Summer mixed cd suggestions?
April 17, 2004 2:55 PM   Subscribe

It is starting to get summer-y where I am at, and I was thinking about making a summer themed mix cd and going on a day trip somewhere. Any song suggestions?

Songs don't have to necessarily reference summer, but rather have a summer "feel", or remind you of summertime, if that makes sense. Mainly I am looking for those magical songs that put you in a great mood.

Any genre would be great, obscure songs would be good, but I am not against radio singles.

I am thinking of including

"Mr. E's beautiful Blues" by the Eels ("God damned right its a beautiful day!")
"Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder
"Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
"I Can't Explain" by The Who (or "the 'oo" if you like).

There was a band called Koop from Scandanavia. They released an album called Waltz for Koop, I think, and it is wickedly awesomely summer listening. Check it out.

I have very strong warm summer evening ? Subterranean Homesick Alien (by radiohead), though mainly due to how I was introduced to the song, not due to the mention of warm summer air. So chances are it won't actually help you much.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City yet, annoying car commercials notwithstanding.

Here are some electronic pieces which I think fit your theme:

"Since I Left You", "Extra Kings", "Live at Dominoes" and "Frontier Psychiatrist" (particularly the last minute and a half) by the Avalanches.
"Summer Days" and "Too Young" by Phoenix.
"The Real Life vs The Theme from Great Cities" from the amazingly constructed As Heard on Radio Soulwax, Pt. 2.
"69 Police" by Dave Holmes (from the Ocean's Eleven soundtrack).
"Ce Matin La" and "Sexy Boy" by Air.
"Saigon Disco" by A.R.E. Weapons.
"Sho Nuff" by Fatboy Slim.
"Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", "Revolution 909", "Around the World", "Superheroes" and "One More Time" by Daft Punk.
"Organ Donor", "Mashin' on the Motorway", and "High Noon" by DJ Shadow.
"19-2000", "Rock the House" and "Dracula" by Gorillaz.

I think that'll do.

"Walking On Sunshine"
Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Road Trippin'"
Bic Runga, "Get Some Sleep," "Listening For the Weather," "Good Morning"
Virtually anything by the Sundays
99 luftballoons
The Januaries, "Black Transmission" (groovy 50s sound)
The Proclaimers, "500 Miles"
Outkast, "Hey Ya"
Third Eye Blind, "Semi Charmed Life"
Right Said Fred, "I'm Too Sexy"
Sheryl Crow, "Soak Up The Sun," "All I Wanna Do"

Gin Blossoms, "Hey Jealousy"

And from the Empire Records soundtrack (huzzah for capricious youth),

The Martinis, "Free"
Coyote Shivers, "Sugarhigh"
Edwyn Collins, "A Girl Like You"

It could just be that much of that reminds me of high school and happier times, but I think they're all around good songs. Enjoy your trip!

One more: "Big Groovy Fucker" by Plump DJs. Unfortunately, that track is really hard to find. I think it was released exclusively on the soundtrack to the video game Wipeout Fusion.

"Summertime" by the Sundays (although precocious is right, just about anything by them is summery)

I am loving everyone's suggestions, here are a couple of instrumentals that always remind me of summer:
"Green Onions" by the Ventures
"Sleepwalk" by Santo and Johnny
posted by whatnot at 9:45 PM on April 17, 2004

If whatnot hadn't, I'd've said "Summertime" (the Sundays).

I will therefore add
"Countrysong" by Ephemera
"Three Small Words" and "You're A Star" by Josie and the Pussycats
"Ren" and "Sundays" by Moonpools and Caterpillars.
"Way Behind Me" and "Crash" by the Primitives

The Cardigans, "Love me, Love me"
Simon and Garfunkel, "Me and Julio"
Sixpence None The Richer, "Kiss Me"
Day-o (the Banana Boat song)
"Cruisin'" - I can't remember who sings this originally, and a google search only turns up the version done by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow in "Duets," which ain't half bad.
"Love Shack" - B52s
"It's the end of the world as we know it," and "Stand" by REM
"Stay" by Dave Matthews Band (sounds summerish, and is about a summer day)
"So Happy Together," Turtles
Johnny Nash, "I Can See Clearly Now"

"Our House," Madness
"Margaritaville," Jimmy Buffet (or, if you must, "Marijuanaville," Tenacious D)
"The Hideout," Sarah Harmer
"As Cool As I Am," Dar Williams

"Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds from The Breakfast Club reminds me of summer for a variety of reasons.

Every song from the Almost Famous soundtrack.

That godawful song from "Grease" (Summer Nights, or is it Summer Lovin'?)

Okay, I'm done now.

If you're at all into classical music, then you certainly shouldn't forget Vivaldi's conerto "L'estate" ("Summer"), the second of a series of four concertos which as a group are known as "The Four Seasons."

If the entire concerto is too long to include, I'd recommend just the final movement, which for my money is one of the most powerful bits of baroque music ever composed.

This was an awesome question to begin with (mainly because you beat me to it), but that takes it above and beyond. And I'm completely frustrated because I've vapor-locked on all the summer songs I love (or they've been mentioned-- I would say Fountains of Wayne's whole Utopia Parkway works, especially "Red Dragon Tattoo" and "Denise").
