Is there a way to block comments from a specific user?

No offense to delmoi, but it seems like he comments in every single thread I take the time to read. After awhile I get fatigued, and just want to read other people's comments.

Close your eyes and scroll quickly. It's, yes, a challenging process, but the licensing restrictions are a little looser than the standard Microsoft EULA.

You get fatigued from reading comments?

My kingdom for an img src tag...

MondoMeta

Filter for username in footer, action = remove

Filter for username in content, action = highlight.

You won't see their comments, and you can easily see who's wrapped up in their antics. Cake.

Y'know, it'd probably be a little classier if you didn't indentify whose comments you wanted to block.

However, it definitely wouldn't have been as hilarious.

Ironically, delmoi has not commented in this thread, which I assume you took the time to read.

Hint to delmoi: Leave it ironic.

Or, as delmoi would say, "helarious."

Give the guy a break. His family was taken hostage and won't be released unless he reaches 10,000 comments by November. He wants to hunt down the kidnappers, but instead he has been forced to sit at a computer for months grinding out 20+ comments a day. It's no surprise that grammar and spelling suffer in a stressful situation. So please, folks, show some sympathy. Only half a day remains. The clock is ticking.

I would like a pony to filter out my own comments, please. It seems like I comment in every single thread I take the time to read. After a while I get fatigued, and just want to read other people's comments. On second thought, I don't really want to read other people's comments, either. Is there some kind of script that would make MetaFilter invisible? No offense. I just don't like you in those pants.

Q. Is there a way to make a totally lame callout without pretending it's some sort of feature request that has already been done to death about a million times before?

A. Sure, just post it as an ironic question in-thread and then answer the question yourself.

Maybe we can get some greasemonkey script that would condense delmoi's short, consecutive comments into one larger, more substantive comment. Just kidding, much love, peace out!

Search Metatalk for 'killfile'. Many rich, nuanced and spittle-laced shouting matches about this idea have occurred in the past.

Of course now, these days it's all 'Look at me I'm teh funney' 'Look at me too I'm teh funneyist' .... *thread closed*

Me, I preferred the shouting. [/grumpy old bastard]

Stupid present. Why must it differ so from the past?

And stupid Deej. If I had a killfile I would include The Deej a thousand times. Screw it, I'm going to white his name out on my monitor with Liquid Paper. Ach, stupid scroll wheel! Damn you, Deej.

OK, I tried that, and it crashed my IE so hard it just closed without so much as an error message. Dammit, I hate these stinking MeFi bugs. WTF, Matt?
posted by diddlegnome at 10:12 PM on October 31, 2006

It'd be easy in greasemonkey. I've got a script that instantly kills any comment including the word "mac". It's not running now but for a while there it was the only way to make any thread mentioning computers readable. It would only be a small change to get it to only grep the poster's name.

Lordy, I hope this is geek humour.

On second thought, it's probably funnier if it isn't.

I remember when CS:Source first launched. Flood of newbies coming to the game for the first time, none of them familiar with the controls. Chat was constantly running with questions about what key was bound to what: "how do I plant the bomb?"—"what teh key 4 grenade"—"how buy armor lol" and so on.

Every once in a while, someone would respond, "F10". And then two or three players would just drop out of the game.

F10 was the default binding for "quit".

The real glory was when someone came back, said "CS crashed wtf"...and then they'd try it a couple more times.
posted by cortex at 5:35 AM on November 1, 2006

cortex, people still respond with F10. 'cept it's just lame now.

markr wrote "I've got a script that instantly kills any comment including the word 'mac'."

Is that posted anywhere I can install from? I can see the usefulness. (Of course you know it would kill your own comment in this case. Suicidal greasemonkey scripts?)
posted by caution live frogs at 10:58 AM on November 1, 2006

I can see the usefulness [of a script like markr's]

This sort of script is already out there, if you search userscripts.org on tag Metafilter. Not that I'm against new and better developments in scripts, but there's a reinventing the wheel aspect to scripts that might be avoided, or at least used as an existing install base towards the goal of building the ultimate script for the benefit of more users.

My reader indulgence rating is close to exhausted on this subject, but I cannot resist a final remark on scripts. MetaFilter-based Firefox extension and Greasemonkey script use and development is woefully inefficient. It could be so much nicer for everyone without too much effort (i.e. external effort not involving the admins). Several times a month I see a request that a script or extension could quickly resolve. One simple suggestion is that a young or hungry coder make a rep for him or herself by offering to code the things up, with the possibility of the tasks leading to actual $$$ down the line through established contacts or coding extensions. But instead, for example, we see an ongoing posting soap opera on a highly popular MetaFilter-based extension having further development withheld due to the tenuous connection of the author being mistreated, and the author seemingly oblivious to the fact that by doing this he punishes himself far more than anyone else. Oh well, not my business, not my life.

On the other hand, fundamentally Greasemonkey is just an elaborate browser hack which may not deserve the attention. MetaFilter may evolve past the need for it or other extensions by an eventual basic restructuring of the MetaFilter interface.
