London Meetup!? January 10, 2006 7:17 AM Subscribe
London Meetup!? Further to Ludwig_van's question about getting gigs in London since moving over to study from Pittburgh, I propose a meetup at the gig we're arranging. February 18th, Chiswick, anyone?
Aren't London meet-ups usually, shall we say, underattended? (I don't expect them to be in Cornwall but will point out the Oxford one was well attended)

There's a good chance I'll be down in London around then - if I am, see you there.

How often do you get to support two MeFi members anyway? Especially those that have made the journey from Pittsburgh to England.

Can't someone use Google Earth to work out a central meeting area for all UK MeFites? I'd be happy to go there (as long as it doesn't end up being Birmingham at any rate).

biffa: I thought the last one I attended had enough attendance.
It looks like I might be able to attend this.

My past record on these things hasn't been great but I'd enjoy meeting up with you all so count me in. Unless anyone has any objections I'll let the monkeys know.

Course, it won't be the first time we had a meetup where Mefites played, as well as drank/chatted/shouted out. The Oxford one was great fun - we had shoutouts from the stage!
I'll try my best to get to this one.

I'm up for it...(uh, how much will it cost?)
It's fu-ree-hee (£0) on the door. And the drinks aren't at all pricey. In fact, there more what I'm used to in my native North of England.
Nearest tube is Chiswick Park (District Line).
And if this meet gets any more popular, we may have to find a bigger venue for the next one. w00t, etc.

Birmingham is not shit!
I'd like to go but it's my birthday and last year when I went to a meetup on my birthday I neglected them for my birthday celebration pals. I felt bad. Then I felt drunk. Plus London is just too much of hassle/expense.
I am all for a not-London meetup when one is organized. I don't regularly read the grey -no rss feed- so if somebody organizes it - email me!

Well said srboisvert. No need for digs at beautiful Brum.
Anyway, recent fatherhood - and the choice of a venue on the exact opposite side of London from me - means I'm very unlikely to be able to attend. I'll see what I can do though.

I think the one in March was also really well attended (and jolly good fun as well). But sadly I prolly can't make Chiswick in February. Tell us all about it if I can't.

It's right across the other side of London for me too. MrMustard, I'm not too far from you, so if you're going, let me know, we could travel together if you want.

The location looks like it's about a mile from Hangar Lane - where (I think) I can get off the Oxford coach. Is that doable, Londonites?

Despite the fact that the music, alcohol, re-aquaintances and female MeFites are all unexpectedly on the table, I don't think I'm going to make it.
Unless time, money and distance issues are spectacularly resolved before then. About £1 mil should cover it. I'll even buy the drinks.

Neither of the coaches stop anywhere between Hillingdon and Baker Street (Espress) or Shepherd's Bush (Tube), unless they've changed it.

Worryingly, I can physically do that.
I might come.

Oh, goody. How will we know each other? Shall we al wear red carnations, or do we have to learn a secret handshake?

At the last meetup we just hung around looking for other likely nerds. However we were in Covent Garden, and nerds are usually barred from entering the cool hangouts or embarrasingly incorporated into street theatre until they leave, so it wasn't too hard to spot each other.
I would suggest you distribute "I ♥ quonsar" badges for added security.

Who'd you call a nerd, nerd?! I suspect perhaps a tin-foil hat dress code might serve to identify us and also get us past the queue to all the cool bars.

Sweet, I've never been to a meetup before. It'd be great if you guys came for the inaugural show of my European tour.
As for what sort of music, I'd compare myself to The Decemberists and Belle and Sebastian. Check the link on my user page for audio.
And thanks to armoured-ant for the setup.

dash_slot-: the Oxford Tube used to have a request stop at Hanger Lane (my brother used to use it in the 90s), but I'm pretty sure the Shepherd's Bush stop superceded it. You can get the 237 bus from Shepherd's Bush.
I've finally coughed up my $5. Can I come too?
