On Twenty Threads? Is this new? Is it customisable? Wassadeal, Matt?
posted by yhbc to MetaFilter-Related at 4:37 PM (41 comments total)

You know, as soon as I hit the "post" button, I thought, "wait - am I sure it wasn't always like that, and I just never noticed before?", and I didn't have a good answer. If that's the case, then I am an idiot, and this thread can be deleted without further ado.

Or, maybe I'm really just trolling for an on-line stalker/nemesis of my own. You'll never know.
posted by yhbc at 4:53 PM on October 19, 2003

Yes, no, no, no idea.

I would apply for the job of on-line stalker, but I just don't have the commitment to do the job properly.

I'm plenty committed, but time is at a premium. Anyone wanna go halfsies?

Now my damn settings changed after clicking that link.

Which is easy to fix, obviously, but still, a pox must be case on you and yours.
posted by The God Complex at 7:31 PM on October 19, 2003

Ah! I think I got a live one!

That what I wanted to happen, TGC! What are you gonna do about it, huh?!?

I think I'm dyslexic when I type, replacing one word with another for no apparent reason.
posted by The God Complex at 7:44 PM on October 19, 2003

Ahhhhh--how do I change it back?
posted by Aaorn at 8:06 PM on October 19, 2003

Drop-down menu above the text-ad (set it to "date").
posted by The God Complex at 8:08 PM on October 19, 2003

While we are on the subject, is it possible to add the drop-down menu to the thread pages so that the "sort by x" page can be generated from that page without reloading the main page?
posted by dg at 8:25 PM on October 19, 2003

No likee new default, but I guess I'll get used to the extra clicks. Or I could just bookmark the 'sorted by date' view, I guess. Still going into threads and backing out to the front page would get annoying.

I'm interested to hear if the change in the default view was a decision based on bandwidth usseage or a useability/design calculation of some kind, or, you know, just to mess with our minds (or an accident...heh) or something else entirely. Mathowie?

It's back to normal. Guess it was an accident. Either that or the terrifying thunder of our outrage made Matt change it back.

Aha! My ridiculously circuitous plan is one-quarter complete!
posted by WolfDaddy at 11:01 PM on October 19, 2003

"Normal" being a relative state, of course.

No Stav, you don't get it. It was not a change in the default setting. When you clicked on yhbc's link it switched your config to 'sort by recent comments' (look at the url).

No Stav, you don't get it.

You reckon? I've been using the dropdown list on a daily basis for three years, almost. I know the URLs for each setting by heart. I do get it.

I thought (and now I can't tell if I was just tripping or not) that the default had been changed, which I inferred for some reason from the thread starter. It seemed so, when I used one of my bookmarks to visit the frontpage, to test it, and the default view had changed. Or so I thought.

Whether that was true or merely due to my periodic random synaptic misfires and the power of suggestion is a question for the ages.

"I do get it."

Maybe now you get it. But according to what you just said, you didn't get exactly what I said you didn't get.

I don't get it.

I get it sometimes, but not as regularly as I might like.

I got it once, in old Bogotá, before the cartels moved in.

I took it once, in downtown Manila, just after the clampdown.

What I want to know is, where are the 52 extra comments said to have been posted since my last visit to MeTa that aren't accounted for by the threads I can see? If a thread got so flame-filled it had to be deleted, what was it about?? Dammit, I hate when I have to work in the morning and miss all the fun!
posted by languagehat at 9:29 AM on October 20, 2003

languagehat: Skallas and insomnyuk had a heated rematch. You can still catch the pregame show here. I don't know how it ended. I think one of them took the soul of the other one, put it in a pot, and dumped it in the Ping river.

And now let us never speak of it again.

but my comment in that thread featured a great looking tank.

Ljubljana: Thanks! I'm sorry I missed the meltdown, but that thread gives me an excellent sampling. I was going to make a joke about skallas/insomnyuk slash, but I see they beat me to it in the IRC chat linked to in the thread. God, I love this place.

q: Great tank!

Are you seriously using a MetaTalk thread to ask if someone is seriously using a MetaTalk thread to ask what happened to the MetaTalk thread that used to come before it? You're right, though—I was off-topic. I should have started a whole new MetaTalk thread to ask what happened to the MetaTalk thread that used to come before the thread that came before it.
