Dumb comments or is it just me? November 6, 2003 2:53 AM   Subscribe

Am I the only one who is questioning the intellectual text of Tiamats comments as of late? Sure, i've said some very embarrassing and pointless things in the past, but cmon! This is almost to the point of pointless blather. I guess you could say that I don't know anymore.

Well, I can vouch, with a fair bit of certainty, that I certainly don't know. I just don't.

Its not like anyones gonna go Green River Killer on him. I just want to see what other Mefites think, sans the bullshit "I just want to post a comment to feel important and psuedo intellectual" crap.

I think the phrase you're looking for is "intellectual heft." But if we start requiring that in the guidelines, it will be a bloodbath over here for weeks.

OK, I might be guilty of mundane stuff too. And I "apologise" to anyone offened by the previous comment. But seriously what do you think of this persons comments as of late?

Posting that might be even worse. I just don't know.

Hey! Leave our house Socrates alone!

Then again, I just don't know. Perhaps. Perhaps not. Who cares? Who are we to say? What is truth, anyway? Where am I? Is that you, Martha?

Posting the same sentence over and over in multiple threads is not contributing or participating, it is disrupting. Imagine if every user posted some irrelevant little bit in every thread...the site would be destroyed. What's bad for all is bad for one.

Warn him, then ban him.

Aye. Sometimes I bring it up in a backgrounded tab and let it sit for a while, winking at me. I can't close the tab. I want to close it. But I can't.

I dunno Keyser, it seems to me that you're the one looking for attention. I mean WTF?
posted by carfilhiot at 4:22 PM on November 6, 2003

Hello all, sorry to have caused all the bother.

Yeah, the site traffic did spike. But frankly, I had no idea anyone would notice the "I just don't know" comments. I did that because I only learned last week about the notice the "damn hippies" comments got.

At the time I was just posted the damn hippies comments because I was disgruntled and bored. There wasn't any master plan. And as was pointed out, no one seemed to notice or complain. I certainly don't consider myself a troll.

Someone did email me to ask about the "I just don't know" comments, I replied back that it was just an inside joke and didn't really mean much. I had no idea they minded so much.

I was amused by the attention that the "damn hippies" thread got, but only because I had never noticed at the time. And frankly, some of the comments it generated were pretty funny.

Sorry if I've appeared to be some kind of dangerous psycho troll or something. As anyone who looks at my commenting history will note I rarely do any commenting here at all. Mostly I hang out at K5 -- I've the same name there -- go ahead and check up on my "not troll" status if you'd like.

I do like attention, but I don't go out of my way to get it by spaming the community. I've been here plenty long enough to get around to that had I wanted to.

[Is there a max length for these posts?] Did I miss anyone's questions or comments that should be replied to?

Keyser Soze: I've been here a while now and I think I have a good idea what people find offensive on Mifi.

That said, you've thought *way* too much about this and need to take a big deep breath. I posted some comments that may offended some people (only the REALLY observant among us).

You on the other hand have been patently offensive throughout this thread. Your assumptions of my motive, and description of me as the enemy of Mifi are distasteful to say the least.

Your suggestion that: "Maybe next week tiamat could threaten to slice his wrists for more attention once this thread burns out." Is the basest of all.

The Christians among us might say "Judge not, that ye be not judged" (Matthew 7:1) However I'm pretty sure I'll come out on top in that comparison, so go ahead and judge me if you must.

MiFi = MitaFilter? I guess I just don't know.

On preview: why don't we make all our comments in the form of off-site images, so history won't know we ever came totally unhinged? Sweet.

stonerose: Well, I agree. At the same time, it's my image and I don't especially want it here, especially in that context.

I was wrong to put the (short lived) rude comment image. I didn't put anything evil (I'm sure you all know what I'm thinking).

I'll say it right out though, the kittens amuse me and therefore they'll stay until they don't. I hope that doesn't offend anyone.
posted by tiamat at 7:14 PM on November 6, 2003

For the record, I salute tiamat's elegant gesture of e-mailing those he might have offended with a personal explanation. Not that it was necessary - at least in my case - but, taken together with his responses here, I think it's a great example of politeness, regard for one's fellow human beings, etc... :)

Why did I just receive spam from tiamat?

Text:

Hi, tiamat (there's no 's') from mefi/K5 here. I just now noticed the metatalk post about my silly comments. I've posted a comment there to explain myself and I'm only spamming you all because I don't want my explanation/apology to go unnoticed. I apologize to anyone who's time has been wasted on this. I really was just trying to make a friend laugh.

anthema: It's an email I sent to the people in this thread who I thought might like to know I was going to be replying to the comments about me. The "attachment" is how your mail reader deals with a digital key signature, probably because it doesn't implement the standard properly (or because it was a web-mail interface). [Oops, I just noticed that you already figured that out.]

I think you're overreacting. It was a short email, to your published address, which bore onto a subject I had reason to believe you were interested in. Also if you re-read the email you'll notice that I explain in it why I was sending it, I'm not sure what other explanation you were looking for.

No worries. I overreacted.
[I have no problems with your posts, my problem in this thread is with KS.]
