What: The LionHearted Players, a comedy/variety hour night thing. I'm in a few sketches. It'll be fun, it'll be funny, and best of all, it'll be short.
When: Monday May 15th, 6:30 p.m. for drinks, show starts at 7 p.m.
Where: Don't Tell Mama, 343 West 46th Street
Details: Cover is $12, BUT if you make a reservation by May 13th by calling 212-757-0788, cover is only $10- what a deal (plus, it makes me and the troupe look good if our reservation list is long, so PLEASE make a reservation)! There's also a two drink minimum, but most of you crazies don't need the encouragement to drink.

I imagine we will eat/drink/be merry afterwards. I know I will, anyway.

I wish you a) luck, and b) would stop using MetaTalk to drum up support for your personal project. It's not really a MetaFilter gathering just because you're going to be there.

Actually, I know several other Mefites who are coming, so feel free to suck it, MarkAnd.

Seriously? Can you imagine if every MeFier that was in a troupe/band/art collective and had made some friends through the site that were going to their show made not one but two promotional posts to MeTa under the guise of "Meetup"?

Most anyone that's ever attended a meetup could make the same claims, and MeTa would be a mess. How is this not shameless self-promotion?

What MarkAnd said.

Well, I'd actually like to see the word 'tacky' in there somewhere as well but, basically, what MarkAnd said.

I think that'd be great. I love hearing about other things Mefites are involved in- plenty of other people have turned their personal projects into meetups. So much cultural stuff to do in NYC, so little time, so it's nice to know what other Mefites are gonna be at, so we can all meet up together, because there are no cooler people in the world than Mefites.

Hmm, I think y'all are just bitter you're not in NYC.

I thought self-links were ban time. If not, I'm posting my furry fiction.

That must be it! It wasn't that you are promoting yourself, it's that you're promoting yourself in NYC. We appreciate your insight and your selflessness that allowed us to schedule our evenings around you, you, and you.

Yeah, that's it. Make sure next time it's chicago. I'd have no problem with that.

What it comes down to:

1. Many mefites would like to know what other mefites are up to
2. Metatalk expectations are such that running with 1. in the style of this post would be a Bad Thing.

Creating some sort of separate channel for these things seems like the only way to handle increased announcements (which I would be For) without dumping all of them onto the Metatalk front page (which I am Very Much Against).

I can't recall with certainty whether Matt said he was working on something like this, but I think he was. And if he wasn't, and wasn't wanting to, setting up some sort of off-site announcement list (or even a simple site with an RSS feed or such) would do the trick.

I wasn't all that comfortable posting to Meta every four days or so when the compilation album got started; I set up the external site in part specifically to lessen the sort of creeping sense of faux pas that came with each successive "and here's another thing" post.

So, yeah, ThePinkSuperhero, there's nothing inherently bad about wanting to let us know what's going on, but it chafes against the Metatalk feel. I think the de facto guidelines have allowed for the occasional Calls For Meetups ("Hey, Cranstonites, it's been a few months!") and for Really Unusual Things ("hey I'm going to be on Jeopardy!"), and that anything more regular or low-impact or self-promotional has been not as kosher.

Hmm, I think y'all are just bitter you're not in NYC.

PDX points at NYC and laughs and then goes home to reasonably-priced apartments. NYC, in typical fashion, does not notice.

Here is a list of places I would rather be in than New York City:

Tikrit
Utica
the goatse guy's anus
Boston's Deer Island sewage treatment plant
the bottom of a huge pile of homeless people's unwashed socks
a Republican orgy
Dresden in 1945
the slums of Calcutta
a Larry the Cable Guy performance

I'm actually thinking about buying a theatre, kidnapping dios, rendering him to a secure location somewhere in Eastern Europe, and waterboarding him until he agrees to pretend be Shirley Temple in his own 5-hour, one-woman tap-dance extravaganza.

This is for two reasons: firstly, watching that would, in my humble opinion, be far preferable to watching the show that's being pimped here. Secondly, the hammering he'd get for advertising it here not once, but twice, would be probably go down in history as the greatest MeTa thread ever.

In summary, just because ThePinkSuperHero has got the smarts to figure out that her $5 MeFi membership is cheaper than a GoogleAd, doesn't mean that she shouldn't be banned. If this isn't a bannable offence, then self-linkers shouldn't be banned.

I would hate to see every mefite with a theater/music group post to mefi this way (projects works so much better for it) so I'll close this so people that want to go can still get the reminder and we can head off the does-NYC-suck-or-not stuff.
