If their forums are accessible to the public, then they're "fully public", whether they want them linked elsewhere or not. Perhaps they would realize this if they didn't have more jackasses per capita than the Penny Arcade boards, and that's quite an accomplishment indeed.

Linking to the main website is not a problem. Linking to articles in the forums where people have asked "dont share this outside of the forums" is a problem.
Keep in mind that public (non-pay) access to the forums may not have been in effect at the time the article was posted.
