Could we have per-user rss comment feeds? June 16, 2006 2:39 PM   Subscribe

Could we have per-user rss comment feeds? To assuage the fears of the paranoid, maybe they could be user switchable and off by default.

I concur. It would be mighty useful for feeding into Suprglu.

I think this is in the queue.

I think this will just encourage people to hold grudges and harass other users. I vote no on this.

Of course, I can't read, but I'm guessing maybe those random letters after the comma suggests that people could turn them off to prevent particular users from subscribing to their feed? Would a permission system work?

(damn you illiteracy. you have plagued me my whole life!)

I think this will just enable people to keep track of their favorite posters and commenters. I vote yes on this.

Whatcha got to hide, dios? People could just as easily stalk you through your profile page and wait for updates to the post count. But really, you flatter yourself.

I wasn't referring to myself. I was speaking generally about the propensity of Metafilter users to want to be repetitively antagonistic to particular users (ironically, just as you are being towards me, as you have been before). While there is clearly some usefulness to this, it would also increase the ability for people to troll other users unless there was some permission system. There is no need to take my comments here and try to insult and pick a fight with me, loquacious. Stick to being the guy who tries too hard to be edgy and funny and leave the 'being a prick to dios' to the typical offenders.

If people want to keep track of what comments users are making, in real time, they can already do it. All we want is for it to be available as RSS. No great security issue involved, really.

Some of us would welcome a little harassment, dios. The rest of you could just, you know, not turn it on.

As a pessimist, I see your point, dios, but for once the pessimist is losing—I'd love this, I think, and Matt could always, as he has suggested lately, ban the fuckers.

Besides, no self-respecting grudgy curmudgeon would be stymied by the lack of this feature.

Yeah, I don't think the turn it on/off makes much sense, since everything is public and linked off your user page. I'll add this soon when I do the per-thread feeds.

I think this is in the queue.

Can we get a list of things Matt is working on, and proposals he's rejected? One that's updated regularly?

it seems like we'd lose a lot of context with just the user comments. For instance, how much of timeistight's comment above would make sense in an rss feed?

With due dates! Action items! Bulleted lists! and project managers we can haul into the office when a feature slips its launch date!

What would the title be.. Just the thread title with "(comment by timeistight)" added to the end?

Matt, I think we need you to come in this weekend. And don't forget to turn in your TPS report.

Sorry, you're right. That was over the line. It just irked me that your first assumption and worry was that it would be abused.

Nah, just a probability estimate..

Per user RSS implementation:
  • within 1 year -- 20%
  • within 2 years -- 20%
  • 3 years or more -- 10%
  • flipflop -- 50%
It could be a wiki!

Can I get an RSS feed of things Matt is working on?

Did you run it by legal yet? Is this intranet only? What does marketing have to say about it? Is it conflicting with their branding efforts?

Obviously the only actionable thing to do is to develop an itemized roadmap for all of the ongoing projects and push an RSS feed for that so we can all stay in the loop. Top of the project list should be a feed for the project list feed.

I'd be content to know if a feature is already in the works before I make an ass of myself by suggesting it in a MeTa post. Nothing fancy, but I was serious.

You forgot the Product Manager. Business Analysts can't understand things like "projects."

I don't know what Eidetaker had in mind, Matt, but I've thought once or twice it would be interesting and informative to see which frequently-requested features are on the "someday" list and which are "never" and why. Often the reasons are interesting and demonstrate some key principles of how this place is set up / managed.
