I'm getting tired of the increasing tendency to add "filter.com" as an implied criticism of the theme of a thread or post, e.g. in this thread we start off with two - northkoreafilter.com and iranfilter.com. Is it just me, or does anyone think this getting a little old.

It was old the first time someone did it. It's this generation's "pancakes" and I doubt we see it decline anytime soon, because everyone wants to be the first on their block to make the same tired obvious joke in every thread they can.

I propose new features for metafilters future even though the future is not yet. I advise metafilter canvass the web writers and artists in general to make a speacial section for scholastic works, art, even a virtual metafilter cafe.

(we could be bigger then the Saturday Evening Post)

Then by your own admission you were simply contributing to the noise of the thread. Why?

If you have something to say in a thread, say it! It's like writing an essay: don't use point form unless absolutely necessary; don't assume your reader knows what you are talking about; explain to the best of your ability what your points may be.

I always thought the point of the X-filter comments was to point out overplayed themes, so I was a bit surprised about this comment on my thread about ants. I mean, Jesus, we've hardly begun to exploit the potential of psalms or ants.

There's been a lot of quibbling over what makes a worthy thread recently. *filter is only one manifestation.

I confess to participating in some of this quibbling, but there's usually always someone who thinks the topic is trite, irrelevant, or of limited discursive potential.

Perhaps this is just a sign of the community getting too big. There's a certain point past which "we" can't all agree.

In general, people use "-filter", or "metafilter: _____", or "this _____, it vibrates?" or "I for one welcome our _______ overlords" when they have no ability, either temporarily or chronically, to contribute anything worthwhile to the discussion.

I agree Hildago, I also hate it when people correct their own grammatical errors in a second comment - because it's usually obvious what they meant. (I know, irrelevant, but I'm getting into the whole 'I'm getting tired of' mentality).

I agree, I have no idea what your point was, even after looking at Deanc's comment.

And another thing - recently, I saw some old Metatalk thread from three years ago which had exactly this whole 'Metafilter isn't as good as it used to be vibe'. Personally, I think it's as good as ever. Kill me if I'm wrong.

timeistight - isn't the fact that you've already made teh mistake enough - correcting it is just taking up space and adding nothing to your original point. It's like saying 'Hi, I'm not really stupid' - it's selfish rather than helpful and it doesn't change the fact that you missed the mistake before you hit 'post'.

Anyway, I saw one error on a recent FFP, and went off on a tangent and a cosine that will not improve my already tattered rep around here. But hey, my sense of humor is under the weather; all I can do is non-sequitur.

If we don't want in-thread corrections, should MeFi be enabled for FFP writers to post-edit? (With the usual 'this was edited date-and-time' auto-footnote, o course) Or would that be even MORE annoying? Or is that another MetaTalk thread?

I am not even gonna TRY to put this one back on the tracks...

Shouldn't that be 'rep.'? And is non-sequitur a verb? And what does 'o course' mean? But, to answer your question, I don't think post-editing should be allowed and nor do I think people should post corrections - either get it right the first time or live with it.

To answer the original question, yes, in giant 40 foot flaming letters. Yes. It'll weed it's way out though, like ...overlords did, hopefully. Then we can be annoyed by something else for six months though.

No, really, I don't think it is. Or, it doesn't always have to be. One of my petty Mefi quibbles is when someone tries to dictate the manner of discussion. Some folks around here are good at long, well though-out posts. But then you have some people who mainly show up to crack wise, or quiet people who only pop in occasionally. And then you have some people who just don't shut up. You've got the people who care about politics and the people who don't. There are 17151 different ways to communicate in this community and I think that makes it better than if we all try to post the same way (even when it's annoying.)

I mean, I think Plastic is much better at handling sensitive issues, staying on topic and having some kind of uniform debate. It also bores me silly, which is why I come here.
