mefi cd swap - worth the wait May 9, 2006 6:36 PM   Subscribe

How about a round of applause for skygazer, missing member of mefi swapset grey from 11/05 who not only finally sent along the CDs, but included a short handwritten note, a tiny toy gun, an even smaller piece of black licorice, a guitar string, and a particularly meaningful (to me at least) blank postcard of early concept designs of the space shuttle.

All of this arrived in the mail in the midst of particularly bad week, so to receive a bit of human sharedness and new music to discover from a total stranger was great. My faith in mefi and humanity is restored. Thank you.

Yeah I got one too. My wife (Hopkins, South Carolina born and raised) got home before me and opened the package, and when I got home and went through the stuff in the envelope I held up the licorice and said "Oooh look!", and she said, "You should throw that away", and I said "Why?" and she said "I think its drugs" and I said "Drugs?" and she said, "Yeah like ecstasy or LSD or something" and I said "Why on earth would you think that a complete stranger would send me drugs?" and she just held up the envelope bearing the return address with the words "Brooklyn, NY" on it. I walked silently over to the trash can and dropped what I am sure was a delicious piece of licorice right in the trash.

I burned the CD's onto my MP3 player last night and listened to the mix today at work, and I enjoyed it, but think that it will need another listen or two before it sinks in properly. Anyway, thanks for the music buddy, but next time, hold the drugs.

I didn't get the gun or the guitar string (or the drug!) but I did get a key, a fake gold coin, a half-circle of used blaster caps (maybe for Brandon's gun?), and a tasty bit of non-drugged licorice. Also, two CDs and a small hand-written note. It was a very pleasant surprise, and some clever packaging, like a Dave McKean Sandman cover but without the morbid tendencies. Very nice, and much appreciated.

My People of the honorable tribe of Swapset Gray,

I am very happy you're all pleased about the CD's and the various tchotkes. Thank you Brandon for the swell metatalk round of applause. I'm glad it brought some happiness during a not-so-great week. It was what I hoped would be the desired effect and warms the cockles of my druggy licorice candy addled heart.

Now...as for this whole kooky "It's from Brooklyn, NY so it must be drugs" thing. What kind of a moron, from fair Brooklyn or any other Burg, would have an actual return address on such a package anyhow. Yeesh. (Perhaps next time. Wink.) Anyhow if you'll excuse me now, I have to go pick up a couple two or three eightballs to tied me over for the evening...catch ya round the blue.

Feel free to drop a line and let me know what you think of the mixes good or bad...

I'm assuming there's a good reason that swaps aren't just generated once you have five interested registered parties?

2. Proposes that the Order disband on June 7th, 2006, at midnight UTC, and cease all its activities forthwith;

3. Requests the opinion of its Members on whether, if matter 2. is accepted, the Order should re-establish in a different location, and where that location should be;

4. Requests the opinion of its Members on whether the anniversary should also be marked with a commemorative post to Metatalk, and what the nature and content of such a post should be;

5. Encourages all Members to vote on matters 1. and 2. by expressing their acceptance as "AYE" or their refusal as "NAY" in the voting box provided below;

2. I think I missed the rationalization for ending at the anniversary. I know I was a late comer, but I have to say that I realyl enjoy the sense of a secret thread running beneath the pages of the site. I like it as someplace to come for a change, I like the people who drop in, and, even if I'm not posting there, I like the idea of that kind of counter-history. So many alternatives:
Should we return grapefruitmoon's longboat and travel by alternate technology, e.g. trebuchet, Star Trek-type transporter, other?
Give us some 'for instances' please, Nice Donkey, of a new starting point and/or numbering scheme.
Given that MeTa threads close in 30 days, where else could we go?
In other words, if we disband on June 7th as gnfti suggests in #2, then re-establish in another location, what are some possibe locations in which we would be tolerated?

Would it be easier to observe the anniversary with fitting tributes in a nice clean, previously unused MeaTalk post, then quietly continue as we are until someone comes up with a better idea?

Nothing much happening today?

It was on this day in 1989 that the Chinese government cracked down on students conducting pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

It was on this day in 1940 that British forces began the evacuation from Dunkirk. World War II had been going on for about eight months. British forces had gone to Belgium to help defend Belgium and France against the invading Nazi army, but they were poorly prepared for battle and completely overwhelmed.

... the British government sent out a request for all persons with sea-worthy vessels to help in the evacuation. Men in fishing boats, trawlers, lifeboats, paddle steamers, and yachts crossed the channel to help the soldiers escape. More than 300,000 soldiers were saved in the evacuation of Dunkirk. When they arrived in Britain, they were given a hero's welcome.
(For a dramatization, see the old B&W movie Mrs. Miniver)

It was on this day in 1942 that the Battle of Midway took place over the Pacific Ocean. It was one of the first battles fought almost entirely in the air, and it's considered one of the major turning points of the Pacific half of World War II.

It was one this day in 1919 that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote, was passed by the United States Congress.
