Pepsi Blue origin? March 9, 2005 5:33 PM   Subscribe

What is the origin of this Pepsi Blue nonsense?

Was it an FPP of the faux blog? Was it an april fools' day site redesign? I checked every thread that returns from a search, but could not find the original.

This one maybe?

The unofficial mefi wiki has a page on it, but I can't seem to load the site.

I think "Pepsi Blue" refers to a post that's more marketing than "Best of the Web". It started from that first Pepsi Blue thread linked above.

As a noob myself, I find some of the internal MeFi cultural references (e.g. Pepsi Blue) to be both amusing and confusing.

When curious I check the wiki for background information.

Heck, I've learned about bananas, bunnies, drama hounds, pancakes, and Portuguese connoisseurs of fine spirits and cigars in short order!

It is interesting in a cultural evolution kinda of way. Lately I've been trying to figure out why "the" (teh) is constantly misspelled. Call me clueless, or just suspicious.

R. Mutt, Is this teh information you're looking for?

Thanks, I just found it in Wiki too.

What a difference 5 months makes. When the flood gates opened in November, a post like this would be deleted by #1 by now because it would have been full of nasty snarks.

Until the "Pepsi Blue!" Jihad made me realize the error in my thinking, I used to think that a post about, oh, I don't know, a company that apparently makes nothing but Horizontal Corduroy Pants would have flown on MetaFilter. Because, well, it's a funny concept, and you can't really tell from the website whether they're serious or not (be sure to click on the "for now: pants" section). Now, of course, I realize that making such a post would be nothing but "shilling" for the "man", so I wouldn't dare sully the front page with such tripe, and only mention sites that I find like that within semi-related MetaTalk threads, so as to not get my ass chewed out.

yhbc, I'm sick and fucking tired of you pimping for the Corduroistists. War's fucking over. Vertical won.

Give it a goddamn rest.

Now, if you wanna talk fashion-forward, then you're gonna wanna meet my pal, the Turd Ferguson Mesh Trucker Hat.

umm . . . so, it doesn't come in any other color than dark brown, then?

so did turd ferguson get started with the snl jeopardy skit or did they just borrow it? because if there is a person out there calling himself turd ferguson, i would like to shake his hand. *waits patiently*

I think Turd Ferguson lives in Poo Poo City. Would you like me to take you?

I can't load the wiki either.

Boaz, that is funny: I remember reading that thread when it was posted (not because of the incredibly memorable and stimulating discussion of soda color but because r. stevens got called out therein). That is a strange thread to spawn you're-a-shill suspicion. From a CNN link? I thought maybe mefi once caught a covert marketeer sharing this on the front page. Or is even that a parody? When will this accursed internet just BE HONEST WITH ME?

Some day Matt will reveal we're all secretly BzzAgents, and it'll be like The Man who was Thursday.

Q: Are (viral) ads best of the web or Buzzagent/Pepsi blue? A: depends.

Speaking of Pepsi Blue, both of these AskMe questions had a very viral-markety feel to me, but I decided not to make unfounded accusations and stuff, 'cause I didn't really care that much, and also because we all know where that'd get me. Up Turd Ferguson creek without a paddle!

well, the ironic thing is that even though many of us were suspicious of the PepsiBlue shilling, that product was yanked from the shelves in almost no time.

So much for the effectiveness of blog viral marketing, I guess.

I'm just counting down the days 'til Christmas so I can kick back and relax with a few hundred liters of Pepsi Holiday Spice.

That is a strange thread to spawn you're-a-shill suspicion.

It was more of a case of a post leaving a bad taste in people's mouth (heh) and it being used as an example of ShillFilter thereafter, even though it wasn't actually a shill.

I got the unofficial wiki to load, but it's all about adult webcams.

A "Pepsi Blue" callout is some people's way of enlightening the rest of us that a link might have some kind of tangential link to the advertising industry.

Because most of us are too busy hurrying to Wal-Mart in our SUV's so we can max out our credit cards to notice.

So..... is Pepsi Blue passe?
posted by dabitch at 4:45 AM on March 11, 2005

Everything is passé, my dear. But please don't think that'll stop anyone for an instant.
