Looks like the owner of www.guide-creditcards.com has just nicely demonstrated the need for a "must act like a MeFi member for at least a little while before posting to MeFi Projects" rule.
The owner of www.guide-creditcards.com has also apparently deliberately abused a popular communal weblog, demonstrating that the owner of www.guide-creditcards.com has little to no understanding of how online communities operate, and that the owner of www.guide-creditcards.com has little to no respect for the members of those communities. I don't see why anyone would ever want to do business with someone like the owner of www.guide-creditcards.com. That's what it looks like from here, anyway.

If you willfully neglect to actually open the window before throwing them out of it, it's quite likely you can achieve both decapitation and defenestration in one easy and time saving step.
Of course, now I'm going to have my asshat handed to me - with my own head still all up in it - by hard core etymologists and linguists arguing that proper defenestration can only occur out of an open window.
To which I can only argue that the window wasn't (broken) open until they hit it, and they weren't actually being defenestrated until after the window broke. QED.
And for those who don't know, and those who think they know, QED = Now it is time for a stiff after-work drink, you fucking fuckers. Cheers.

Optimus-I'd hardly call this an exponential increase.
A price hike for registration is definitely a good idea, though, to mitigate this problem while it's still incipient and not yet raging. There has to be a number that is still reasonable for most people who want to join MetaFilter, but is high enough to deter most spammers. What if it was raised to $20, and some of us donated to an "indigents' fund" that would pay the fee for those who can make a convincing case that they would add to the community but simply can't raise 20 bucks? I use Fastmail, a paid email service, and the Fastmail users have a similar fund set up for people who would like to use Fastmail but can't afford it. I think that would take some of the sting out of the higher fee. And face it, $20 is the price of a few beers at the bar. MeFi provides worlds more entertainment than that.

$20 is pretty cheap for advertising. I don't think that will be a deterrent to anyone besides legitimate new users.

I agree with driveler, who posits that charging more would actually increase the ratio of spammers to legitimate new signups.
The real solution can only be implemented by the search engines, which will either need to establish a shared database of blacklisted spammers, or change the way sites are indexed...
But in the meantime, I suggest that for corporate spam (not the idiot schmuck who insists on linking to his own tedious blahg), everybody put this address on their bookmarks toolbar:

And each time a spambastard shows his face at mefi, we all fill out the report like so:
