Can't reach MeFi in the mornings September 5, 2006 6:14 AM   Subscribe

Disappearing mefi - from just after 9am UK time until 12.30 ish I couldn't get onto mefi at all - only the status blog was working. It's not the first time I've had trouble getting on in the mornings here - is it mefi or do I have some sort of crazy network issue?

It's MeFi - I have the same problem. On the plus side it's made my mornings at work much more productive.

It's normal for mefi. I think if matt could fix it, he would - lord knows, he's tried.

It was crashing every night US time for a while, a while back, then it stopped, now it's started again.

Small furry gremlins that creep into the hardware looking for a warm spot to nap. Stavros has it, it was down again this morning a while. I hate going to work without my fix, but some days you have to rough it.

It has been bad lately

(the big grey gap this morning is my server falling over, so I can't complaint)

Presumably there is some reason why the server cannot be automatically monitored by another process and rebooted if found to be unresponsive, but I can't think of what it would be. Anyone?

Happens to me every morning, EST. Can't get on MeFi (any part of the site) from about 7:00am onwards. Is usually working by the time I arrive at the office around 9:00.

I'm pretty sure it's the new queries on the jobs site not being optimized yet, and I'll work on that this week.

The server is oddly organic that way -- when Music first launched the server was unstable for about a week or two and then it was fine.

Oddly enough, this morning, while I couldn't get into the blue proper, I could open individual threads as linked from the Mecha sidebar with no problem. I didn't try to post though, so I have no idea if that would have worked or not.

I did. It was the first time I've tried to get on all day, too.

Yeah, it's been unstable today. I just fixed a bunch of stuff and updated one of the servers to all the latest patches so hopefully things start mellowing out soon.

I know it's rough when MetaFilter is down for two hours, but repeatedly kicking your server is perhaps not the best way to relieve the stress.

I bet the server took time off to wish jessamyn happy birthday.

And then it got drunk at the party and didn't come back

This problem never really went away. It got much better, but there has, for a couple of years at least, been a tendency for MeFi to be hard to reach in the mornings (Eastern Australia time).
