Where can I discuss this topic that was deleted? July 16, 2006 9:25 AM   Subscribe

Okey fine. Then where? Is there some place on the web where DrawBall is being discussed?

Uh. What? Are you suggesting that Mefi should be acting as defacto discussion board for any site lacking its own forum?

I think you've finally identified the one thing this "internet" business is lacking.

This sounds like a brilliant idea.

More importantly, who the hell drew that raggedy-ass goldfish over my HI-larious 'DOUBLE 50143'???

Less importantly, but more relevant, there are people using the Gabbly.com chat thing to discuss Drawball.

Talk about on your blog. I don't know what you're expecting out of this.

I don't get it, Zach. I don't get why you made this post, and I don't get why you misspelled Okay, which is not a difficult word to spell.

I think the point being made is:

Okay, it's a duplicate, but the other thread is now closed. So is there some kind of permanent edict that MetaFilter is over and done with this topic forever?

However I think the answer is "yes," unless some fresh "news hook" can be found to justify reposting.
posted by scarabic at 1:24 PM on July 16, 2006

Scarabic worded it nicely, but I wasn't trying to be so sophisticated. As for the answer being yes? Huh. Examine the past and future of this simple mimickry of a flag, and tell me there's not an infinite probability drive's worth of material to discuss here.

Cortex: "Are you suggesting.."

I wasn't suggesting anything. I was asking.

Gator: "The fuck? ZachsMind is a three-digiter."

Damn right! I AM a 3 digiter. Know what I've learned being a 3 digiter? Every time I post on a front page, people question the validity of it. They've done it for six years. No reason for it to stop now.

I've learned that when I do a front page post, which is VERY rare nowadays because it's more fun to make snarky comments than it is to receive them, I'll get a bunch of snarky comments, and if I'm very lucky, I'll get one answer that might be helpful.

Thank you Alvy. =) Thank you thank you thank you. Thou art a a pearl before swine. I am not worthy to breathe your air. I bow to your pristine gabblyness.

Move along. Nothing more to see here. Unless you have a BETTER answer. Move along. =)

The reason that "continuing need to discuss" as a reason for posting is insufficient is because...wait for it...MetaFilter's raison d'etre is not to be a discussion board. It's a place to present interesting websites, with discussion. Presentation of a website only need happen once.

Oh, Alvy's not that great.

Pristine gabblyness? Is that some sort of insult?

Ethereal Bligh said: "Presentation of a website only need happen once."

Unless said website changes, and said change is notable. The website in question is constantly changing at erratic intervals, and therefore I argue that it's always worthy of an FPP in the Blue. Certainly, once a month couldn't possibly hurt a flea. However, I'm not interested in MeFi being the place to discuss drawball any more than I think MeFi should be the place to discuss youtube, even though one in every twenty videos posted to that website seems to get discussed here. Now here, the fact that youtube does have a message board system built into itself, and yet MeFites deem antics there worthy of discussion here, while simultaneously drawball cannot be allowed more than one thread in the Blue for itself in a lifetime, this preposterous absurdity would not be illuminated by the likes of me.

Far be it for me to suggest anything in this esteemed bastion of noble thought. MetaFilter has stood since the turn of the millenium, a sound and steadfast repository of wisdom and insight into the modern spirit of mankind. The Blue is most certainly a tribute to keen cavalier thought, and noble breeding. Indeed, MetaFilter is a daily image, made by language, reflecting reality; every graceful line, and every quarrelsome blemish is revealed in sharp relief. MeFi is the eye into the soul of humanity. I type before you far too humble to think for a moment that I could be so bold as to suggest anything to such a stalwart and quick-tempered establishment.

I only asked, if not here, then where on the web are drawball enthusiasts gathering, and gabbly is not apparently the place. I gave it a try and discovered no one at drawball discussing it, but a dozen or so people were at the gabbly.com website complaining that they were all bored, and when I suggested they check out drawball, I met a couple kind and helpful people, and the rest either ignored me or said to clear off.

So I'm still open to suggestions. If not here, then where? I wasn't trying to make a federal case about it. I merely asked a question. I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition!

An reasonable argument made on an unreasonable example. If drawball, of all things, justifies reposting when it "changes", we should post it daily—it's content is dynamic by design. That people drew something new is no more interesting and postworthy an event than that The Onion published another weekly edition.

No, it's a silly argument whose silliness is made particularly clear by this example. By that argument, every non-static website should be reposted at least once a day: the New York Times, Arts & Letters Daily, everybody's blog. It's perfectly OK to be curious about where people can discuss DrawBall; there's no need to make silly arguments to try to support the unsupportable idea that it should continue to be discussed here.

Wikipedia's got people fed up with Drawball too.

I said it before I'll say it again. I wasn't ARGUING FOR ANYTHING. A long time ago I used to argue for or against various MeFi-ish pet causes. I stopped messing with that years ago. It's Matt's pool. He lets you guys pee in it. I'm fresh outta chlorine.

I asked a question, to which I still haven't found a suitable answer. Seems no one wants to house a place where Drawball gets talked about. I've done some searches and any attempts to organize interested groups, at best deteriorated into a flash in the pan thing, and at worst devolved into disturbing turf wars over the protection and desecration of symbols and icons. And you think I'm an idiot? I didn't participate in the fight between the south Korean flag and a Pepsi trademark. Sheesh. No wonder we're in World War Three. Human beings are stupid.

Well, since my Gabbly link wasn't good enough for you - which totally undermines my awesomeness, tyvfm - I'll offer you this:

Very few of the people who are using Drawball give a shit about the entire ball. Most of the groups are members of existing communities who only care about their slice of the pie, and are uninterested in protecting anything other than their own creations. The ball's creators could have easily created an official forum, but why waste the bandwidth when those forums already exist off-site, and few of the users care or identify themselves as 'members' of Drawball?

Verily, Drawball is a perfect metaphor/example for human society. Because yes, Virginia, human beings are stupid.

And you think I'm an idiot?

I don't think you're an idiot, and I may have gotten the ball rolling. I apologize if I read too much into it. Here's why I did—if you weren't making some sort of policy commentary, posting this to Metatalk instead of AskMe? It's a totally legit query.

So dropping it, tersely, on Metatalk? It felt like not so much a query as an argument. You could have phrased it a lot better and tossed in on the green and you'd have gotten answers such as they are without the flack.

Also, it's Monday, everybody's grumpy, and you left your thread unattended for eight hours.

I'd recommend talking to the site owner, try and get a forum set up THERE, seems like a likely place to host a fan club for a page, rather than posting on the blue monthly/daily/hourly
