Deleted relevant thread questions August 19, 2005 3:13 PM   Subscribe

My FPP was deleted today. Which, relevant to an ongoing thread (that I had not seen prior to posting) brings up interesting (or not?) questions about prohibited speech and its implications/consequences. . .

Oh, give me a break... What sort of questions about prohibited speech does having your article about cats turned down from a dog magazine bring up? Not very good ones...

The last thread, that you acknowledge being aware of, is still alive for all of your free speech/censorship needs. Why not use it?

flotson: You already seem to be discussing these issues in the ongoing thread. Are there different issues relating to the deletion of your post? No offense, but the post was simply bad, and frankly it's hard to believe you didn't intend it as a commentary on the MeTa thread.

Given that you have your own website to post this on, how is your speech prohibited?

Apparently those questions are also prohibited speech?

Wait. Is this a joke? It was a link to a domain hosting placeholder type site. Wasn't it? Was the joke that the computer added search terms related to the word "president" that were ironic given the full url?

For the record, you have a right to free speech. You do not have the right to have that speech distributed around the world for you by someone's personal website. Like this one. Sorry!

Your bad FPP got deleted and you wanted to make sure that everyone could still see it so you posted it in MeTa on a flimsy pretext?

Okay then. Moving on.

What a cheap, bad-faith stunt. Two stunts, actually, the original execrable FPP and this childish MeTa. Not getting enough attention at home, Flotson?

No it doesn't.

TJH, what does "Schenk" have to do with anything?

"Schenck v. United States, 249 U.S. 47 (1919), was a United States Supreme Court decision concerning whether the defendant possessed a First Amendment right to free speech against the draft during World War I. The defendant, Charles Schenck, a Socialist, had circulated a flyer to recently drafted men. The flyer, which cited the Thirteenth Amendment's provision against "involuntary servitude," exhorted the men to "assert [their] opposition to the draft," which it described as a moral wrong driven by the capitalist system. The circulars proposed peaceful resistance, such as petitioning to repeal the Conscription Act."

Schenk was superseded in 1969, and the draft was abolished a few years later. So what's your point?

As to the original deleted FPP, I don't understand why those placeholder sites are there. The past few years the web's been littered wih them. Remember the old "www.altavista.com" thing from the mid-'90s? Is the site's current holder trying to scalp it to somebody who can't spell "assassinate"? (For the record, I tried replacing "kill" in the URL with "assassinate"; Firefox can't find the page, and ping says it's an unknown host.)

There's is however www.assassination.com, that calls itself "The Leading Muder Site on the Net"; that one's got links to lawyers on it. And www.assassinate.com is all about pet dogs. However, there is a site that mentions our Dear Leader: Assassinate Bush dot com, which includes among its minimal content a link to IsDickCheneyDeadYet dot com, but that's just another placeholder. Anyway, this stuff inspured me to type random crap into the location bar: ladies and gentleman, there is in fact a site named I Am an Idiot dot com.

Dude, your link heads to an empty linkfarmy domain, with zero content.

MetaFilter is about linking to interesting things on the web, not zero content coming soon pages.

If you haven't noticed all the other posts actually lead to some content worth reading and talking about, I don't know what to tell you.
