Unplanned Server Outage May 4, 2018 5:22 PM   Subscribe

The site had an outage today for about 6 hours. It wasn't planned and I'm sorry that it happened.

What happened was more or less this:
  • A hard drive failed on the SQL server. (The backups drive)
  • This was not immediately obvious, because by all monitoring we had going, the SQL server was chugging along fine. In actuality, it was trying to write to a broken drive and doing that rather than responding to SQL queries.
  • I fixed the SQL server
  • It takes a while to get up and running properly because rebuilding the indices takes a long time. It takes hours if people are trying to access the site, so I kept the site offline for that time.
  • While the server was trying to load stuff into memory, it was also trying to do the backup that failed before, so was unhelpfully doing two resource-intensive tasks at once.
So again, sorry, and please say if after the outage, things still aren't working. Expect the site to be sluggish for another little bit as things get loaded into memory, and then hopefully all back to normal.

The most nerve-wracking thing, by the way, was that a storm hit at the same time, and the lights kept flickering. Then I got texts that the power was out in other parts of Waterloo. I was really scared that I was going to lose power somewhere in the middle of all of this.

Also, in a comedy of errors, the status blog to which the site's error page points is as several people rightly pointed out not actually up at the moment.

Which is entirely my bad; pb had run the old one for years, and kept it up nominally for us after he left, but stuff was expiring on the domain forwarding there and when he checked in with me recently to see whether to renew it or let us take over the whole thing, I opted for the latter. Which makes the most sense in the long run, but I had rainy-day'd actually getting it done, on the reasoning that, y'know, we don't expect any downtime soon.

Pretty sure there's a cognitive bias describing that.

Anyway, we'll get that fixed up shortly.

Ironically, the one thing I had planned out to do this afternoon was to write a (farm)work-related Ask.Me so I am officially the only person in the history of the universe *not* paid by metafilter who was less productive when the site went down.

Thanks for getting it back. Well done!

Yeah, things will still be eaaaaasing back up to speed for a while, so don't be surprised at some ongoing sluggishness the next while.

We bring down the DB server basically never when we can help it because unlike an Apache reboot, which usually takes all of two minutes and don't need any real spooling up after, the SQL Server setup has a lot of startup involved in getting everything loaded into memory to support the normal level of load on the site. Once's it's up and humming it does good for months at a time.

Normally we'd only bring it down for maintenance, and do it in wee hours on a weekend when traffic is already low, but an unlucky cascade of hardware failures forced the issue this time.

Chat runs on a different server and different database, but may have been unavailable through the web interface (I didn't check) after I blocked everything but my IP at the firewall level – I did that to get things up again with less load before opening the floodgates, not to have the site all to myself. It's lonely and echoey without the little (number) appearing next to page titles.

"THIS IS SO ANNOYING"
(If it makes it funny: I translated - the child was speaking German)

That would be hilarious in either language, and I'm sure the child knows the German word that describes that situation. ;D

Frimblespielverlust? Frimblenervtgefühl?

Actually wondering: what’s current 3jahralt for “annoying”?

I had a question I wanted to ask; it figures that the one time I would beat my lethargy to actually post something, the site goes down.

Thanks for getting the site back up. :)

> metachat.org

I probably signed up there at a bad time but I never got my confirmation email. Because of that I kind of figured that they were winding down site operations or something and weren't accepting new members because of that.

I mean, I'd be happy if it turned out not to be the case. But I didn't see a reason to make a fuss, so I never bothered to ask anymore about it. And then I just forgot.

Psht, what kind of downtime is six hours? Why, in my day, downtimes were long enough that we could call our mothers, write a novel, help a stranger and solve a crime.

frimble: The other factor here was that I was at home alone with a three-year-old while this was going on.

Nothing like a three-year-old for turning the server recovery difficulty level up to 11.

And it only took you 6 hours get everything back up?! Either your 3 y.o. is preternaturally calm or your tech deity status has just risen above Mt. Olympus. In either case, color me awed.

When I woke up to it this morning, I assumed Metafilter had finally made it onto the Great Firewall exclusion list.

So hooray! And stop talking about [redacted] and [redacted] OK?

edited to not by my own idiocy get Metafilter onto the Great Firewall exclusion list... duh.

"I was actually relieved when I got home and Metafilter was still down - the IT guy didn't just block Metafilter on the work network."

Ha! My thoughts exactly. Combine that with the fact that I was in the process of writing a book-length comment at the same time my boss called an all-hands meeting on Monday, and I was sure they found out how much time I spend here.

Admittedly, it was rough hours when I couldn't post or read in the Avengers: Infinity War.

Tried that "outdoors" thing. It's not bad! Tried to mix it with the "talk to real human beings" thing and was considerably less successful.

Luckily Netflix didn't abandon me.

Pendragon: the GREAT METAFILTER SHUTDOWN of 2018

Remember the Massacre of Bowling Green, Blue, Grey, Purple and so on.

Brandon Blatcher: Tried that "outdoors" thing. It's not bad!

Nah. The resolution is pretty good, but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.

Of course, this is all cortex's fault; I move we vote him off the boat.

It should be back to normal now – there was a scraping bot not following our robots.txt and grabbing many user activity pages per second. Which is something that happens on a regular basis, but where I check out each one manually, because it would be bad to, e.g. block Google (which is constantly crawling MeFi) from grabbing pages.

Not calm at all. Very annoyed that I was working (and understandably so). Normally, I work when the child is sleeping because, well, I had toys thrown at me and had to talk the child out of destroying things, because I had to split my attention and couldn’t focus on them.

I never noticed that Metafilter was down. I was at work and I always keep the political megathread open. I read snatches of it during the waits for Photoshop to render pages. Since I never got near the end of the thread, I never updated the page. It remained cached. and I never noticed the server was down.

Maybe the politics megathread needs an "unplanned shutdown" for a couple of hours every day so that people can catch up.

Or an extra $5 if you want to post to it...

It's so rare now that we have MeFi outages that when it did go went down, keeping in mind the several JRUN errors of old, I was inspired to compose a tiny ditty, sung to the tune of the Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron"...

I saw -400 on a website and my heart stood still
JRUN RUN RUN RUN
JRUN RUN RUN

The error message told me that it was fatal
JRUN RUN RUN RUN
JRUN RUN RUN.

Yeah, it caught my eye
Shook m’head and said, “Why oh why?”
Waited forever for it to come back 0
JRUN RUN RUN RUN
JRUN RUN RUN.

I have feelings about this as a site reliability engineer. (Hours to start up? *shudder*)

One way we've handled high availability for databases is to have read replicas or database clusters; writes go to the main one, and changes get propagated to the others. Backups and other batch processes can hit the others. In case of issues, you can promote one of the others.

I hate writing with inexact terminology but I have no time right now to write this properly...

That’s a totally fair thing to bring up and something that’s been in the back of my mind for a bit, especially as it fixes a few other problems for me.

The main restricting factor there is the number of work hours in a week. It’s been on my plate as would-be-nice for ages, but those are the things that end up sacrificed to need-to-do when it comes to allocating hours in a week.
