Why do people kick the other kid's toys in the Sandbox (Ask Metafilter)? June 20, 2006 1:00 PM   Subscribe

I would like to commend the regulars of AskMetaFilter for letting their style of asking questions happen. It inspired the way I write AskMe questions now (and now I don't care if any people answer). Which brings me to my next and final point; about ettiquete and policy. Why can't people relax and just realize that's it's a sandbox, and if you kick the other kid's toy or throw sand in their face, I'm going to shove you? The conflict is necessary to watch the community form, but I think it's time to move to the monkey bars, you know what I mean kids?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. People should get argumentative with each other in AskMe threads?

MetaTalk is the monkey bars. Pissing matches and derails in AskMe can get in the way of people getting their questions answered and sometimes take over entire threads. So, people can come here and get their sand and poo flinging jones out. Seems to mostly work, even without any intervention on my part. However I will say that I disagree with your assertion that shoving back is always the proper way to deal with toy kicking. It's often the shoving back that turns one irritating troll or asshole into some sort of big conflagration where people pick sides.

I'm not really clear on what tweak means either, but I'm guessing, from "Realize that...if you kick...I'm going to shove... it's time to move to the monkey bars" that it means "If you act like an ass, people will be an ass back to you, so let's stop acting like asses in the first place?"

this post is asinine. that is, unless you love nonsensical playground metaphors.

if you're one of those, then this post is awesome.

This post is lame, and it's most likely an extension to tweak's feelings expressed here. Newsflash tweak; just because you don't think people are listening to you does not warrant a new MeTa post, just to get additional attention.

I was afraid of that too, since the linked comment was quite annoying enough.

So if I kick another kid's toy or throw sand in their face, tweaks' going to shove me? So MetaFilter's got an enforcer named tweak now?
Really, I think we could come up with someone with a better name than that.
EEK! It's tweak!!
I dunno. I don't think this will work out too well.

This is a very fucking stupid MeTa post. Worse, it's painful to read.

In your last question you cut off a sentance with the more inside. Whoever you got that from, I suggest you stop. Also, post makes no sense.

No I don't. Why would I? You have to be more spesific.

I don't get it. The answers in his last post seemed pretty civil and he hasn't answered anything since late may.

Tweak, did you forget to take your medicine today?

Well, if my childhood playground experience is any indication, I guess it means it's time for all of us to illustrate our weak upper body strength.

Speak for yourself. I was amazing at the monkey bars. I still feel I could climb better than most monkeys but this was a claim that was impossible to prove since the fascists at the zoo forbid climbing contests with the monkeys. There's nothing special about monkeys, nothing at all.

There are certainly cases in which that would apply, but I think in this instance, I'm rubber, you're glue. Bounces off me, sticks to you.

And what was that crap with making us have our palms in for the arm-hang? Seriously, I could have gone for like three times as long if I could have done it palms-out.

people who play in sandboxes and monkeybars can be horribly cruel sometimes but without this sort of cruelty mankind would have never evolved to the point of being able to make sandboxes and monkeybars. also turtle-shaped sandboxes.

And if I'm being cruel, just consider it my Evolutionary Progressivist Imperative.
