Random chatfilter of the day

Blech. I just flagged that. I was considering posting here. I mean, really. I am speech-impaired with incredulity.

I love how all the nonsense questions get two posts: one on Ask, and then a callout on Talk.

Just flag it and move on.

The thing is, it is so bad, and so clearly out of the current norms that it makes me think zardoz is actively trying to push the envelope.
posted by mzurer at 5:06 PM on May 25, 2006

It's a dumb post, badly structured. But without the 'how many can you count in/poll of the day' stuff, it gets down to 'I want a list of numbers in different languages, can you help?', so I threw him Zompist's list. Hopefully that'll help.
posted by jacquilynne at 5:09 PM on May 25, 2006

Yes, and that's what Google or Babelfish are for. Numbers are hardly difficult to find in translation.

Random chatfilter of the day

i think there was a much more obvious candidate for that award today.

Normally I would have flagged and moved on. But this... this is beyond chatfilter: stupid pollfilter.

Everyone who feels inclined, list their favorite chat filter clues. I'll start:

1.) Vague recruitment of everyone to chime in if they feel like, but no pressure, followed by offer to get the ball rolling with an answer to their own AskMe.

Wow. Can anyone top this one? I'll go first:

Hey AskMe, I was looking at my bellybutton fluff today, and it resembled Our Lord Jesus Christ, which deities have you seen in your navel?

Yeah.....sometimes there seem to be two camps about these posts with both sides fighting over whether or not it warranted deletion.

Thankfully, the time of unification seems to have come. Let us put our past differences aside and unite as a people against this common cause.

Wow, holy crap is that a bad use of askme.

Normally I would have flagged and moved on.

Why didn't you? "It was really, really bad" isn't much of a reason. We've had about eleventy-eight ChatFilter discussions in MeTa over the past ten days. What, exactly, is this thread supposed to accomplish that wouldn't have been achieved with a flag?
posted by cribcage at 5:26 PM on May 25, 2006

Yeah.....sometimes there seem to be two camps about these posts with both sides fighting over whether or not it warranted deletion.

I'll go first.

Oh, come on, if it was simply rephrased as 'Given that basic numeracy is essential to international travel, what are the numbers one to ten in the languages I am likely to encounter on my forthcoming trip around the world?' none of you would be calling for its deletion.
posted by jack_mo at 5:28 PM on May 25, 2006

Oh, and I'm with cribcage on this. With the exception of this thread allowing me to see the horror that is that use of askme, I don't really think that a meta thread is much needed.

It seems to so blatantly call for a deletion that a flag would probably get the job done pretty well. We seem to have enough chatfilter threads clogging up meta lately.

It's illuminating to see all the doofi who actually posted in the thread.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 5:29 PM on May 25, 2006

jack_mo: no I probably wouldn't be calling for it's deletion then because it wouldn't have stood out as such a crappy use of askme. Currently though? ugh. I suppose it could be partially redeemed by being rephrased, but even then seems to be a little weak.

Besides, that's NOT what done. Your way does seem a hell of a lot less chatty I have to admit, but the current question seems to raise almost every chatfilter flag.

Seems I was wrong about the time of glorious unity. I shall go back and await the coming of our metafilter saviour.

Spanish! And Basque!

Oh, shit. . . Wrong thread. What I meant to say was I laughed my ass off at how shamelessly chatty this was. At least take two seconds to construct a defensible question!
posted by veggieboy at 5:35 PM on May 25, 2006

Had it been rephrased, the difference would be legion: Instead of flagging I would have found a photo of Samuel L. Jackson and put "Google, Motherfucker! DO YOU SPEAK GOOGLE?!?" in a word bubble, and then posted that instead of the above.
posted by mzurer at 5:43 PM on May 25, 2006

Stunt - I was just pulling your leg. (There have been a lot of people quibbling over possible question-phrasing in recent threads on this topic.)

*is a doofi*

*was just very bored*

It's funny how chatfilter is always popular.

I suppose we are being denied it for our own good.
posted by fire&wings at 5:58 PM on May 25, 2006

What are your favorite languages to count to ten. Here are mine.

That would have worked.
posted by justgary at 5:58 PM on May 25, 2006

Well, this is obviously chatfilter, and framed that way too, but on the other hand there is a 'legitimate' question in there as well.

It's like a chatfilter/problem-to-solve rolled into one. I guess we'll see if it gets deleted.
posted by delmoi at 6:10 PM on May 25, 2006

Careful, justgary. Someone might think you meant that seriously.
posted by jack_mo at 6:21 PM on May 25, 2006

Where is there a legitimate question?

If it's "I want to learn to count to ten in different languagues," then that's like "I want to learn Spanish. Start typing in Spanish below." It's silly.

(Has anyone linked this thread in that one?)

Look: chatfilter is spreading to MetaFilter!

this is getting nuts this week. I removed it.

"AskMe is for random polls about beer, not about languages."
posted by Wolfdog at 6:58 PM on May 25, 2006

I like to think of ChatFilter as the necessary evil that sustains the glory and wonder that is MetaTalk.

Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire MetaTalk.

seems like this one is solved.
