just because you feel like it. (BTW beschuit is awesome, particularly slathered in Nutella!)

I remember that in some kids' houses the rule was that you had to first eat a sandwich with something healthy like cheese or some kind of meat, before you'd be allowed to indulge in the sweetness of sprinkles.

My goodness, this is fantastic. I had no idea I needed this in my life, but apparently I did. Many of the options are obviously related to MeFi culture (and the tumblr memes! hilarious -- that could have been its own joke by itself) and it's great to be able to see those. I love the sandwiches option. That's so unexpected and yet so appropriate, along with the invertebrates and diagrams. I know the Netherlands is because of goodnewsfortheinsane and that is a wonderful option too, along with jessamyn's Vermont (both have such lovely scenes). Thank you for the variety of choices, and for working on this and sharing it with us!

And I know this has been said by others in previous years, but I still very much appreciate the continuing tradition of cool/upbeat MeFi April Fools' Day jokes -- all of the recent ones in memory have been creative, fun, enjoyably silly/delightful, very much tongue-in-cheek, and most importantly, never mean-spirited. First I checked the URL (twice), then I wondered if I had malware (I'm on a phone so decided no), then I wondered if mefi had been hacked (to do that? No). Then I asked my husband in a suspicious voice "is today April the first?". Ahh, all questions answered.

tho 'tis true not all the pics there would have the right attribution - which CC license do we need to use? I see "attribution" mentioned but there are several license types with that.

malibustacey9999, apparently its origins are a mystery, and all we can know for sure is that a lot of people like to erect this statue in a lot of places, and a lot of other people like to vandalize, wreck, burn, smash, dismantle, move, damage, kidnap, and frolic naked with it. And thus you are destined to sleep nevermore.

Mr.Yuck, 'kitties' may be the default, but the drop-down selector in the upper left lets you choose 'doggies'! (Not to mention 'ponies') I'm more concerned about a lack of a 'bunnies' option. That spin-off site doesn't have a monopoly... do they?
posted by oneswellfoop at 2:35 AM on April 1, 2013

fraula, I don't think we knew about that! Or else it asploded our brains when we tried to figure out which flavor to put this one into: butts, bikes, or kittehs? (But, yeah, we were looking at CC license or other copyright-free sources, specifically.)

Wait, you don't defecate in your house? Does that mean you still have an outhouse?

Also, I haven't met a dog yet who never pisses or shits inside. Usually right on the carpet. At least a cat usually does it in a litterbox.

And when was the last time you saw a cat eat cat poop? Or dog poop? Or any kind of poop. Look, dogs love to eat poop. And then they like to lick your face and or their own genitals in varying orders.

Come to think of it I've never seen a cat roll around in shit or some incredibly stinky delicacy like garbage or rotting piles of sea kelp or manure like some dogs love to do.

I don't know where you're getting this crazy idea that dogs are any less nasty than cats. If anything they're much more intentionally "nasty" creatures who revel in being perverted, filthy beasts that'll roll happily in the fermented guts of a goat if given half a chance.

So....

We showed my kids Monsters Inc., over a month ago. Since then, my daughter has insisted on calling me "Kitty," which is what the little girl in the movie calls John Goodman's character. She draws pictures of me at school with blue fur, horns and a spiked tail. She wants to be called "Boo." I get greeted at the door each night with, "Kitty's home! Welcome home, Kitty!"

This is one of those affectations that's amusing and cute the first time. The tenth time, somewhat less so. We're now in the fifth week and I'm ready to do ANYTHING to get her to stop. I mean for heaven's sake, she calls me Kitty in public. It's embarrassing. So the arguments have started.

"Kitty!"
"Daddy."
"Kitty!"
"Sweetheart, that's very rude. Call me Daddy."
"I'm not going to stop calling you Kitty, Kitty. You're my pretty Kitty."
"Cut it out!"
"Kitty! I love you Kitty!"

And you want to really let loose and yell at her, but then she gives you That Look and you realize that she's only five years old and really a very sweet and mostly obedient child when she's not being stubborn and infuriating and yelling at her would be like kicking a...

...kitten.

I love the new layout. And I wanna keep it.

But I think I'll keep my daughter off the site today. :)

I call my son Boo with some (ir)regularity. He doesn't really talk yet, and I'm the only one who calls him this, so I have no idea what will come of it. Then again, we also call him Bear. I'm rather looking forward to the day he starts talking, to see what he'll say to all the crazy things we say to him.

Metafilter. Huh? Fuck. They must have put up a new interface for mobile devices. I'll have to figure out how to turn that off later. Not bad looking though. MetaFiltrest? I wonder if the "ST" stands for something. I'll have to check Metatalk later today. You know, that is a lot of posts about cats. I was seriously dreading sites pouncing me with is this real or fake "HAH GOTCHA" type stuff today.

I'm pretty much immune to that stuff at this point, though Google Analytics managed to break my heart a little last night when they rolled out their April Fools joke: 41 visitors suddenly looking at your site...from the International Space Station! The geopip for which moves along the path of its orbit, which is clever and all.

