MeTa Gras 2006 - Going down to New Orleans for the first Mardi Gras since Katrina? Well, why the hell not? [mi]

February 28, 2006, I will be hosting a drunken get-together along the Zulu, Rex, and Elks parade route. Come raise a cup with us and help keep the city alive.

Come pass a good time with us. Post here if you’re coming down and I’ll email you with the information on where we’ll be.

How big will Mardi Gras be?

We'll be expecting boobie pics, chefstah. and no, not of yours.

I can't go. I would do nothing but cry, drink alcohol, and sleep with hookers. Just like when I lived in New Orleans.

Alas, my NOLA trip is already scheduled for the first week in June.

You three are excused. But anyone else not going better have a good reason.

I'd love to party on down to NOLA.

Unfortunately, it's located in the USA. And international travel involving the USA is a dicey thing at best these days. I'm afraid I really have no desire to be anally raped by your rentacop airport security, nor deported off to Syria because I happen to share a name with someone on the watchlists.

Maybe a decade or two from now, when the USA has regained some sanity, should such a thing happen.

The sad thing is I'm in New Orleans right fucking now, but I probably won't be here for Mardi Gras (accepting a job in the Bay Area, it looks like). This'll be the first Mardi Gras I've ever missed, and it's the one that counts.

"Well, why the hell not?"

I'm an atheist.

Sorry coldchef. Had to show you at your best!

Nice.

Would I be crazy to come down there with my 6-year old? Because I am considering it.
posted by LarryC at 5:29 PM on February 9, 2006

I'm wicked excited because my CASE of beads just arrived for the ever so debaucherous affair that I'm co-throwing here in Albuquerque. Any locals want to come? 2/28 at Blu.

ColdChef - next year!

There may not be a New Orleans next year, dammit!

(It's not THAT crazy to come down with a six year old. The parades are fun and the zoo will be open. If it makes a difference, I'll have my almost two year old with me.)

ColdChef: I'm considering coming back home for this Mardi Gras. Do you think getting a room on the north shore is a better idea than trying to stay in the city? On the otherhand, I'd need to stay sober enough to drive back which would be a drag. Any recommendation? Email me the local.

From the article linked above, there seem to be plenty of rooms in the city left to rent.
posted by ColdChef at 6:03 PM on February 9, 2006

I took a look at the article but my son just got back from a job down there (installing new network cabling in the Superdome) and said that some of the rooms aren't quite up to par(plumbing problems). They had him housed in Gretna so I don't know that this is the case in the area of the quarter. I'm going to give the Marriot on Canal a call tonight. (Shitty picture from a disposable camera of the offspring up on the roof.)

You know, according to this there isn't much left...however, you could join these guys. Seriously, if there's ever been a time to do MG cheap, this is the time. Bring your camping gear and find an unclaimed neutral site. Plenty in Mid-city...

Hey brundlefly, congrats on the job! You were most welcome at the Berkeley meetup. Won't be around to say welcome back, but I'm sure others can take care of that. Cheers.

Throw us Something, America. Wish I could make it Chef. This is a heartbreaker. The whole situation is.

So, to sum up this thread, looks like I'll be drinking alone.

Fair enough.
posted by ColdChef at 4:56 AM on February 10, 2006

Oh, you won't be drinking alone, your drinking partners will just be thousands of miles away, that's all.
posted by mr_crash_davis at 11:06 AM on February 10, 2006

Hmmm. That actually makes me a bit happier.
posted by ColdChef at 11:28 AM on February 10, 2006

Agree with mr_crash_davis. My NOLA-native girlfriend and I would be there if she wasn't about to change jobs and I wasn't a freelancer working a gig I need.

Chef, can I take a rain check and meet for a drink later in the year? I mean, I can't be surviving on my own gumbo and Sazeracs all the time.
posted by lackutrol at 3:30 PM on February 10, 2006

I'll be there with 2-3 friends, exacting revenge (crashing on the couch of) on a friend who I helped move out of NOLA to Austin in November, who's just now moved back.

Chef, I just caught this thread. I'll be there. Send directions.

As a resident of the Big Moldy with little else to do, I suppose I'll stick around.

I've just locked down my j-school spring break. I'll be in town, at least, for the whole week. Whether I'll be able to get to you, I dunno (I don't know my level of autonomy).
How should I get ahold of you?

Dammit. I just got back from Mardi Gras and found out that I would have had company today. Sorry, guys. Maybe next year, if a hurricane doesn't wash the rest away?

My Pics from Mardi Gras this year.
