I hear www.guide-creditcards.com eats babies and kicks puppies.

What's this ?

On visiting that dirty spamhole, their tracker says "Online: 2. Today: 10". All from this thread or Projects, I bet...

Good. I need a new credit card to pay for my penis enhancement.

Looks like the owner of www.guide-creditcards.com has just nicely demonstrated the need for a "must act like a MeFi member for at least a little while before posting to MeFi Projects" rule.

The owner of www.guide-creditcards.com has also apparently deliberately abused a popular communal weblog, demonstrating that the owner of www.guide-creditcards.com has little to no understanding of how online communities operate, and that the owner of www.guide-creditcards.com has little to no respect for the members of those communities. I don't see why anyone would ever want to do business with someone like the owner of www.guide-creditcards.com. That's what it looks like from here, anyway.

The shitty thing about spammer pile-ons is that they don't respond the same way dumb-ass self-linkers do. No flame-out, no cutting off of hands. Nothing.

I wish I could charge my comment spammers 5 bucks a pop before deleting them too. What a good racket!
posted by evariste at 9:17 PM on February 22, 2006

I just voted for it. A vote for deletion.
posted by geekyguy at 9:18 PM on February 22, 2006

what's most hilarious to me is that it's endorsed by WillieD, a member since 2002, whose sole contributions to metafilter have been three "."'s in obit threads and one 10-word comment in another.

what is it about that project that motivated you, WillieD? you fascinate me.

Blind tired and mentally confused is all I will lay claim too.I was actually quite appalled and was going to flag it but accidentally voted.

*MeFi receives another good rogering from a noob spammer.

Christ am I ever glad "post this project to mefi" is not a single-click process.

I officially call for a beheading followed by a defenestration.
posted by matkline at 9:58 PM on February 22, 2006

matkline-I think the other way would be more entertaining. Defenestrate, then decapitate.

This website is an online resource for Credit Cards!

What makes it worstest is that it is going to increase exponentially. The assholes have discovered they can use MetaFilter to the benefit of their pocketbook. This place is about to be raped.

If you willfully neglect to actually open the window before throwing them out of it, it's quite likely you can achieve both decapitation and defenestration in one easy and time saving step.

Of course, now I'm going to have my asshat handed to me - with my own head still all up in it - by hard core etymologists and linguists arguing that proper defenestration can only occur out of an open window.

To which I can only argue that the window wasn't (broken) open until they hit it, and they weren't actually being defenestrated until after the window broke. QED.

And for those who don't know, and those who think they know, QED = Now it is time for a stiff after-work drink, you fucking fuckers. Cheers.

Optimus-I'd hardly call this an exponential increase.

A price hike for registration is definitely a good idea, though, to mitigate this problem while it's still incipient and not yet raging. There has to be a number that is still reasonable for most people who want to join MetaFilter, but is high enough to deter most spammers. What if it was raised to $20, and some of us donated to an "indigents' fund" that would pay the fee for those who can make a convincing case that they would add to the community but simply can't raise 20 bucks? I use Fastmail, a paid email service, and the Fastmail users have a similar fund set up for people who would like to use Fastmail but can't afford it. I think that would take some of the sting out of the higher fee. And face it, $20 is the price of a few beers at the bar. MeFi provides worlds more entertainment than that.
posted by evariste at 11:13 PM on February 22, 2006

$20 is pretty cheap for advertising. I don't think that will be a deterrent to anyone besides legitimate new users.
posted by grouse at 11:27 PM on February 22, 2006

LOL.

Actually, I'm think this is pretty funny. What an astoundingly wide door to leave open for them.

"Actually, I'm think"?! WTF?
posted by five fresh fish at 11:56 PM on February 22, 2006

I agree with driveler, who posits that charging more would actually increase the ratio of spammers to legitimate new signups.

The real solution can only be implemented by the search engines, which will either need to establish a shared database of blacklisted spammers, or change the way sites are indexed...

But in the meantime, I suggest that for corporate spam (not the idiot schmuck who insists on linking to his own tedious blahg), everybody put this address on their bookmarks toolbar:

http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html

And each time a spambastard shows his face at mefi, we all fill out the report like so:
The specific web page or site that is misbehaving:

http://www.guide-creditcards.com

Type(s) of problem (check all that apply):

Choose "other"

Additional details:

Blog spamming

Everybody should do this, and hope that Google penalizes the culprit by dropping them in page rank, or eliminating them.

As it stands, nothing bad we say here about the offending companies will make much difference, because most people will not be clicking and reading the comments, and just the fact that the address is mentioned/linked helps their page rank overall. Mission accomplished.

It has been removed.

Tomorrow, MeFi projects will require approval before sites are posted. Dumb stuff like this will no longer get through.
