MetaFilter has won a Bloggie for "best group or community weblog". And mathowie must be happy that Kottke won his lifetime achievement award.

That will teach me for searching to make sure that this had not been posted already - you beat me by a few minutes!

Congrats to mathowie for the award, maybe he can spend the $20.03 on some more RAM for the server or something ;-)

Who the hell is this kottke guy anyway? I simply do not understand the adoration that follows him everywhere. I must be missing something. Whatever.

I feel I contributed, in my own way, to our overall loss.

yeah, we kicked Fark's ass
That's something to be proud of, right?

MetaFilter -- Better Than Fark

it's like, "nicer than Dick Cheney".

loobylu wins best design...? sure her drawings are adorable but her actual layouts are like brown paper bags... pretty utilitarian, not much effort.

oh well, i have to admit i have a negative attitude towards web site awards that mimic real life awards. they seem so silly and i end up feeling somewhat embarrassed for everyone involved.

So Fark won "Best Weblog About Politics"? Jesus.

Oh well, at least Matt got $20.03 out of the deal.

...and a book on blogging!

Given that Metafilter is a community website (admittedly largely aided by Matt's guiding hand), I demand that the Andrew Jackson be split among all 17,000 members.

I agree. But Matt should keep the 3 cents as bonus. he's the site's creator after all

And yet, I dunno, something in me tells me a blogging-for-beginners manual is perhaps not the most desirable prize after a year's hard blogging.

Matteo - you're all heart!

Industry or professional awards come to mind. Web awards just seem more trivial than others. There's something desperate about them if you don't consider internet hobbies to be on par with "real life" endeavors. Besides that the winners are usually nowhere near as interesting as the sites that most people don't know about. High traffic is almost never synonymous with high quality.

oscars, grammys, yadda...

my take: it's fun, not to be taken too seriously.

As the presenter, I tried to pocket the check since Matt wasn't present to collect. I was going to share. really.

I heard rumors that they were rigged, but never saw any evidence. Anyone know more about this?

(not to denigrate MeFi's win; this is a wonderful site, and Matt should be proud. See, all that hard work -- four years of work for $20.03 -- really pays off!)
posted by Vidiot at 9:55 AM on March 12, 2003

Congratulations, Matt. Vidiot, I also heard that MeFi had precisely 17144 votes. Funny, isn't it?
(seriously though-- and offtopic-- who are the five new users? I remember not so long ago there were 17139 people here, and even with the "membership is again closed" thing still going on, five new accounts showed up. Who are they?)

Since mathowietest2003 was the first one, I'd venture that mathowie has manually added some deserving people.

111, user 17144 is Wacom. Let's give her a rousing, pancake overlord welcome!!!
