Dude! I have always wanted to be the first person to post a snarky "double post" meta thread. Kick ass!
I think live footage of anything is ok though... er sumthin'. Although the live footage could stand to be a bit more dramatic.

Like I said in the comments (but expanded on here)...
(and far be it from me to question Mr. M, but...)
I don't even think this sort of thing belongs on the news. I couldn't believe it was carried on the national cable news networks... A fire, by itself, isn't news. Local stations have far too often used coverage of fires instead of actually going out and gathering news. It's easier, but it isn't journalism.
Beyond that, I don't think that it belongs here. I come here to find posts that meet the following criteria:
"A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others."
I saw this before (on CNN). While the content of the page may be interesting, but the stuff about the fire isn't... and lastly, what discussion will it warrant?
"Will you look at that thing burn!"
This is my take on it, of course. Your mileage may vary...

say matt, since you are really responsible for the long standing culture of 'self-policing', and it's become quite clear that you have a majorly relaxed attitude toward it all lately (and serious congrats on that!) perhaps an outright statement that double posts and self links are now ok is in order. then you wouldn't have to be deleting the comments of those who criticise them.

IMO, this is rare and is of the merit for a Front page post. Around this parts not to long back....(michiganese for 'backwards journalism')
we had a propane truck smack into an exit ramp. The local news station captured it (SKYCAM) and it was something. But a person was killed, i mean this explosion destroyed an off ramp and weakend the freeways structural integrety. I do not think that should be a post though. Not a self link. it would be LocalNewsFilter. Todays post is news and therefore fits the criteria for posting. Now if one went and recorded a housefire would that be acceptable? I imagine filming that would draw some mob that would start with:
"hey, whattyer doin?"
start like that see.
maybe we could have "badass" stars. (like STAN...)
like ribbons
ya know
he whom has the most commments deleted.
I wonder what a "banned" ribbon would look like?

"but y6y6y6's clam dip recipe sure kicks ass."
Wait till I film the clam dip. That will be an FPP for all time.
The trick is to not "over do" the sherry. It marries with the garlic perfectly and provides an aromatic character that one doesn't normally find in chip dip. But if you add too much it ends up being a clammy tasting sherry dip. Not good.
I'll post all the details on my site and then link it here tomorrow. Self-linking rocks!!! Why haven't we been doing this all along?

I've got to propose calling bullshit on letting this go. This is not any more interesting/engaging/postworthy than the thread that got deleted within the last couple of weeks where the guy saw some Madonna posters that had been covered up by Che posters(Ref: What Vraxoin said).
He at least(IIRC) put the images on an unlinked document within his site, not on his front page. I'm not in any way accusing Coudal of clickwhoring, but it just seems that one of the few things that tends to save a self-link when it's allowed is that you really are linking to just the information you're presenting.

These standards have never been rigorous. I once posted a link to the local weather report with impunity. Although enough people responded to my 'Snow in the South' spin to possibly salvage it, that post seems marginal as hell to me now, and I'm surprised no one confronted me for it at the time.
Posts at this site have always lived or died by Matt's judgement. In this case, he may have felt it was more important to discourage a pile-up on a new poster who fucked up than to keep the site pure of self-links.

So the other day, I post a link to an NPR story about blogging in which I happened to be interviewed. Still, the link is clearly not to my site, but rather to NPR directly.
But clearly, I'm crossing into the realm of self linking. In an effort to adhere to the guidelines, I post the link to MeTa in the hopes that someone else might find it interesting enough to post to MeFi proper.
Before that can happen, however, the MeTa thread is killed. This is a bit irritating, but such was the will of Matt. I was somewhat let down by the community, but such is life.
And then today, someone posts a self link directly to his own site, and it's allowed to continue happily along on the MeFi front page. Is the video footage interesting? Yes. I'm of the mind that it makes for a decent post.
I thought the NPR story would have been as well. Indeed, I think many readers would like to have been notified in advance of a Morning Edition story focusing blogging - what MeFi is, ostensibly, all about.
And so I'm a little pissed off . . .

aladfar, I deleted your post because you posted it in metatalk where it wasn't appropriate (blogroots would have been best). MetaTalk isn't a "staging area" or on-deck circle, it's a place to post bugs and talk about metafilter itself.
I'm not saying the coudal post is great, it's barely tolerable, plus yeah, it's a self link, but it's not the kind of thing someone can fake or do merely for the traffic. A building exploded, it's not something that happens everyday and not something I think will come up often enough to worry about, which is why I think people should relax on it.
As for double posts, I delete as many as I see, and I've spent the past two days at an adaptive path seminar, so I probably missed several. My apologies, but I need to build better reporting mechanisms for users to contact me.

Strictly speaking the WTC thread was not appropriate, and the site has never recovered from that day. Some people consider that the high water mark of what Metafilter does, and that feeling has eroded what I found particularly valuable about this forum.
Metafilter is still good and a fine way to kill time now and then but the floodgates are open to just about any chatty idea that anyone cares to paste up.
This is Metafilter, and that is a metafilter post now. Enjoy it or ignore it is the 1st law. (Complain here is #2)

It's a very, very good thing that we have guidelines and not rules. It's good we have a human, subjective, case-by-case judge in Matt. A luxury, in fact. The day the guidelines are followed blindly we may as well have a commitee of grey, pasty-faced apparatchiki pushing the buttons. Or even rosy-complexioned robots.
The price is small. Ocasionally a post that most consider unworthy stays up or one that most consider worthy is axed. Big deal. The much-vaunted pour encourager les autres argument has never been proved. The Spiderman post didn't unleash a torrent of new movie posts. If it did, they were deleted. More work for Matt.
It's more work for Matt but as we all secretly know, anything that means more work for Matt is good for everybody else. ;)

Olives in a Martini, Wulfgar!? Never! Just a generous twist - but never throw the peel into the drink, either. A Martini should be icy, transparent and unencumbered. Though a small bowl of big green manzanilla olives should be served with the Martini, on the side. The silver bullet signal is, in fact, perfect and anatomically correct. :)

Technically, a drop of olive oyl would make an interesting fat martini. Well, it doesn't. I've tried it. It's disgusting.
Dirty martinis, made with olive brine, are very good though. In the old days you'd thrown in a crushed (bashed with the fist of your hand) olive and it would make it all murky. They were cool for a month or two.
