How in God's name did you find that?

What the heck does "fime" mean?

I was looking for a graphic I think I saw linked at MeFi, the black nose of a brown cow with funky little horns nearly filling the frame while it's black tongue is out in the middle of slurping the camera. I tried main google with site:metafilter.com jpg and that was the top return. I guess I was feeling lucky.

Moving that search over to the images area, with jpg or gif, is enlightening...

Also interesting is that even the light version of google's naughty-filter stomps all over the search results, killing more than 75% of the results.

Anybody got a link for that cow picture? A green field with some trees in the far background was visible around the cow's head. Please share if you do. It's a classic.

Hah! It becomes completely iconic if you highlight the text. Awesome.

Is there a script for making ASCII images like these? I'd love to see it...

the web ap that makes those was all the rage around here either in december or january. It was posted to the front page and everyone left links in the comments to what they made with it. I dug through the archives a bit but couldn't find it.

This seems to be the website in question. Can't find a FiMe thread.

(Also, you can't seem to dump the appropriate HTML into comment boxes, otherwise you'd be treated to a lovely, witty, image-to-Cabal-jargon picture. Sorry to disappoint.)

Ah. Here's the thread.

Oddly enough, that page is also the top return for mefimefimefimefimefimefimefimefimefimefimefimefimefimefi...

I have a friend who had one of the first programs to do this. It's called MosAscii. It has a lot more options and looks like it renders the image a little better.

It is shareware and only $8. Just don't steal it, blacklisted license numbers get reported home. If someone can give me a link to that original jpeg I'll run it through the program to see what it comes out with.

249 seconds? That seems a little long. It would make more sense if it were doing some of the shading by using characters of varying densities, but it's really just outputting a bitmap in a strange format, hardly any processing involved.

yeah, 249 seconds is a long time, but I'm guessing that at the time that he had it converted, all of metafilter was converting their pictures as well :) That server was getting hammered.

Any leads on that photo? I've still got my fingers crossed.
