NYC meetup, Saturday Jan 14th...
posted by StickyCarpet to MetaFilter Gatherings at 6:07 AM (75 comments total)

We've bounced this around a bit, now here we go!

We have a loft space to use in Tribeca, email jan14meetup@gmail.com and you will recieve the invite with the exact location.

Also you can email mp3s to that address, for inclusion on the evening playlist.

I'll post a picture of the place in the coming days.

So now you have more than an hours notice, its time to come out of the woodwork!

That's pretty damn awesome. I wish I could make it, but I'll be up in Boston that weekend. And they're having their meetup the wrong weekend, too!
posted by Plutor at 6:28 AM on January 6, 2006

That sounds pretty darn sweet - I'll be there.
posted by Julnyes at 8:00 AM on January 6, 2006

I forgot about this! I'll have to cancel other plans, but I'll be there.

Can we get a karaoke machine? Can we? Huh? Huh?
posted by Lola_G at 8:13 AM on January 6, 2006

I have a karaoke-enabled dvd player, and a microphone, but I don't have any disks.
posted by StickyCarpet at 8:16 AM on January 6, 2006

I can't make it, that's Kite Flying Day in India!
posted by riffola at 8:21 AM on January 6, 2006

Oh, we got disks! But I don't want to be a big geek if the interest ain't there.

What's the deal with booze? Should we all contribute?
posted by Lola_G at 8:27 AM on January 6, 2006

Sounds fun, but the 955 mile commute is a bitch.
posted by JeffK at 8:35 AM on January 6, 2006

Oh, we got disks!

Then, totally! Can you post your song list so we can practice up?

Is there like a loft party after the meetup, or does everyone wander out into the bitter night?
posted by The Jesse Helms at 8:46 AM on January 6, 2006

Booze-wise, someone who drinks beer should propose something regarding that, I can get some whites and reds. Contributions will be welcomed, any thing else just bring it.
posted by StickyCarpet at 8:47 AM on January 6, 2006

does everyone wander out into the bitter night?

It's a big place, you can just sleep on the floor. But I think that calling it a loft party after 10pm makes sense.
posted by StickyCarpet at 8:49 AM on January 6, 2006

I haven't looked at them lately but I will dust them off and come up with a list. We (my sister and I) want to add to the collection -- so requests will be taken!
posted by Lola_G at 8:59 AM on January 6, 2006

I will not come if there is karaoke. That is all.
posted by dame at 9:06 AM on January 6, 2006

I'm out that weekend. I haven't had a weekend off drinking since October and that is my scheduled one.
posted by gaspode at 9:09 AM on January 6, 2006

Ah, damn you dame!

No really. That's fine. I'll save it for another night of drunken embarassment.
posted by Lola_G at 9:14 AM on January 6, 2006

I will not come if there is karaoke. That is all.

We can always put that on a different floor. And besides it depends on what your definition of karaoke is.
posted by StickyCarpet at 9:18 AM on January 6, 2006

Might as well just get this out in the open: anyone have a problem with darts?
posted by StickyCarpet at 9:20 AM on January 6, 2006

And besides it depends on what your definition of karaoke is.

Karaoke is people singing badly. Always. It can come to no good.
posted by dame at 9:24 AM on January 6, 2006

I was told I sounded like Nico the first time I did karaoke--which I took as a compliment.
posted by brujita at 9:36 AM on January 6, 2006

I'm with dame on the karaoke. But darts are great. Do I have to aim at the board, necessarily?

I think it should be BYOB, no?

gaspode, you schedule weekends off? WTF? Why not just insincerely swear off booze for a day or two after really bad hangovers like everyone else?
posted by CunningLinguist at 9:48 AM on January 6, 2006

Karaoke is people singing badly. Always. It can come to no good.

ah, then you've obviously never been to Punk Rock Karaoke at Arlene's Grocery! there have been some truly monumental performances there, and I'm not even talking about mine!
posted by shmegegge at 10:10 AM on January 6, 2006

That's because punk rock is also people singing badly.
posted by smackfu at 10:29 AM on January 6, 2006

gaspode: I haven't had a weekend off drinking since October and that is my scheduled one.

Then just don't drink. Pretend you are at the aquarium or the zoo and laugh at the funny animals.
posted by StickyCarpet at 10:42 AM on January 6, 2006

StickyCarpet -- I just can't do that. I like to drink too much. I get alcohol envy. And it's not just the booze, it's the too much bad food/late night blah blah feel like shit the next day that I want the weekend off from.

anyways, sounds like it will be fun, and I'm sure nobody will notice that I'm not there.

(will you, nobody?)
posted by gaspode at 10:51 AM on January 6, 2006

Gaspode, I will definitely not notice that you're not there because you will be there. Next Question?
posted by nobody at 11:23 AM on January 6, 2006

No time for this meetup has been posted? I'm a planner; I need to know what time.

But you know I'll be there.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 11:50 AM on January 6, 2006 [1 favorite]

...the relative uncomfortableness of a meetup in a non-public place (serial killers, anyone?)

item, you got it backwards. We plan on killing everyone not in that room.

No time for this meetup has been posted? I'm a planner; I need to know what time.

The info's in the super secret super email, TPS.

Since I don't think the time part is so super secret, here:

It says 8PMish until midnight or later or later or later.
posted by nobody at 11:59 AM on January 6, 2006

Only that when I throw them at the striped cork board they always go directly into that bit right in the middle.

"Might as well just get this out in the open: anyone have a problem with darts?"

The info's in the super secret super email, TPS.

