Quality conversation, mostly.

I think it would be interesting to see a chart of post distribution by user name. I'm sure 20% of the users account for 80% of the posts/comments.

I remember good old post #1, which really kicked the site off with a bang.

ha! did you not like the movie or something, indeed.

Thanks, Matt. This is a pretty good site.

Seriously, though, thanks Matt!

(I'll try not to hold it against you that for three years you left me to lurk in the shadows until I could finally become a member. No, no! It's okay!)

And how many typed and deleted comments that never got published? I'd say infinity plus one, maybe two.

Congratulations Matt. You've made an excellent website and one which you should be truly proud of. Not only has it gained international fame as a premier website of note, it also managed to get me to part with $5 of my hard earned cash. That in and of itself is a pretty hefty achievement.

Matt; the line graph is useful but it dosen't tell the whole story. When do you think MeFi really took off? What were the reasons ad factors behind it doing so? Speech, speech!
posted by Effigy2000 at 3:57 PM on March 13, 2006

Got a ratio of posts / comments for MeFi vs. MeTa vs. AskMe?
posted by whir at 3:59 PM on March 13, 2006

As someone who's been lurking for a long time, and finally decided to forfeit my $5, I feel mildly qualified in saying 'congratulations, MeFi'. Here's to 50,000 more!

Congratulations, mathowie! I'm a newbie, but I love this place, and I really appreciate the time and effort you must put into running it. Wish I'd known about it from day one!

whir: according to Alexa (which isn't particularly reliable or representative, but hey...)

Where do people go on metafilter.com?
* ask.metafilter.com - 49%
* metafilter.com - 46%
* metatalk.metafilter.com - 4%
* projects.metafilter.com - 1%

This is an interesting graph: what happened in November 05 which doubled the daily pageviews for a week or two?

Also: congrats etc.

This seems like as good a place as any to add my congratulations and mention that you've created the best discussion site on the Internet. Nobody does moderated message boards better. In fact, there's no other site I think is run so well that I'd want to congratulate the #1 for doing a good job and not being a self-obsessed jerk.

I second the not-a-jerk-comment.

I have lurked and observed for years and this accessible, open, working conversation is certainly one of the most amazing, living and breathing creatures of our times.

Thousands congrats.

The Mushroom Thread is what occurred in November 2005.

It might take a while to load, or possibly crash your browser. Bring coffee.

HA! My first comment was in 21304. That means I've been around for nearly 60% of the site's content. Face it... without me, most of MetaFilter just wouldn't have been the same.
posted by COBRA! at 7:01 AM on March 14, 2006

So what you're saying is that MetaFilter is largely responsible for the decline of industry and productivity in the west?

Seriously though, thanks for everything Matt!

Sweet baby Mohammed, I'd forgotten about The Mushroom Thread. Explains everything.

Swedish Jebus, 1032 comments in the mushroom thread!

That thread grew like...well...hmm...

511 comments per day or about 1 comment every three minutes for the last 6.75 years.

And that jumps significantly if you factor out the 16,087 hours jrun has been down.
