Do we have a list of sock puppets? June 28, 2006 10:39 PM   Subscribe

I keep seeing sock puppets mentioned (for example, here) in various MeTa conversations, and I was wondering, since I don't want to go tunneling through all those mounds of... conversation; is there a canonical list of known sock-puppetry? For example, on the Wiki, or in a wing of MetaChat? I'm not talking about outing those who are still behaving or anything, but rather addressing the question in an "after the fact" sort of way.

crunchland's profile keeps track of them.

It's hardly comprehensive, though. I don't follow these things as closely as many do but I notice several conspicuous omissions.

As long as the subject's come up, are there, for lack of a better word, "guidelines" about allowing banned users to return with new accounts? Obviously you and Jessamyn know when these users return; and despite how pissed you sound when issuing bans, you seem pretty nonchalant about playing whack-a-mole with some of these twerps.

Sock puppets are truly tragic:

I think all sock puppets should be forced to self-identify. You know, like how terrorists need to wear t-shirts that say "I HATE DEMOCRACY" on the front.

I thought so too at one point, but this is actually not true. Den Beste has proved this by making a post on his weblog stating that SCDB is indeed him.

I tried to stick with documented proof of sockpuppets, and ignore speculation. If you know of messages that show who is whose sockpuppet, by all means, point me to them and I'll be glad to update the list.

According to the Wikipedia page on it, the term 'sock puppet' has a birthday coming up on July 9th. I was pondering a post about a recent sock puppet outing that some friends in potter fandom brought to my attention, but am having trouble framing it as a 'this post is about sock puppets' post not 'Harry Potter fans are insane' post.

Seriously. I considered posting about a FPP about the whole thing, but I worried that unless they followed the Harry Potter fandom it ultimately might be too confusing for the meta reader. (Also it's very long, but with an insane trainwreckish quality to it) so I ultimately decided against it.