But 41 visitors is an awful lot to suddenly show up for e.g. a no-name webcomic about star trek. And the ISS would be basically the dream demographic to suddenly take an interest in said webcomic, given the theme. And so it was a quick little arc of "what...WHAT...oh motherfucker, Google..." Devastating. So I changed the thesis of the strip to be about fish instead.

I remember when I met one of the Pinterest people at a SXSW thing. He was a nice guy generally and we were doing the "Oh what do you do?" chitchat. I said I helped run MetaFilter and he said he helped run Pinterest. He got this look on his face and then started teasing me (negging me?) about how old school (and old fashioned) the place was. I said yeah it was dated but we had a nice community of really sharp folks and that was basically our goal state and it was nice to just BE THERE and not be striving for VC or being someplace else. And I'm glad people like the joke and I'm also glad that at the funny little proof of concept that you can basically turn MetaFilter into Pinterest with some CSS, but I don't think the reverse is true at all.

mathowie: "I tracked them by building a list of URLs on flickr, but then thought about how to list them all, and we thought about a tiny photo credit line somewhere, but the whole joke is a visual one that plays on looking exactly like pinterest so we made the executive decision that a one day joke wasn't worth tweaking the display to spoil the joke."

What kind of bread? I think I see pickles on some, what kind of pickles are those? Is that a bratwurst? Italian Sausage? Sabrett's hot sausage? I wanted to say that adding attribution as a top link in the white bar seemed like a weird addition and didn't fit on smaller screens. We could have linked images to their source on flickr, but that would have been confusing to users. Adding a credit line below would have distracted from the parody of Pinterest. Like I said, it's just a one-day joke and I know attribution is important but it seemed to get in the way to showing the joke in the simplest way possible.

(Oh I forgot to add the tumblr background images were found on Flickr by searching for hipstamatic tagged photos)

My take on the attribution thing is this:

1. We ended up in sub-optimal place—lack of clearly stated attributions—as a result of some loosey-goosey decision-making driven mostly by enthusiasm for an idea overrunning us being super careful about how we did it. On account of not making a point of gathering and archiving all the source links, we're kind of boned there: we don't have the links sitting around to set up attribution. With a time machine we'd go back and change that. Without it, we can't realistically rebuild that attribution manifest before the end of the day.

2. With that said, the April Fools thing is a by-design very short-lived one-day joke, so the no-attribution bummer is a bummer but not a pernicious one. This isn't the vanguard of some new attribution policy or image-rehosting scheme on Metafilter; there's no meaningful issue of precedent since this isn't step one of an ongoing process on the site; and if anything I think this is a good reminder to us that even when we're enthusiastically goofing on something we need to take the care to build in the time and effort for attributional niceties just to make the point that we have so no one ends up feeling weird.

So, I feel like it's (a) lesson learned and good reminder to take more care with this stuff but also (b) short-lived, no-stakes goofery that feels more like a gaucherie than actual damage done and isn't really practically fixable in this case in any case.

I, for one, am totally opposed. It doesn't seem dignified.

We are discussing serious issues here, and I don't think this is appropriate.

Plus, the graphics would look better with little puffy clouds.

Little puffy clouds.

I think the new layout admirably corrects one of the major defects of Metafilter; that so many posts and comments are delivered outside-the-box. By organizing posts in a strict rectilinear fashion, with rows and columns, Metafilter is doing the valuable service of squashing these round pegs into appropriately sized square holes.

Plus, kittens!

We sailed into the night, she and I, on a small sail ship, into the night, riding the waves, she and I, across the sea. Down in the galley, we made cocoa, and we drank it on deck, watching the waves, feeling the sea, seeing the Moon, its chocolate breath reaching down inside us.

"Do you love me?" she said.

"Of course," I replied.

And the dolphins swam around the boat, with iridescent lights from the ocean giving a glow to her face, a beautiful face, a little warm from cocoa, and from love.

A Rabbi, a Priest, and a Buddhist Monk walk into a bar on April Fools Day.

The Rabbi says, "I'll take a Manischewitz, because today is a crazy day!"

The Priest orders a whiskey. "On this day, of all days, it's good to drink whiskey!"

Then the Buddhist orders a drink.

Have you ever noticed that April Fools usually follows pretty close to Easter? Jesus gets crucified on the cross, a horrible fate, and he apparently dies (which is not unreasonable, given the horrible nature of crucifiction.) Some days after apparently being dead he returns. April Fools!

One time on Facebook I spent two minutes rubbernecking the slow-motion trainwreck that is the current state of affairs for this kid who was a total prick to me in 4th grade, and then for like 6 months afterwards my Chrome launch page Facebook thumbnail was his leering face. I wonder if this will be like that.

I meant the images with the MeFi-specific captions on. Are those anywhere?

We don't have credits for that set, but the joke lives on here for the time being.

Ok, I give up. I found the first mention of "butt elephant" on this site, but can't seem to find the first reference of "butts lol". Help!!

The site search finds this from July 2005, a reference to the website listed in Optimus Chyme's profile, and then this example from October 2005.

Oh, thank you, stebulus! I thought it was this one, glad to be set straight, so to speak.
