I'm going to go ahead and call this an early callout.
I'm actually surprised that this caught anyone's attention.
If the first post is some kind of terrible self-link or pepsi blue, then I suppose a callout would be merited. But yousoundhollow is certainly not the first person to make shallow initial comments when first joining the community. Also not the first one to join because he/she had a post they wanted to make. I don't see anything wrong with this, yet.
Ah, who am I kidding? BURN THE WITCH!

I saw in a dream, well, more of a vision, that we were going to have a new user. His name will start with an S, Steve, or Stewart, or something like that. I forsee him being from Eugene or Salem, Oregon. He will be in the 23 to 35 age group. I forsee him making snarky, ironic comments in a post about Bush and then posting a one link FPP about a news item.
I would just like to take this time to call him out. What will you be thinking, Steve, you moron?

I foresee a time of rumors. And there shall in that time be rumors of things going astray, erm, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are, and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base, that has an attachment. At that time, a friend shall lose his friend's hammer, and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight O'clock.

No, Specklet, I'm calling her out because she posts what looks like spam (and is in effect simply noise), and it appears likely to me that the only reason for such posts is that she wants to post something to "METAFILER... for a very worthy cause." She could have made an argument, found a link, or even (gasp!) snarked to add to anything of value to any of those threads. Instead, I suspect (as raedyn illustrates) that she's doing as little as possible to get posting priveleges. So she has added to the noise, and violated the spirit of the rules.
I'm not calling for a ban, I'm seeing what the community thinks. After having made my point, it appears that I'm in a small minority, so I'll kindly STFU now.
And, nylon, your comment is pathetic. I wish the only thing I had to worry about was what some asshole on the internet posted to MeTa.

It seems that Kwantsar's main worry was the a bunch of posting was being done to enable a FPP, which was likely to be spam (of course I'd vote for waiting and calling out the spam, but that's just my take). Seems that there was possibly the mistaken belief that post count was tied to when you could make your first FPP.

what i wanted to post was time sensitive, that's all. some big gorilla news happening simultaneously all within one week - thought it might be of the 'interestingness' that metafilter is looking for. yep, it's as simple as that.
thought about posting it anyway, but nah....

Because if everyone posted content-less posts MetaFilter would suck.
In addition, vomiting eight bullshit comments to get past the limit goes against the spirit of the rule and shows pretty naked contempt for the community. Finally, I guarantee that yousoundhollow's FPP would be terrible, based on his or her only real post thus far.

yes, it was the video for the gorilla using a walking stick. thank you for the other two links, tpl.
but more importantly it's been 20 years since dian fossey was murdered in Africa. you may have read her book, gorillas in the mist, or at least seen the film. last weekend was the great gorilla run in london, which is a fundraiser for research done with gorillas.
and then this past weekend a guy i work with here in england ran the bristol half marathon dressed as a gorilla as part of his own effort to help raise money for the gorillas.
that was the time-sensitive part, as his charitable run is now over. with the 20 year anniversary of dian fossey's death, the implications and news of gorillas testing the depth of water with sticks, and the combination of the gorilla run, and the bristol half marathon....and with this being such a good cause, it just seemed like an appropriate topic for metafilter. dian fossey is quite controversial, and she alone would have generated the good contributions that metafilter is looking for.
two hilarious videos have been circulating around as well.
and coincidentally, in the same city where the gorilla-runner lives, a baby gorilla has been born. not that i'm any kind of a fan of zoos.
....and thanks konolia. i'm not depressed - but i am loving every minute of this, uh, discussion. it's been the highlight of my evening.

i simply saw that other people had posted only a few words, so i looked at my comments more as just part of the general consensus that the topic at hand was indeed of interest. as much as i love being individualistic, i do tend to do as others do, especially in places where i've not been for very long.

I would agree with anyone above 16505.
And what a shameful meta this thread has been - I hope yousoundhollow now goes ahead and post the (nice) gorilla FPP, maybe with a special mention to the recent Meta-Gorillas activities and a link here as an example.
Welcome to MetaTalk, ysh.

Lesson #1 - the Internet is not "your space", it belongs to everyone, so if you post something on the Internet and allow for public comments, you are inviting anyone who feels like it to read and comment on it.
Lesson #2 - you acknowledge that someone was trying to be helpful, but you still call them a fucking idiot? Pot, meet kettle.

Of course it is - he can say whatever he likes and, if he leaves comments open to others, they can say whatever they like in response. Either close off comments or don't whine about what the comments are. Once you open that avenue, you make your "own little space" more of a public forum than a private place. Of course, he is equally free to delete the comments, but has no cause to complain that they were made in the first place. You know, free speech and all that stuff. Either that or include some text with each posting along the lines of "only comments that agree with what I say are allowed".
You've never met a helpful idiot?
Of course I have, but that doesn't mean I tell him/her that he/she is a fucking idiot. If someone is dong their best to help, even if they are ineffectual, why would I insult them? To make myself feel smarter? To appear tough or manly and impress chicks? Why?

Welcome, yousoundhollow. Seriously. Try not to take it too personally (a timeless piece of advice in these parts, it seems). Yes, this pool is full of sharks, for sure - but test the waters for a bit and you'll find that they're just showing their teeth all the time only because they want to display their detailed knowledge of the shark dental system. See? They're geek sharks.
It takes time to find your place in the community, and newbies seem to get the mother lode of snarkiness. I, for one, encountered this first-hand, in part because of my juvenile enthusiasm; I won't rehash that ordeal here, but you can look it up if you want.
Get your sea legs. Be great. Welcome.

Kwanstar's post has inspired a feature request. Matt should write some code that changes the tagline for MetaTalk to the first sentence/clause of the most recent post in the etiquette/policy category.
For example, recently the taglines would have been:
Metatalk: This are inappropriate and embarrassing
Metatalk: I don't like the looks of this.
Metatalk: Is this what Metafilter's about?
Metatalk: Not sure if this is the right place to ask

Well, Decani, let me see if I can explain it to you. See, the problem was that yousoundhollow might have been trying to put something over on us, and we had to be vigilant, and watch her every move. It was hairy for a while, and kind of scary, too, not knowing when, if ever, she was going to try something fishy. Thankfully, Kwantsar was on the case, and alerted us to all be on the lookout for any suspicious comments or even a full-blown front page post by her. Luckily for us, it was brought to her attention that we were onto her, so she wisely decided to withdraw her post.
And we all lived happily ever after. The End.

Stauf, the whole idea of calling someone out because they may (or may not) be thinking about/planning/writing some obscure post for MetaFilter to be so absurd that I am having trouble taking it very seriously. But, MetaFilter doesn't exist in a vacuum - words that you write elsewhere will always have an effect on those who read them and who also participate here. Creepy or not, things are what they are.
