Demanding "newsfilter" + commenting in thread anyway = me wanting to kill you.
posted by fleacircus to Etiquette/Policy at 8:28 AM (38 comments total)

2 out of 3 comments linked seem to approve of this usage of newsfilter, so what's the beef here again?
posted by scarabic at 8:39 AM on October 31, 2005

Agreed. They demand the filter, then post noise anyway?

The argument for the tag, as I understood it, was that (1) it becomes easier for people to avoid NewsFilter posts; and (2) that will result in less noise and fewer derails. If those people are going to chime in either way, who cares whether it's to clap or complain? Why bother with the tag, then?
posted by cribcage at 8:48 AM on October 31, 2005

So, is the objection just that some people appear to both long for "newsfilter" tags and read newsfiltery threads? Because I don't see that being a problem.

But then, if the objection is to in-thread commentary on the use or lack thereof of a "newsfilter" tag, I suppose that's worth chewing on, but it doesn't seem inherently worse than tag-neutral "newsfilter!!!" comments.

(And a really optimistic take on NinjaPirate's comment is that in this, a period of transition toward use of the 'newsfilter' tag by some, advocates of such a system will make a little bit of appreciative noise; as the transitional period passes, so will such comments. Of course, that is as noted probably really optimistic.)

Commentary on website + people wanting to kill each other = me weirded out.

Maybe it's about time to stomp all over people who take a term and add "filter" to it. And. Maybe it's about time to stomp all over people who write things like "MetaFilter: [insert some rather trite but puke inducing phrase or whacked out bullshit- here].'

Wait... They weren't "demanding" anything. They were saying that it was a good post in the genre of "newsfilter."
Are you out of legitimate windmills to tilt at?

cortex: advocates of such a system will make a little bit of appreciative noise

Sure, and they should expect a well-meaning raspberry and bird-flip in return.

scarabic: Your thread-MCing doesn't make me want to puke all over you for once. Good job! In other words, I don't count the first link really as appreciatvie noise but just the same ol' fussy newsfilterhater noise.

Ahh, so you're saying that (ambiguous reasoning) is negative. I'll buy that.

You don't count it as appreciative noise? Then you can't read. This callout is bunk. Please stop now.

Jesus, you even stole my light-hearted threat of assassination for this piece-of-shit callout.
Man, you're having a bad Halloween.
posted by NinjaPirate at 10:36 AM on October 31, 2005

I was up at 2:00 AM HST when this broke on the CNN red banner. I figured somebody would have already posted it to Metafilter, but nobody had. I then figured that since it was going to get posted to Metafilter anyways, I would take a stab at posting it in a way that included multiple links (since I don't personally care for one link news items), that was as free from political slant as possible and that was labeled "Newsfilter," since that seems to be something a lot of folks appreciate. Never mind for the moment that a headline like "Alito nominated to Supreme Court" is sort of obviously Newsfilter.

Anyhow, this is the first time (that I can recall) that one of my FPPs resulted in a Metatalk thread, so I suppose this is something of an important milestone for me.

Thanks for the positive comments and (yes) for the negative ones, too. I will keep them all in mind when putting together my next FPP. Metafilter continues to rock.

I don't get this callout.

I think, as we've talked before, that the "Newsfilter"-issue (I don't like the term either) should probably be fixed on a global MeFi basis. Then again, we don't have Halloween here in the far north where I am at the moment.

fleacircus - it's hard to tell what you're trying to say with all the parody of other people's comments. I know that it can be scary to make a callout and that incorporating some humor is a logical way to deflect that, but you should clarify just what this callout is about at this point.

Newsfilter is dead! Long live Newsfilter!
posted by blue_beetle at 10:49 AM on October 31, 2005

(to clarify my position, I appreciated Joey Michael's efforts to provide substance with the news story as well as attaching the "Newsfilter:" warning which was mentioned as an idea earlier in MeTa. My "noise" was a positive one.
cortex's optimism is well-founded)

I think Joey Michaels did rather a good job.
This callout is bullshit.

NinjaPirate: Oh it's not really a callout. I'm not saying NinjaPirate is some bad user. But I thought it would be nice if people who thought it would be neat to post "I'm glad you went through the trouble of marking this thread as something I don't want to read, as per the rather contentious agreement; nice work you boneheads" and other various such things could be aware that they could really stop doing that any time and not let the door hit them on the butt on the way out.

scarabic: It's basically what I just said. A couple people above understood it and agreed... If I misinterpreted some comments when they really meant "I liked newsfilter even before it was properly labelled and now I love it even more!" then that's my mistake and I feel dumb.

fleacircus, "I don't count the first link really as appreciatvie noise"
Well try to. Please.

Joey Michaels spent more time and effort creating a newsy MeFi post than he did copying and pasting the CNN link at it's heart, which is something nearly unheard of recently.
I had a real "dawn over the plains of MetaFilter" moment when I saw it: he made me smile making a post about American judges being appointed, and it wasn't because the content was any good, it was because he'd gone to the effort of making the post something of use.

In its own unreasonably expansive genre, Joey Michael's post is a good'un.
And I don't see why you have to use alan.spaulding's contentment to service your ends either - not all applause is sarcastic.

And congratulations on your first MeTa thread.

I'm personally tickled that the ad hoc construction "appreciative noise" has carried so well through this thread. It may be a tepid and accidental meme, doomed to a quick extinction with the obsolescence of this thread, but it's mine, dammit, mine!

posted by cortex at 2:34 PM on October 31, 2005

so, post good. people who would otherwise have said something like "what the fuck! stop the newsfilter!" instead said, "I appreciate this post for [x] reason. good on you!" Isn't that an improvement?

actually, I'm not making that a question anymore. that IS an improvement.

this callout sucks.

No need to turn this thread into your mistake, fleacircus, let's just reframe it as your being happy about something instead of your calling out bad behavior.

as confusing as this whole thread is, fleacircus raises an excellent question -- when was scarabic promoted to "host" of MehTehTalk?

or is his authoritative tone not imbued with any actual authority?

i keed, i keed, but really dude, you're all over "the grey."

Dood. If that time ever comes you'd better RUN because mathowie will have utterly LOST IT.

dude, you're all over "the grey."

Oh I know it. I have had to enforce breaks. But I do find the internal dynamics here as interesting as the links. Moreso as time goes by...

Hm. My user page says 2602 comments in the Grey. Click it and it says 3137. I'm further gone than I thought. But more to the point: bug! I better post it in the Grey fast....
