MetaWhoreFilter. Self-link to a (probably paid) article about some dumb whorehouse in Germany.

Are you sure it's a self-link? I don't doubt it for a minute-- it sure smells like one, but I did some cursory poking around on the site, even checked the whois, and couldn't find any actual evidence...

He has also posted a comment that links to a daughter/sister site of this "theCheers" crap-pile that's some virtual stock exchange sim.

I'm not going to link them here to increase the page rank of any of them, but you can see the stock sim link clearly displayed at the top right of theCheers page.

I wouldn't be surprised if all of his links were affiliated, but that's heresay.

To be fair, that may not actually be mediacurse's pic. Or even the pic of "Siim Einfeldt". Or even, "Siim Einfeldt" may not actually be mediacurse.

But this being the internet and all, and considering that's how these things generally work out, I'd be willing to wager along with my intuition and suppose that it is. There's articles by authors named "Richard Head" on that thecheers.org site - but they match the ones written by "Siim Einfeldt" in tone, typo, topic and style. Man, that's clever. Richard. Head.

I wish I had some international long distance minutes right now. I'd give a call to the numbers listed in the whois and have a nice little chat.

Hell yeah my panties are bunched. I'm pretty sure this is my first MeTa callout. I mean, I'm calm and nonplussed and everything, but righteously clenched.

posted by NotMyselfRightNow at 4:06 AM on October 30, 2005

no, the article wasn't paid for - who would pay for this type of article (this bad I mean)? Secondly, I do agree that it's a "dumb whorehouse in Germany".

The links in the comments really are my own sites, but I don't think this type of links in comments are forbidden? I understand the point about the main link though.

But yeah. Sorry guys. My bad. And there's no secrets, you don't have to guess anything (like I said, the sites are mine).

But Richard Head is someone else, not me ;)

Damnit, stop being so easy going, level headed and sensible! This is your cue to burst into dramatic flames and implode in an annhilation of loathing and despair!

Must be all that experimental grade cannabis over there. My envy is uncontainable.

No, the problem is that your in-comment self linking isn't even really topical. It's opportunistic advertising, basically.

Apologies for going all stormtrooper all over this. But this isn't good. You're probably going to get banned, if history is any indication. You might just get a week off. I don't know, it isn't up to me.

Now if you can stand it, please pass me that humongous baguette sized spliff you magically rolled up like it was out of thin air, it's well past bedtime for me.
posted by loquacious at 4:37 AM on October 30, 2005

lol, yep, I know I might get banned now. But like I mentioned in metafilter - lesson learned, the hard way. So if I will be banned, then I think it's fair. If not, I'll try not to fark up again.

Okay, this is now probably gonna ensure my ban but I have to agree with your comment about my comments. You know, when you're working with something then you do anything to promote them, to make them work. And this is how it should be. BUT the locations and the means should be chosen better than I have done it. And as I'm new to Metafilter, then I really didn't know what to expect from here. Well, fortunately (unfortunately?) now I know.

I won't apologise again (been there done that), but lets just put it this way - if you were doing what I have been doing, I'd pretty much do the same as you've been doing. Anyway, lets see what happens...

Off to get some more cannabis (now I would actually have a related link to put here from my own magazine, but I won't - see, I'm learning) :D

It’s about posting to any part of your site within the FPP. Otherwise, everyone would be playing the game of moving contnet off the front pages of their sites to a subdirectory and posting it to the blue as a headline.

That’s not how Haughey intended MetaFilter to be used.

Weither the contents appeared on your site via someone else, or your own means, if they’re in small text or laege, italic caps, front page or no, it’s still material appearing on your site. You may not have authored the whorehouse ad, and thus aren’t the original copyright holder, but you’re still pointing to something visible on your site. You may be sincere in your apology- or not, but your actions were hardly as much of an accident as you would profess.

It just amuses and fascinates me how you've had such an incongruously personal and vitriolic reaction to (another) self-link, and I thought it was worth mentioning. Yes, it's annoying. Billistic was even more annoying. I'd be very happy for mediacurse to be banned, by which I mean that I'd be happy to think that his login details will no longer work on this website. This whole "self-link then act all coy and aw-shucks I done a bad thing" schtick is getting really old. What makes it worse is that there are always plenty of members here who jump in and turn the fuckwit into a celebrity. They should be ignored until they are driven away by the lack of reinforcement that what they did was worth the fiver to get attention from the cool crowd.

Because deleted threads are visible via lowfi MeFi, does that make them visible to search engines and, if so, doesn't that mean that a deleted thread still has some value in page ranking etc?

What, you'd prefer angry defiance?

Optimus is hoping that someone DIES because of what they posted to a website? The call-out was decent, the poster was recalcitrant, that should have been the end of it (aside from administrative action). Instead, what? Frothing hatred from someone who thinks that apopleptic profanity is the soul of wit? A quick posse of mob justice?

To my mind that's an absoutely terrible precedent for Matt to be setting.
Exactly - because of the lack of documented guidelines here (not saying that's a bad thing, just sayin'), common-law is pretty much how things are decided. That comment almost (and to some minds, does) gives approval for self-linking, provided the person doesn't know it is not allowed. As you can't prove what someone doesn't know in this environment, denial makes it aceptable.
posted by dg at 3:17 PM on October 31, 2005

DG: Yeah, but is that such a huge problem? The link still gets deleted, and if they do it again, they're banned. Maybe you desire an iron hand of justice, but I think you're lookin' for trouble where none currently exists.
posted by klangklangston at 4:20 PM on October 31, 2005

KLANGKLANGSTON: The problem I have is that, if my understanding is correct (which it often isn't), the site that has been linked is still linked from MeFi even after it is deleted because the deleted threads are not actually deleted but are removed from the main page of the site - if you know the thread number, you can find it manually and it is still accessible via lowfi.mefi, therefore is accessible to spiders from search engines. In this case, the site that has been linked gains the benefit in page ranking from being linked to by a major site.

I don't think the problem is all that widespread yet, but it will no doubt catch on now that a couple of people have identified it. Ironically, we are making the problem worse by talking about it ;-/
posted by dg at 4:40 PM on October 31, 2005

It's a problem because it means that it will keep happening, causing this site to suck. Most of want to avoid that.

By getting offended because I was mean to someone who purposely breaks the rules here in order to earn a few bucks, and getting even more offended because of something I posted offsite, you reveal yourself as someone more interested in conflict with me than anything else.

Which is pretty funny because I have no idea who you are.

And I think you're seriously overestimating the amount of effort required to rebuke your upchucked discourse.
