Madison Meetup thread got shoved off the page August 4, 2003 11:42 PM   Subscribe

Sadly - or perhaps deservedly - the Madison Meetup thread got shoved off the page. Last I heard, we were too wimpy to even come up with a date, much less a time. Can we begin again here? [no more inside].

This looks to be the latest, most authoritative post from the last thread:

rocketman: So August 29th or 30th will work for these folks, then:
rocketman
aine42
interrobang
UKnowForKids
eastlakestandard
mouthnoize
originalname37

As for Labor Day weekend (September 5th or 6th), can I assume that list remains the same, except with the addition of blueshammer?

I say you should all meet in Visions ;-)

I don't know if Labor Day weekend will work for me. I need to check.

i_cola: that you would suggest such a place only tells me you've never been there, never seen how awful, how truly awful that sleazy joint is. ;-)

As I said in the last post, Labor Day weekend is the weekend of Aug. 29/30, not Sept. 5/6. :)

And as I said earlier, both work fine for me, though Saturdays are best.

you take back what you said about Visions rocketman, YOU TAKE THAT BACK!!!

Okay, I'm putting my foot down. Argue if you will, but this lethargy is annoying me:

The Date:

Saturday, September 6th.

The Time:

8:00 p.m.

The Place:

(we can discuss this later. So much for putting my foot down.)

How's that?

rocketman: It's cute! [Well compared to many other strip joints in the US.] A good friend of mine paid her way thru college at Visions. She's now an established artist (of the painting variety) with lots of letters after her name and her work at Visions (and a few other places in the US) has inspired some of her art.

I saw one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen in Madison - after a whirlwind had passed nearby (summer 1997 IIRC).

Good job, interrobang. Works for me.

As for Visions, haven't heard of the place. But perhaps we should consider Bennett's Smut and Eggs for the meetup? I hear it's nice as well.

Nah, the Great Dane's basement is probably a better choice.

i_cola: yes, I've been to worse too. And personally, I have no problem with a woman choosing to work there. Your friend's story is empowering.

But I've had friends that were part of the culture there, and the stories that came out of the place made me very afraid for the women who worked there. Everything from the bald, pot-bellied bouncer to the classless clientele gave me the shivers. I have been there twice, and will not go back.

Back to the thread in question: interrobang! Decisiveness! How refreshing! Your specs meet my needs (especially since Labor Day was an iffy prospect), and I think the Great Dane basement is a fine choice.

"And personally, I have no problem with a woman choosing to work there. Your friend's story is empowering."

ah, i see...its just that you have a problem with the Madison girls who are sold to Visions by their step-fathers to be trained against their will in the stripper boot camp until they're of legal age to dance? i've got a problem with that too...i mean, would it be any less empowering if she'd bought a Cadillac Escalade instead of having gotten an MFA?

personally, and back on topic, i like that the plans for this meetup have taken a debaucherous turn. i'm no longer on the fence, smut and eggs for all!

OK, now about that sunset...

Count me in. Just let me know where. And I may need rough directions to our final location. My 'finding things in Madison' skills are a little rusty, but I'm good if I can just get some familiar nearby locations to work off of. (I can also work off old landmarks from about the last 15 years, ie: Go to where O'Kayz was...)

So, we're decided, then:

Saturday, September 6th, at 8:00 p.m., we will meet in the basement of the Great Dane?

Since this thread will inevitably be gone by then, is there any way that it can be made known closer to that date, like in the sidebar on the main page, please? Matt?

I sent an e-mail list of all Madison and Milwaukee users with addresses in their profiles to rocketman; I assume he'll send out a note close to the date.
posted by UKnowForKids at 6:17 AM on August 7, 2003

I'll send out an email closer to the date. Maybe I'll even send one out now, earlier, so that it gets on the mental calendars, then another closer to the date, so people remember what it was they had planned on the sixth of September.

so, which weekend is labor day, then?

Count me in as well. Now to figure out where the Great Dane is....
posted by crystalblue at 10:02 AM on August 7, 2003

crystalblue -- The question is not so much where the Great Dane (thank you, Yahoo!) is as it is which one of us has to be the designated driver. (Ooh. A conundrum.)
posted by aine42 at 10:17 AM on August 7, 2003

I was thinking the same thing myself. We may just have to flip a coin to determine the loser, um, I mean, the driver, for the road trip.

There's a possibility we can accommodate some crashing. I'll check with the roommate and get back to you.

I shall break my lurkers oath and say, yes, I will join the fray. Smut n' eggs could be inspiring, but Sunday morning might be problematic for night dwellers. Too bad Stevens is gone - Elvis memorabilia always made for a ripping good time. Great Dane Basement is good too - be sure to bring a personal flashlight. Sept 6th rocks.

Wow! First time I've ever wandered into MetaTalk, and find a meet-up being planned in my own little town. That never freakin' happens. Barring unforeseen circumstances, I shall be there.

(Can say that I'm too fond of the Great Dane basement though. I'd vote for the MU Terrace, but I'll follow the crowd on this. Beer, brats, and boats. Plus, if there *are* any underagers amongst us....)

I thought it was beer, brats & Badgers?
posted by i_cola at 1:14 AM on August 9, 2003

Ok, beer, brats, boats and Badgers. (And Babcock.)
posted by kayjay at 2:16 PM on August 10, 2003

Beer, brats, and a basement. And bah! to underagers. They can organize their own meetups, like I always did when I wasn't twenty-one.

They can go bowling. I'm going to get smashed.

I just made an attempt to get Mimi to join us. She's loads o' fun.

Sounds like we're going to have a pretty good crowd in attendance. Yay! (Oh, and rocketman, I'm with you on the whole 'getting smashed' thing.)

Aw, shucks! Lemme double check the calendar but I'm pretty sure that we're in!
