Sweet Buddha on a bicycle, it's another IRC-related post. (Don't worry; I'll make it quick and painless.) Most of you noticed in this thread that most of the old regulars of #mefi moved to slashnet. We've since vacated that channel, as we've set up our own dedicated server at irc.ieattapes.com, and you're all welcome to visit. Yes, even you.
(No, it's not an 'affiliated' or 'official' channel. No, there is not a dress code. Yes, you may bring food and drink, but ensure you have enough to share with everyone. No liver casserole, though.)

Nobody has yet pointed out that the channel is #tapes now, not #mefi.
Then again, anyone who goes into the wrong channel will be kindly pointed in the correct direction.

I'm not sure what your beef with #mefi is, but the explanation is pretty simple. The server admin of irc.metafilter.com began instituting policies some of us weren't prepared to abide by, and we left for a temporary channel on slashnet. The irc.metafilter.com server admin shutdown the channel afterwards, forcing the remaining half of the chatters to the temp channel. The first thread was posted to direct them there so we didn't lose anyone.
Once the permanent server was established, updated information (this thread) was posted to ensure a complete transition from the temporary channel to the new and final location.
It's pretty straightforward.

Trained Monkey Instructions (just in case) For Trillian v3:
1) On the Contact List menu select "Trillian" -> Connections -> Manage My Connections
2) You should be taken to the Identities and Connections page within the Preferences dialogue.
3) Click "Add a new connection..." -> IRC
4)
In the "Server Alias" box type "I Eat Tapes"
In the "irc.trillian.com:6667" box type "irc.ieattapes.com"
In the Nickname box type your desired nickname
In the Username box (only used with /whois) type whatever single word you want, I use "fuckoff"
In the User Info box type whatever you want, I use "I SAID fuck off"
You can check "Automatically connect to this account at startup" if you like, and then click 'Connect'
5) At the bottom of your Trillian contact list click on the gray button, click 'Show Status Window' Once you're connected you should see the rules, and a line that looks like this:
"*** Mode change "+iwx" for user MyNick by MyNick."
6) At this point type "/join #tapes" in the text entry box at the bottom.
Voila.

2) On the Chatzilla window menu select "Edit" -> Preferences

A couple of other things - while your hostmask (which all IRC regulars see upon any person joining or leaving) generally serves to indicate your general area your exact IP is not revealed. IE while I'm crashed at the inlaws during our move to a new apt. mine reads:
fuckoff@ieattapes-F7120600.hsd1.nh.comcast.net
The latter half obviously indicates I'm located in New Hampshire, but the first half of my hostmask is intentionally obscured by the server so that my (and your) exact IP cannot be determined by other people in the channel.
So for the paranoid, your IP is safe, even if your general location (New Hampshire, San Fran, D.C., etc.) is not.