Actually mine didn't include a time.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:05 PM on January 6, 2006 [1 favorite]

But I still love you :-D
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:05 PM on January 6, 2006 [1 favorite]

Huh. That means that the machine sending out the super secret email replies is making them up as it goes along. Who knows where each of us is being sent? Who knows when each of us is being told to arrive? What nefarious deeds will the machine ask us to perform next??
posted by nobody at 12:15 PM on January 6, 2006

Mine actually says 12:01 PM. I think the automated machine is getting cheeky.
posted by smackfu at 12:28 PM on January 6, 2006

(No, actually it says AM, I just can't read.)
posted by smackfu at 12:28 PM on January 6, 2006

From my "Overzealous List of Resolutions for 2006":
#27: Go to a MeFi meetup
#32: More darts
#45: Less drunken karaoke
If I accomplish two thirds of these on 1/14, I'll call it a wash.
posted by Oddly at 12:36 PM on January 6, 2006

Timing: doors open at 7pm if you want to fuss over some food or drink or whatever, 8pm is meetup start time, at 10pm or so we call it a loft party, and we see where it ends up.
posted by StickyCarpet at 12:37 PM on January 6, 2006

I will not come if there is karaoke. That is all.

Oh yea, dame? Well, I will not *not* come if there is karaoke.

And I have a FABULOUS voice.

I will not come if there is darts.
Darts killed my chinchilla.
posted by hellbient at 1:25 PM on January 6, 2006

No, see all you people can claim that you do karaoke well, but you're wrong. There is no such thing as good karaoke. My favorite singers ever could do karaoke and somehow it would be bad. It always is.
posted by dame at 1:49 PM on January 6, 2006

Why not do it like the Gong Show, but instead of gonging contestants, you throw darts at them?
posted by gigawhat? at 1:59 PM on January 6, 2006

Dame - bad karaoke is good karaoke.
Same reason the first couple of episodes of American Idol is worth watching, then it just gets worse as the singing improves.
posted by hellbient at 2:20 PM on January 6, 2006

Okay then hellbient, how is having people pollute your space with caterwauling fun?! I swear, karaoke is the worst invention of the twentieth century—that's right worse than fascism and the nuclear bomb: karaoke.
posted by dame at 2:24 PM on January 6, 2006

I think we should all just agree to give in to dame's ultimatum. Pictionary it is.
posted by StickyCarpet at 2:26 PM on January 6, 2006

Ah Pictionary, the primal confluence of pictures, diction, and canaries.
posted by nomad at 2:32 PM on January 6, 2006

I think both StickyCarpet and nomad are correct. But really, you guys can totally have karaoke. But I have a policy to not go places that have it. I thought it would be fair to give you a choice.
posted by dame at 2:39 PM on January 6, 2006

dame, don't be disingenuous. You know you are holding all the cards. Without you we would have no choice but to cancel the whole thing.
posted by StickyCarpet at 2:43 PM on January 6, 2006

i suppose it depends on the caterwauling and my mood. I generally have a pretty high tolerance for horrible noise. The karaoke I hate isn't the good or bad kind, but the mediocre kind. And unfortunately, a lot of it ends up being just that. In any case, I don't care either way about karaoke at the partay. In fact, you're probably right that no one should be subjected to it involuntarily. But it's your loss missing my horrible singing voice. I may just send a few mp3s of my karaoke recordings over though. ; )
posted by hellbient at 2:44 PM on January 6, 2006

Not to, you know, play the "I know you in real life" card, dame, but is it not true that you were at one Miss L and Miss A's 4th of July party, for which Miss L had bought a karaoke machine off of a 12 year old girl on Craigslist?
posted by nobody at 3:58 PM on January 6, 2006

Karaoke is a painful reminder that I am not, in fact, James Brown.
That said, will try to catch the first half.
posted by kosem at 4:19 PM on January 6, 2006

I once mooned James Brown.
posted by Captaintripps at 4:56 PM on January 6, 2006

Oh, nobody, I forgot about that. In my defense, I had no idea it would be there. And only one person used it. But the Fourth of July party is an exception to many things. It's the only day I eat food from the fascist co-op, for instance. It's the social event of the season.
posted by dame at 5:45 PM on January 6, 2006

I will be there, and I sincerely hope that I get to see each and every one of you get up there and do karaoke. And I don't just mean singing. I mean dancing, body language, facial mannerisms, really getting into the karaoke, like you mean it. Seriously. Don't just do the karaoke. Live the karaoke. For therein lies true karaoke Nirvana.

That said, there is one easy way to avoid seeing me do karaoke - drop Sloop John B from the playlist. Seriously. It's the only song that I will karaoke. Not that I'm any good at it. But a man has got to set boundaries.

(And I'll bet you ANYTHING that dame would kick our collective asses at karaoke. She just doesn't want to do it because she's afraid she'll hurt our feelings and make us feel inferior.)

Alrighty, I changed my mind. Me and mr. g may be there. I just emailed for an invite.

Never underestimate the power of peer pressure.

now, here, just take a hit of this, everyone's doing it...

It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.

I don't want to catch anybody not drinking.

ah believe ah can make 't. emailed the respond-o-matic in hopes of getting a secret assignment to assassinate the space-pope.

karaoke: go!
darts: go!

if I'm there I will bring booze. if I'm not, er, I won't.

StickyCarpet Writes to me:

Can't remember if you weighed in
on the Sat. Jan 14th meetup.

Shall we expect you?

I respond:
Oy. This is a really bad weekend for me. I'm doing some legal work for a fellow Mefi member...assume no, and if I show, you'll be surprised. I really do plan to go to a meetup. I'm just very busy. i dont know what to say...
